NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From Tess Gerritsen, bestselling author of the Rizzoli & Isles series, her stunning first thriller!

A beautiful young woman’s corpse is found dumped in a garbage-strewn alley. Now laid out in the office of medical examiner Kat Novak is an unidentified body that betrays no secrets—except for a matchbook clutched in one stiff hand, seven numbers scrawled inside. When a second victim is discovered, Kat begins to fear that a serial killer is stalking the streets, using a deadly drug to do his dirty work. The police are skeptical. The mayor won’t listen. One of the town’s most prominent citizens, with a missing daughter of his own, is also Kat’s chief suspect. As the death toll rises, Kat races to expose a deadly predator who is close enough to touch her.

From the Back Cover

A scientist meets a grisly end when he falls from a military research ship and is attacked by a two-ton white shark off the Japanese coast. By the time Special Investigator Vin Cooper reaches the scene, there s literally very little left to prove that the death wasn t an accident. But Cooper s instincts tell him that he s looking at murder and that in assigning him to this case someone might just as well have shoved him, too, into shark-infested waters.

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.

While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction and in 1987, her first novel, Call After Midnight, was published. It was just the first of 32 suspense novels that she’s written over a 36-year writing career. She also wrote a screenplay, "Adrift," which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.

Tess's 1996 medical thriller, Harvest, marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list and her novels have hit bestseller lists around the world ever since. Tess is an excellent writer and her sequent to a crime mystery writer is exceptional. Keeping the romance in the story is the perfect balance. Well written as usual very entertaining with the who done it element throughout. Kat is a street savvy medical examiner with grit who embarks on solving the epidemic of drug overdoses by a mystery street drug. Adam the blue blood handsome man who's phone number is written on a matchbook gripped in a dead girls hand comes to see if he can identify the body of the Lane Doe. He is visibly shaken anticipating the viewing, who does he think she is wonders Kat. Once he sees it is not whom he fears Kat pushes him to find answers he says he doesn't have. Kat not one to back down pursues her quest to identify and stop this new dangers drug as the corpses stack up. Fighting the Mayer who doesn't care that drug users are dead and the police including the acting DA (who happens to be her ex) seem to think these useless drug users are better off dead. As Adam is the head is a pharmaceutical empire that does research and development of drugs Kat thinks he may know more than he says and as they butt heads hearts also flare. Good story worth the read.

I have been a fan for awhile having first discovered Tess through the Rizzoli & Isles series which I have completed. Am now making my way through the rest of her work & it's interesting to see where it all started & how her writing has evolved! This is a love story meets crime story, and enjoyable a read as it was, I do prefer the newer stuff.

Written in 1994, this novel was author Tess Gerritson’s first venture into the thriller genre. She had previously written romance fiction. This book contains elements of both genres. The story follows Kat Novak, a medical examiner who gets caught up in the mystery of who is responsible for the new drug killing the city’s down and out youth. Weirdly prescient for the time, the novel traces Kat’s efforts to find the source of the unknown opiate. She finds links to a pharmaceutical company’s R and D department.
Kat’s inquiries lead her to cross paths with detectives working the case who don’t seem interested in her findings. As more victims of the drug turn up in the morgue, Kat wants to go to the press to warn the public about the new street drug. The mayor who is up for reelection blocks Kat’s efforts because of the harm the new drug could do to his record. It also doesn’t help that the District Attorney is Kat’s ex-husband.
Kat interviews the CEO of the pharmaceutical company, where she suspects the drug has originated. Adam Quantrell turns out to be much as she imagined, a buttoned-up pharmaceutical executive who is quick to deny his company’s involvement and unhelpful. Yet, perversely, she finds herself attracted to him. Quantrell is hiding something. She sees he is buddies with the detectives and doesn’t trust him. As she unravels clues, Kat is drawn back to her old neighborhood, the projects she escaped from years ago. This time she’s coming as an outsider. She attracts the attention of some dangerous people.
The novel offers a few twists and turns and is an entertaining, fast read. Long-time thriller fans may figure out some details, but it still makes for an escapist diversion. This is a book to carry with you on a long plane trip.

The insight Doctor Gerritsen has into life is demonstrated in her ability to put this into writing. As a retired physician I have great admiration for her skill.

I had not read the original version of this book and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The flow was good and the story line had just the right amount of suspense and romance. A very good read. If I were to change anything it would have been to make it longer....

5.0 out of 5 stars I was speechless

Because I kept on reading and never knew I was already 96% into the book. The story was absolutely absorbing. I was following the heroine, her angst, her instability and her doubt about love.

And Adam, the man who reassured her. Letting her trust him but most time ridicule him. This is a thriller, but this pair’s chemistry, from the day they met, has brought so much substance to the action packed development of the story.

This is so breathtaking. The chase for the truth. Bodies are discovered. Then, finding out a type of drug that killed them.

I was so spellbound I could not put my Kindle down. Every opportunity I had, I fished it out and turned it on, and read. I finished reading this book in less than 40 hours.

I’m going to get more of her novels. Another 5-star read in my collection.
