When waking from your dream means living your nightmare...

The last time the dream came, Sam was seven years old; and that was the night her parents were to die.

Twenty-five years later, Sam's nightmares are starting to come true once more. Now a successful TV commercials producer, juggling her roles of career woman, wife and mother, she attempts to shut them out.

But soon Sam is faced with the reality of dreams in which her life and that of her family are threatened. In desperation, she consults the experts: a psychiatrist; a clairvoyant ... but to no avail.

Sam is being inexorably drawn into a vortex of terror from which there is no escape...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

James ( Possession ) spins this generally engrossing horror tale around the precognitive dreams of a young British mother and advertising executive. As a child, Samantha Curtis sent a hooded rapist hurtling to his death as she fought off his attack. Thereafter, her periodic dreams of that frightening event have preceded personal tragedies. After the last dream 25 years ago, her parents died in an automobile accident. Now the hooded man has returned in a series of dreams that presage horrors both personal and public: an airline crash, a scary moment during her son's birthday party, a gruesome rape and murder in a subway station. At the same time, Sam is also torn by her husband's increasing dependence on a mysterious Swiss banker. While the ending may not deliver the payoff that readers will expect, overall Samantha's story is satisfactory and pleasingly scary.

From Library Journal

As a child, Samantha Curtis was attacked by a hooded man; she fought him off and maimed him. Now a woman in a strained marriage, with not enough time for her work, her husband, and her child, she has begun to dream about the hooded man--and her dreams are coming true. An airplane crash and a murder in a tube station take place exactly as she pictured them. Neither she nor the reader knows whether the horrifying things she is experiencing are real or simply more horrifying prophetic visions. No one wants to take her precognition seriously. But her dreams are right--the hooded man has returned, and he does intend to kill her. A very unsettling novel. Recommended for horror fiction collections.

I've enjoyed books by the same author before. But this one was no good, basically because I neither like nor believe in the supernatural and this one was far beyond anything.

Not one of his best. Later novels excel. If you like fantasy, this is for you.. I was disappointed after reading his more recent novels.

Dreamer by Peter.James
A very strange book. Very bitty and fragmented in places. Found it quite hard to give it my full concentration.
I have read a couple of James’s books in the past and the first one I found in the local Library. It is called Dead Simple and is in his Roy Grace series. This is one of the best books I have ever read. The later ones of his I have had ,have not come anywhere near to this by comparison.
This book i have just finished is a story about a married lady who has continual dreams which appear to come true, and her very long quest to find someone to help her to stop having these nightly episodes .

Although it was definitely a page turner, I found it rather disjointed in places and was very disappointed in the storyline .

This story took a while to get going.
It didn't make a lot of sense and was ruined by all of the unnecessary blaspheming.
I persevered but regret paying for this one.
I prefer his Grace books
