Another sexy romance in the Regency Sinner series. This is Maxim’s story and it turns into more than I thought it would be. Turns out Maxim is a tortured hero and so had more of a painful past than I was expecting. At first he seemed aloof and hard to know but slowly we learn more about him and that he has more depth of character. I enjoyed this steamy romance, wish it was a bit longer though.

FINAL DECISION: I didn't think much of the story as it started, but the relationship between the hero and heroine as the story progressed made me enjoy the story quite a bit. This is a simple easy story and certainly not a complex drama, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

THE STORY: Maximillian Smythe, Earl of Carlton is taking his turn searching for the traitor that the eight Sinners are searching for. The woman he is to investigate is his own stepmother Heather. The young and beautiful second wife to his father. Six years ago Maxim and Heather had a whirlwind romance before Maxim left to spy for the Crown and returned to find Heather married to his father. Now Maxim must determine what Heather is hiding.

OPINION: The story line here is not surprising and almost everything is quickly disclosed to the reader (if not to the characters). A second chance at love for these two characters complicated by deceptions and lies and misunderstandings.

The story and the characters are not particularly deep, but sometimes an uncomplicated story makes a nice easy read. The characters were not stupid despite their misunderstandings and I liked that they quickly were able to unravel the secrets between them.

I liked Maxim as a character and thought that his darkness was actually what made the story interesting. This book reminds me of the category romances in the past (although more erotic and explicit) because of the simplicity of the story.

WORTH MENTIONING: This is a novella.

CONNECTED BOOKS: WICKED DECEPTION is the fourth book in the Regency Sinners series. This is a series of books with the overarching storyline of the search for a woman traitor. While there is some connection between the books, this book can certainly be read as a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Another brilliant episode in the search for the lady committing treason against Crown and country.
This was a fast moving, page turner and I loved every moment of it.
The cutest little boy, a mother who has a secret, a lover who has returned from the wars who also hides his secret - it really shows that communication is a great solver of problems.
The story is well balanced and kept me in its clutches to the very end and I am quite happy to recommend it as a really good read.

The fabulous Carole has done it again, this book was a absolute joy to read, from start to finish.

With Carole's books if you are not a fan of explicit language and sexual content, then these books are not for you.

As we have found with the previous books, the sinners haven't found the lady spy, but they have found love.

So now its down Maximillian Smythe, the Earl of Carlton, to find the lady spy. But there is one problem with the name he has picked.

The lady in question is Lady Heather Smythe, Dowager Countess of Carlton, who is his step-mother and mother to his half brother Ralph.

Maxim is a troubled man, who carries a lot of secrets and because of these secrets he lost the woman he loved six years ago. But at the time Maxim didn't know he was in love. That is until he sees Heather again and eventually she breaks through his barriers.

Heather was nineteen and she had just found out she was pregnant. So to keep the gossips at bay and to give the baby a name, Heather married Maxim's father. Please don't think bad of Heather she was very young and Maxim was fighting in the war and to give his some credit he try to look for Maxim, before he married Heather.

Now from here I can't go into great detail, I wounder if you have got the connection yet between Ralph and Maxim??? Also we have a little introduction to Lord Jericho Black the Marquis of Wessex, his book is book 5 in the series.

I will give this book 5/5 stars and if you are fan of Carole's books then I know you will love it as much as I did.

This is a first for me - although I have read a few of Carole's books before - not least all the previous books in this series - I have not felt the urge to write a review of them - immensely enjoyable though they have been! After reading one, I have automatically pre-ordered the next, and would give them all five stars! The Sinners series is absolutely great - rollicking good reads. With Heather and Maxim's story, however, I think, Carole you have surpassed yourself! This story is five stars plus for me. The two main protagonists are both complex, damaged individuals, who are somehow strengthened by the circumstances that befell them. They sizzle when they are together, however much they wish they didn't!

I never really like to talk about plot in a review - why spoil someone else's pleasure? Suffice it to say, this is a fab read, one of a scintillating series. If you love regency romance, give yourself a treat and read this book.

These books as the strong heroes hunt for the spy to the French are such a good way to escape. Carole Mortimer manages to write each book in the seeies that while continue the main story arc completely differ in the hero and heroines own storylines. Well worth a read although start with book 1!
