Big Pete (Privateer Tales Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,107 ratings

The fourth in the Privateer Tales series, this short story (47 pages) steps back in time to the Great Amazonian War. .

Shot down behind enemy lines, all Marine Sergeant Pete Hoffen can think of is getting the remainder of his beleaguered platoon back to the extraction zone. But when a cocky, PITA lieutenant orders him to leave behind one of his own, he'll have nothing to do with it.

Big Pete fights to locate his men and get the wounded out of the city, rescue his missing pilot, and avoid ripping the entire city down around him. His capture brings an entirely new problem. Who will rescue the rescuer?

There's a reason Liam Hoffen goes up against great odds in order to do the right thing. He learned from his father that sacrifice and honor go hand in hand.

Jamie McFarlane is a graduate of Colorado School of Mines with a Master of Science in Mathematics. An avid reader, tinkerer, woodworker and metal sculptor, Jamie is just as likely to be seen smelting aluminum cans in his garage as he is tacking random, discarded iron objects into a small army of beasties that adorn his home’s landscaping.

Jamie’s writing career began as something of a dare which later turned into a tribute. In his late teens, Jamie was well known as the family story-teller, spinning fanciful yarns about ordinary events, usually with the objective of escaping well-deserved trouble. One day, his mother, often the target of his mischievous tales, challenged him to commit his words to writing. Jamie promised he would but time passed, as did his beloved mother. In 2014, Jamie made good on his promise and published his first book.

Jamie is the author of a growing library of novels and novellas of military science fiction titles including Junkyard Pirate and the Privateer Tales series.

Non-stop action throughout. Great short story. Looking forward to more action packed adventure as the Privateer adventure continues. Good reading.

This was a nice little short story that gives some backstory for Pete and Silver. On to the next book.

Boy meets girl, blows up some buildings to rescue girl, girl rescues boy . . . well, that's another story! LOL Only a few characters with speaking parts, but the character leads brought the action! And there was plenty of action. We're talking Marines, Baby! No super weapon, but good use of current weaponry. Sure there was a blaster on stun or two, but it is a sci-fi military action novel! Great characters, good action, and a storyline with a great interior shift of roles and great storytelling by a skilled storyteller. Great all round! This is a fantastic read!

We learn some back story in this short tale. We also get some very good, authentic-seeming combat sequences that involve the father of the main thread central character. We have a good character developed here from the most cautious outlines given to us in the main sequence of the series.
I sort of like having a quick little story, well written, to amplify the main sequence. In Big Pete, we get some conversation among the soldiers that certainly seems realistic to me, a common civilian.
A good addition to the growing body that makes up the Rookie Privateer series.

This is book four of this series. Good plot and character development for main line characters of the series. My complaint was this was a short story. I was expecting a full length novel which is my bad because I did not read sales information closely!

Privateers is a good read with well-developed characters and an entertaining story line. It is the first series that I have read in a very long time that had well developed foundational science on which the rest of the story framework is based. The use of AI, smart fabric, and Internet of things, was very well integrated into the story and extended into the future. The only nits I have to pick with the series are the improbable interrelationships between some of the characters, the illogical expansion from the Milky Way to the Dwingeloo galaxy, which is 10 million light-year away from Earth. There are many other choices much closer, such as Andromeda, at 2.5 million. Additionally, it is unlikely that the 100 to 400 billion stars within the Milky Way could have been explored. One last nick pick, was the reference to the Marny Bertrand, a former Marine, who is referred to as a Master Chief, which is a Navy rank. The correct rank for a Marine E9 would be Master Gunnery Sergeant, or Gunny.

Writing style of a 1950s detective novel - short active sentences tell the adventures that led to two Marines getting married. These are Liam Hoffen's parents. You also get a glimpse of a younger Ms Sterra of "Sterra's Gift."
It's great learning the backstory of you have been reading the story. It's also good as a stand-alone novelette.

I'd rate this PG-13 mostly for violence, mild language and pseudo-language.

I recommend this book.

So this little ditty threw me for a loop. Turns out Mr. McFarlane can spin a pretty good short story too. Even though I was kinda looking forward to something a little longer, this, actually, was just the right length to tie up some loose ends that were left dangling in Privateer books 1 & 3. Great read nonetheless.

Loved the tale. Would make into a good novel about the Amazonian conflict if expanded upon. Would have liked to have the ending love story fleshed out as part of a bigger picture of Petes past.

Good back story filler in the privateer saga. Short, but satisfying episode in this Heinleinian series.
