4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,357 ratings

The shocking second book in The Pleasure Wars series by USA Today Bestselling Historical Romance Author Jess Michaels

Her mother's madness and her father's and brother's irresponsibility have relegated Lady Portia to the life of a wallflower. The only shining light in her life is her best friend, Ava, who is suffering a rift with her own brother. Portia's quest to help takes her to the notorious Donville Masquerade in the hells, where-behind the safety of a mask-she witnesses shocking public acts of sin. And succumbs to the touch of Marquis Miles Weatherfield. Unfortunately, they're discovered. And now, tainted by scandal, she and Miles are destined for a marriage neither of them want. But Portia makes a bargain that raises even Miles's eyebrows. In return for saving her mother from the asylum, Portia will do anything Miles wants in bed. Shocked by his driving desire for Portia, Miles agrees.

As they explore every wicked desire, every forbidden act that pleases them, they discover something that goes far deeper than flesh. But the lies that brought them together could be the very wedge that drives them apart.

Jess Michaels is a USA Today Bestselling Author who likes geeky stuff like Star Wars, playing video games, Bob’s Burgers and collecting POPs! She also drinks a LOT of Diet Coke. Probably an unhealthy amount, but it’s her only vice. She will eat (almost) anything coconut, truly anything cheesy and nothing spicy (yes, she is a walking stereotype when it comes to that). She likes cats, her dog Elton and people who care about the welfare of their fellow humans.

Although she started out traditionally published by Avon/HarperCollins, Pocket, Hachette and Samhain Publishing, in 2015 she went fully indie and has never looked back! She is lucky enough to be married to her favorite person in the world and live tucked between the ocean and the mountains in Oregon.

When she’s not watching Our Flag Means Death or trying out all the new flavors of Greek yogurt, she writes historical romances with amazing heroes and sassy heroines who do anything but wait to get what they want.

Miles and Portia meet at a Masquerade party for the second time and are found in a compromising position by Portia evil abusive brother. Marquis Miles Weatherfield marries Portia. They had been childhood friends and it was a surprise for Miles to find out the the massed women was Portia. He thought she was just some light skirt.

Let me say I LOVED Miles and Portia. This was a very romantic and very erotic story of two people who had been badly abused by their fathers. The story tells of their trying to adapt to married life and overcoming feelings of unworthiness. Miles is so loving and romantic with the virginal innocent Portia. Every girl should have a Miles LOL!! Portia was his equal in kindness, respect and loyalty. Portia was written perfectly for the HR period she lived in. She Was Not one of those annoying heroine that you read so much about today. Portia is a character you will love!!. I think her and Miles worked together to have a perfect marriage. This story is marriage building at its best. The two of them worked through their problems and lack of self confidence and grew together as a couple, instead of running from their problems or pretending they didn't exist.

Pleasuring a Lady is a very romantic and erotic makes you fell good romance story. All the characters are written very well. I just want to Say Well Done Ms. Michaels Very Well Done!! This is a must read for all HR fans.

Pleasuring the Lady, the second book in the Pleasure Wars series from Jess Michaels, is an erotic Regency story. We met the heroine, Portia, in the first Pleasure Wars book (Taken by the Duke) and the hero, Miles, appeared in another Jess Michaels book, An Introduction to Pleasure. Jess Michaels is no stranger to historical erotica and she knows how to titillate the reader in order to propel the story forward.

Lady Portia’s life is pretty much a mess. Her father and now her brother have ruined the family finances. Her mother suffers from some form of dementia. Portia accepts her life as a wallflower, her one joy being in her friendship with Ava (the heroine of Taken by the Duke). When Ava bemoans the suffering and disappearance of her brother Liam (his story is presented in Taken by the Duke) Portia decides to look for him in the last place he was seen, the decadent Donville Masquerade. There she does not find Liam, but runs into an old friend of her brother, Miles, the Marquis of Weatherfield. He doesn’t recognize, but is strangely attracted to her. On a subsequent trip to the masquerade they are discovered in a compromising situation and are forced to marry. From there they struggle to establish a solid relationship while experimenting with various sexual situations.

I always enjoy Jess Michaels’ books and this one is no exception. Pleasuring the Lady was a good continuation of the story begun in Taken by the Duke and I recommend reading them in order. We learned very little new information about Liam so readers will certainly look forward to his story in Beauty and the Earl, coming in April. Portia was a very sympathetic character and I felt for her struggles with her mother and brother. Miles was intriguing and complex. He believed that he was bound by his history and could not love, yet he was kind and caring. For me, Jess Michaels books fall on the lighter side of erotic romance. While she includes some things that would definitely put the book into the erotic category, it is not nearly as far-gone or crude as many other examples of historical erotica. It is important for readers to know, however, that this is a very hot romance, sexual activity is central to the story, and it goes beyond “vanilla” sex. As much as I liked Pleasuring the Lady I did not enjoy it as much as the previous book. I felt like there was a little less emotional depth. I thought Michaels’ portrayal of her brother was unexplainably harsh and one-dimensional. The erotic parts were interesting, but it seemed like the author was trying to include some explicit stuff that was not always needed in the story. It was, however, a quick and compelling read and I cannot wait for the final book in this series.

This is the 2nd book in the Pleasure Wars Series. Lady Portia has spent a life time being hurt and disappoint by others. She has sacrificed her life to care for and protect her mentally ill mother, her brother keeps them hidden away with little funds and is looking for an excuse to place his mother in the madhouse.
Portia’s best friend Ava (heroine for the 1st book) is desperate to find her brother and believes he may be hiding at the Donville Masquerade in the hells. Curious about the things that occur at the Masquerade, Portia decides to go there and look for Ava’s brother, instead she finds herself in the arms of the Marques of Weatherfield (Miles) and former friend to her brother.
Compromised and headed for the altar, Portia decides to bargain with Miles, he may have her body in any way he pleases and he will save her mother from the asylum. Miles eagerly agrees to the bargain but can they put their emotions aside and just enjoy each other’s bodies or will their hearts soon follow?
Wonderful read! I loved Portia and Miles, the story is very sweet and emotional but it also has a very hot and sexy side that keeps you wishing it wouldn’t end. Looking forward to the 3rd book in the steamy series.

First I should say that I think I should stop reading romance for a while alltogether. As it is, reading an average of 3 to 4 books per week, I feel as if I've already read this storyline many times before, can predict what is going to happen/where the angst is going to come from from the start and can even predict the protagonists personalities upon introduction(which is not a difficult task as in most romances there is always one if not both of them who "hides" past heartbreak and due to that refuses to love again). As for the sex scenes, when you've read many steamy books and some of them have been pretty good ones, they have to be really well written for them to make you feel any heat.

It gets really boring and frustrating.

All this said, this is not a bad read although it is quite predictable and not all that hot.

. . keine Ahnung wie ich das nennen soll . . .

A naughty but sweet little piece of erotica. Oh I know the format is fairly similar to all others of this genre, but I love it nonetheless! I have no idea if some of the concepts in this book would have happened at this stage in history; they feel quite modern. But I forgive the author as the book still made me smile.... A little poetic license is allowed. After all, if I wanted a history lesson I wouldn't be referring to this section of the library!
