Hollywood Games: A Hollywood Alphabet Series Thriller Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 788 ratings

LAPD cop Kate Sexton is back in Hollywood after taking a much needed vacation with her canine partner, Bernie.

Hollywood Games is a puzzle that begins with a tough but vulnerable cop trying to put her life back together. Add in a hyperactive canine partner who’s already sired a love-puppy named Bubba, a new homicide partner who is allergic to dead bodies, and Kate’s meddling best friends, Natalie and Mo, who think they’re the world’s greatest private detectives.

The puzzle pieces are scattered when a high-profile realtor is found murdered, floating in his hot tub, and his partner looks good for the crime. But Kate isn’t convinced and works the case until she realizes the killing might have ties to the victim’s many love interests and the largest gang in Hollywood.

The final pieces of the puzzle come into play when Kate’s love life takes an unexpected turn, she has to move on short notice with her friends into a spooky dilapidated mansion owned by a deceased actor, and the city is threatened with a gang war.

Join Kate as she struggles to repair a personal life that’s gone off the rails while she tries to solve a crime with more twists and turns than a street in the Hollywood Hills. Throw in equal parts of humor and suspense, and you’ve got Hollywood Games, the seventh novel in the funny, crazy, wild lives of Detective Kate Sexton and her canine partner, Bernie.

The Hollywood Alphabet series is remarkable for the unique characters, exciting stories and great humor. Kelly defines each individual with precision and depth. This episode takes place back in Hollywood, but the romance kindled on Catalina Island continues as a recurring item. Kate works a murder with a new partner, while the gang is forced to move to an estate with resident vampire and a raven with a vocabulary of swear words. This is an enjoyable read.

This is a pretty decent series. There is supposed to be a "hidden" phrase or something related to Hollywood, and you go tot he author's webpage, and can win something? Well, I guess I'm not up on Hollywood because I've never found whatever it is. I just read the stories for their entertainment value. I would probably be too late for any prizes anyway as I'm reading the books years after published. Anyway, this was a pretty good book. Characters are real and the law and crime parts are fairly accurate. Worth the read for sure.

Det Kate returns to work after an extended vacation on Catalina Island. She is thrown into a murder investigation of a high profile realtor when she learns the hard way that her new partner, who wants to become a famous actor, has an aversion to seeing dead bodies when he vomits on her shoes at the murder scene. As usual, nothing is as it seems and they end up with several suspects and 2 more dead bodies, one of which is thought to be unrelated at first. Kate and her roommates have to move with very short notice when their landlady, Nana, decides to follow her boyfriend Elvis to Vegas for a gig and rents out her house. Natalie and Mo find a deal on an estate in the Hollywood Hills and upon everyone moving in it's discovered that there is already a man living there who claims he is the rightful heir to the estate being a cousin. The estate's attorney explains that everyone may live there until it goes through probate making no one happy. Besides Kate, Mo, and Natalie, Mo's boyfriend Larry and his brother Phyllis, their mother wanted a girl, move in to help with repairs to the house and grounds which had been left to disrepair for years. Kate had told her halfsister Lindsey that she could live with her as well before she was aware that they had to move out of Nana's. The cousin, whom Natalie and Mo called Dracula due to his palor packed up his few belongings and moved to the basement rooms. He took the raven with him who liked to swoop down on people and screech F-you! at people. Finally, Kate's good friend, Brie and her 5 yr old daughter, split from her husband so Kate offers her the carriage house apartment. Brie is also the coroner. This is only the half of it all! It's a fast paced mystery that keeps you guessing who's doing what to whom with several twists in the end. The humor never fails to entertain.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I got it out of curiosity and based on reviews. He obviously has a big fan base, but I don't agree with their enthusiasm with this author. Read Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels and you'll get the same thing. Except with a bail bondsman instead of a policeman.
Kate's dog seemed like an unnecessary accessory, like a large purse or high heels. Mentioned, included, but just.... there. I don't understand why the dog is even part of the story. Her friends are SO one note and monotomus. Sex blah blah sex blah blah joke about sex blah blah big boobs blah blah I heard something blah blah sex blah blah sex blah blah. While there are a few things I enjoyed and there were attempts to get Kate's character to evolve and grow (though no other characters), I did not enjoy this.

characters are fully defined with their own unique personality traits. Each character is integral to the story line and there are no unnecessary passages. It goes along at a good clip and the story evolves as it should. Not too complicated to follow and the story has a beginning, middle and ending that all makes sense. And of course there is the dog. Gotta love a book with a dog named Bernie. I did love this book and will become a follower of M.Z. Kelly.

'Hollywood Games' is another great book in 'A Hollywood Alphabet Series'. This series gets better and better. I loved the storyline and how it played out. Full of action, suspense, thrills, a ton of humor and some questionable circumstances. I love how Kate gets herself into the craziest scenarios. Her friends are a riot. I love the characters. They are definitely a colorful bunch. M.Z. Kelly is very creative when it comes to his stories. I can't wait to read the next book. A must add to your tbr list.

This is part of a series but like all good detective stories, they are also standalone stories!
Based in Hollywood, the plot revolves around the rich and famous. This story begins with the murder of a tv estate agent, who seems to have a lot of enemies. Drugs, sex and gambling also feature heavily in his life.
A good whodunnit. I will continue to read the series 👍🏻

After I read and reviewed the first book 'Assassin' I was eager to read another from the series. Although the Kate Sexton character I enjoyed from that first book was still there, she was joined by a menagerie of weirdos that detracted from the main thrust of the plot. There was too much going on. Sometimes less is more.
