- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2014Short this story may be, but it was as delicious and potent as the punch served during Delilah Drummond's New Year's party at which the hero and heroine fall in love.
Actually, this piece was the prequel that introduces a now greatly anticipated novel. Unlike some, this is not just merely a teaser. It had a good strong plot, developed characters and finished feel while exciting the interest in what is to come. And while this is a prequel to City of Jasmine, it is also directly connected and loosely functions as a prequel to A Spear of Summer Grass which is Delilah's story which I highly recommend too.
The story opens with Delilah Drummond discovering her husband Johnny has signed up to fight in the war over in France. She is fearful for him, but doesn't want to send him off with her tears so she is determined to throw him a New Year's Eve Party. At this party, she hopes to play matchmaker to a few of her friends so she sends them an invitation.
Evie has been hustled as the poor orphaned relation between several members of the family and finally ends up in a cheap flat with a cranky roommate and little in the way of future prospect. Getting Delilah's invitation seems like an opportunity that for just one night to be someone fun and do something exciting. So off to eccentric Aunt Dove she goes for her makeover and in the process some surprising life advice.
Gabriel Starke, a confirmed bachelor and famous mountaineer, is surprised to get Delilah's invitation, but it is the insistence of his acquaintance Quentin that he might have found him a sponsor who will attend the part that has him attending.
Delilah may have planned to set up Evie with Quentin and the statuesque Norse model with Gabriel, but fate took a hand and it was Evie who accompanied Gabriel to the rooftop to dance under the stars and fall in love.
Quentin along with the quiet unassuming Tarquin see it all and feel their prospective trainee for something secretive, Gabriel Starke, has disappointed them by his gutsy move, but Tarq later decides to give Gabriel one more chance to choose between Evie and England.
I loved this story and it has done the job of making me eager to read the book it leads into. I loved the delft hand at foreshadowing that was done with Gabriel and Evie's story that makes me anticipate what is to come both the bad and the good. The crossover characters and their scenes were a nice surprise. Knowing Delilah's story from her book, this was a bittersweet read for me. I loved seeing her and Johnny fresh and in love before all that came after. Yep, the eyes teared right up.
So, now onward to City of Jasmine and the promise of more Gabriel and Evie and the delightful Aunt Dove.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2014The early 1900's just happen to be one of my most favorite time periods to read about and when you combine that with one of my most favorite historical writers, you have a win win situation.
Raybourn is truly a master at her craft. She is just an amazing writer that creates amazing storylines and characters and her Lady Julia Grey series happens to be one of my all time favorite series.
I just knew with that series being put on hold (at least I am really hoping it is only being put on hold) I missed her writing and decided that it was about time that I branched out and tried another one of her books. When I saw this prequel to a book set during WWI I knew I had found the one to try.
And can I say for the record that I loved it? It has all the magic from her Julia series but in a completely different era with completely different characters. It was fabulous. This may be a novella but it is packed full of goodness that by the end, leaves you craving the next book.
With romance in the air and mystery and dangers afoot, I can not wait to dive into City of Jasmine.
Once again I am blown away by Raybourn's talent and skill. I just know this will be one of those books that will stay with me long after I have read it and one that I will eagerly devour when it is released.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2014I am not going to read anymore of this little novellas. while they are pleasant, they simply don't have the impact the characters have with a more detailed plot and longer read. this is a personal preference, of course. the writing is still good, but the plots are bit thin for even a period romance/mystery piece as far as I am concerned.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2014When socialite Delilah Drummond's husband Johnny breaks the news that he's enlisted, she refuses to cry -- rather, she'll do what Delilah does best, and throw a New Year's Eve party to remember. She's determined that she and Johnny will ring in the year 1915 in style, making memories to treasure while they're far apart, separated by the conflict riddling Europe. In typical Delilah style this will be the party to remember, and as such she can't resist a bit of good-natured match-making between a few select invitees -- among them the dashing explorer Gabriel Stark, and the charming, if down-on-her-luck Evie Merriweather. Gabriel and Evie aren't intended for each other, but on that London night, with the magical promise of the new year in the air, when their eyes lock across the room sparks fly and they begin to write their own love story. But with the specter of war hovering over the festivities, and Gabriel's every move watched by those who would seek to utilize his special skill set and bravado in service to king and country, can a romance sparked by the magic of New Year's hope to survive the realities of a world at war?
Whisper of Jasmine is Deanna Raybourn's latest novella, a stunning prequel to her forthcoming release City of Jasmine (due to release February 25!). Similar in tone to last year's novella, Far in the Wilds, this story showcases Raybourn's penchant for penning an unforgettable, pitch-perfect Edwardian-era adventure. I didn't realize going into this story that Whisper of Jasmine features Delilah Drummond, heroine of A Spear of Summer Grass, the full-length follow-up to Far in the Wilds. Somehow 2013 got away from me without reading that novel, a fact I plan to rectify THIS MONTH. Knowing that novel deals with Delilah coming to terms with the aftermath of the Great War in her own life, this glimpse into her pre-war life is bittersweet and heart-rending -- but beautifully, vividly rendered on the page.
Simply put, I ADORED this introduction to Evie and Gabriel. The orphaned Evie, long shuttered between relations and struggling to make ends meet, is a wonderfully spunky, vibrant heroine. And I ADORED her Aunt Dove's role as an eccentric fairy godmother/adventuress, whose refurbished Worth gown gives Evie an entrance to Delilah's party that rivals any Cinderella herself. For a story set against the grim backdrop of the Great War, this story is a beautiful, gorgeous, heart-stopping (and humorous) fairy tale. I loved every second. And the clues dropped throughout the narrative regarding Gabriel's war work were the icing on the cake -- a swoon-worthy, whirlwind romance and a dash of old-fashioned spy-craft? A dream come true!
Whisper of Jasmine positively sparkles, and I cannot WAIT to discover the rest of Evie and Gabriel's story -- and the promised return of Aunt Dove's witticisms! -- in City of Jasmine. This novella is an absolute delight from start to finish -- very, very well-done Ms. Raybourn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaser.
This is another great teaser for both a Spear of Summer Grass and for City of Jasmine. It's back story for both Delilah and Evangeline and Gabriel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit of fun set in Edwardian WW1 London
Delilah Drummond, a London socialite, determines to have a last big bash before her husband, Johnny, sets off for the war. And it's New Year's Eve, an ideal date for such a party. Delilah is determined to set up a number of her friends with each other so they can be deliriously happy as she is having now find Johnny.
Enter Evangeline Merriwether and Gabriel Starke. Evangeline is a bit of a recluse but has a feisty and fun Aunt Dove who happens to have a way with needles and thread so she dresses her niece in an extravagant gown for the night. Aunt Dove is quite the character and a number of her tips on how to choose the right man certainly made me laugh.
Gabriel is a mountaineer without much of an income to his name but he is charming and chivalrous.
Evangeline and Gabriel bump into each other at the party (literally) and it's not long before fireworks go off within the newly acquainted twosome's hearts as they watch the ones full of colour and noise erupt in the air over London as the clock strikes midnight.
A delightful short tale that serves as an introduction to a longer story that I understand features our two new lovebirds and the state of their union.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great trip from Deanna Raybourn.
I always look forward to one of Deanna's novels and this one again didn't disappoint. I felt like I was there in the desert with the characters and I especially love the fact that her heroine is such a strong, feisty woman who breaks all stereotypes and lives for adventure, while not afraid of her romantic side. She is flawed, as are all the characters, even the seemingly perfect Gabriel.
