Steve Cole's first two Young Bond novels were good. But Strike Lightning is a HUGE step up. In my opinion, it is far and away Steve's best Young Bond novel, and one that even challenges Charlie Higson's books. I'd even place it in my top ten best James Bond continuation novels. Maybe what I like best about this adventure is it has a strong narrative flow and a great sense of the period (the 1930s). Also, this time Steve doesn't overpopulate the book with Bond's friends along for the ride. Here we only have a Bond ally (Perry Mandeville) and a Bond girl (Kitty Drift). Classic. In fact, this one truly nails all the aspects of a classic James Bond adventure, and continues the story of Young Bond very effectively. I can't wait for Steve's next.

Steve Cole continues to grow into the role of the Young Bond chronicler. The style of this adventure closely matches the earlier efforts of Charlie Higson so well done. The challenge for the Young Bond continuation is to move the time line along to take Bond away from "what I did in my holidays" towards the man he is to become.

a bit more science fictiony than my taste, much like the Moore Bond of the 70's and 80's. but still, a fast paced yarn with lots of great Fleming touches throughout.

Another fun outing for the young James Bond, and even though it was interesting and engaging plot, there is still a serious lack of character development of the surrounding people. The villain especially was pretty much a nobody.

Another quick enjoyable read of a famous character's backstory.

As written before, a step towards the great Charlie Higson's books, but still not there. By the way: the really bad translations of german phrases (reminding me of terrible 60's movies) are really annoying - as if Google Translate were used?! Why not asking a native speaker for correct translations?

The third book in Steve Cole's Young Bond series (which itself is a continuation of Charlie Higson's five-book series) sees the teenage James Bond take up a place at Fettes - a traditional Scottish public school. Idyllic school life doesn't last long though - when Bond encounters a suspicious teacher and his assistant, and one of his schoolfriends is struck by lightning.

It's another really great adventure in this series that paints a good picture of its locations and time in the 1930s. I've read a number of historical young adult novels recently and it's really great how authors are telling thrilling but authentic stories from this time.

There is a touch of science fiction to the story, and I'm in two minds as to whether or not this works. It is a staple of Bond fiction and film to depict technology that's a step ahead of reality, but that's easier to consume when it's in a contemporary setting than in the past.

Overall an enjoyable read that adds another view of the era that shapes the character that we see in the later, original novels, as well as being an entertaining and age-appropriate adventure for younger readers.
