May McGoldrick, Nik James, and Jan Coffey are pen names for USA Today bestselling authors Nikoo Kafi and Jim McGoldrick. Together, they have crafted over fifty fast-paced, conflict-filled historical, contemporary, and Western novels, and two works of nonfiction.

Nikoo’s education and training was in engineering. She worked in robotics and submarine shipbuilding. Before earning a PhD in sixteenth-century Scottish and English literature, Jim pursued a hundred and one jobs, including a decade in submarine construction.

Storytellers at heart, Nikoo and Jim were always searching for careers that gave them time for both family and writing. Then, after thirteen years of marriage, they recognized each other’s creative strengths. Nikoo is all about characters and feeling. Jim is about action and sense of place. Their first attempt in writing fiction together produced their award-winning novel, The Thistle and the Rose. Since then, their stories have touched the hearts and minds of millions of readers all over the world. Their work has been translated into over a dozen languages and counting.

Nikoo and Jim are four-time Rita Finalists and the winners of numerous awards for their writing, including the Daphne DeMaurier Award for Excellence, the Romantic Times Magazine Reviewers’ Choice Award, three NJRW Golden Leaf Awards, two Holt Medallions, and the Connecticut Press Club Award for Best Fiction.

The authors make their home in California.

Both of the stories in this duo package deal with heroines that are strong women out of the norm, who have been living secret lives because of a promise they made and held as a sacred trust. The heros who come to respect and love them must do so after accepting that these women have other commitments and secrets that require these men to totally revise their thinking about what a woman can be.

The stories also touch on some serious topics such as the terrible poverty and abandoned children in London, slavery, domestic abuse, and the oppression of the Irish farmers by the English land owners. There are sexual scenes in both stories, as well as violence, including some toward women and children but it fits into the context of the plot.

These stories are well written and well edited with characters of substance and plots that will keep the reader engaged until the end. The hero of the second story is a friend in the first. The couple from the first story make a repeat appearance in the second story, so that the reader gets to keep up with their progress, which is a nice touch. One of the other supporting characters from the first story also gets her own book, and the author includes a short preview of that as well. I enjoyed these stories very much and recommend highly.

Heat factor hot.

I have read many of May McGoldrick's books over the years and I can truthfully say that I have enjoyed them all.. Secret Vows is no exception. Both stories in this book are definitely worth your time to enjoy. The first is about the Earl of Stanhope and his bride, Rebecca, who has been raising his son, Jamie, for the past ten years in the Colonies. It's where we first meet Nicholas, who is the hero in the second book, with his love, Jane, who leads him on a merry chase. I like her books because it's not just about the romance but issues from the times.. The Earl was fighting slavery in the House of Lords and Jane was the rebel fighting injustice to the Irish. And we get to see the Earl and Rebecca again a year and a baby later in Nicholas' story :-) I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did :-)

Secret Vows was Fabulous!! A very refreshing romance story with the right touch of history, politics, mystery and lots of witty fun moments! I'm a first time reader by Ms. McGoldrick and im now anxious to read the next book. Lord Stanmore and Mrs. Ford (Rebecca) had me laughing till the end.

The Rebel, the second book in this amazing edition, was by far one of the most touching, intense, courageous and juicy romances I have read as of late. With Ireland's beautiful land as the background, The Rebel will touch your hearts as Nick and Jane find the meaning of true Love but not before struggling to disband everything that holds them apart.

You will love Secret Vows.

These two books were awesome! I did not want to put them down. They were very fast-paced and the stories are based on actual facts from that era. The love stories involved in both were so gripping and you just couldn't wait to see where and how they would manage to come together. I definitely recommend this author and these stories The Promise and The Rebel!!!

I really enjoyed this box set. In fact I always enjoy the McGoldrick books. They usually have more than one plot going on at a time, and the history is spot on. I also like the fact that there's always a sim pathetic social subject in most of her novels. They're not just the average historical romance. I will always be a fan. This box set will not disappoint!

Bretton Girl
1.0 out of 5 stars Author's biased portrayal of history in the first story in this book soured any enjoyment I might have had
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2014
Rebecca (the heroine)and the Earl of Stanmore(the cold but philanthropic, abolitionist hero) are reasonably well written and the plot is engaging.
So why only one star? Well, whatever the nationality of the author I dislike writers using their work to portray facts in a biased way.
Rebecca was born in England and fled to America to avoid being punished for her killing an aristocrat in self defense, she eventually settled in Philadelphia where the Quaker colony there influenced the freeing of slaves locally. Rebecca and her adopted son James rightly criticize the treatment of slaves they witness in an English dockyard and compare this to the Quaker colonies approach. Throughout the story they continue to make these unfavourabe comparisons between their American experience and what they see in England.
So, nothing wrong with that right? Well, the author and Rebecca who was an intelligent well read woman conveniently ignore the more pertinent facts.
English business men capturing and transporting African slaves were largely feeding American and West Indies demand. Their amoral greed was reprehensible, but I note American business men were doing the same. Yet no slave ships are mentioned coming into the American ports where Rebecca arrived and departed from the States.
The 1800 census in America listed in excess of 890 thousand slaves, in Engand at the same time slaves likely only numbered in the lower thousands, as around 60 years later the people in the black colonies clustered around British ports (and most black English people lived in these) only numbered around 15 thousand.
Yet the author conveniently focuses only on the Quaker influenced Philadelphia and ignores the real picture across the rest of America at the time, a real picture that Rebecca would be aware of but does not mention at all.
This biased, selective and one might even say hypocritical portrayal of the facts is something I feel uncomfortable with and it totally soured any enjoyment of the story that I might have had. I actually removed book from my library and did not finish it.
