Southern Rapture (The Louisiana History Collection Book 7) Kindle Edition
Lettie arrives in Reconstruction Louisiana from the northeast to teach plantation children, but also to find the man called the Thorn who murdered her brother. She takes a room at a rundown mansion with Aunt Em and her nephew Ransom who, following a head injury received in the war, has a heartbreaking smile and the mind of a boy.
The welcoming friendliness that greets her, the honest care and concern, threaten Lettie’s preconceived ideas. Her dormant sensuality comes alive in the sultry Southern heat. She is drawn to Ransom who joins the lessons she teaches but instructs her in ways she’ll never forget. And when she clashes with the Thorn in the dark, this magnificent nightrider — labeled a killer by some but courageous righter-of-wrongs by others — arouses unimagined passion.
Yet Lettie clings to her quest, coming finally to painful, secret knowledge that can become a trap for the Thorn. Using it requires only one thing — that she abandon love and desire for the cold comfort of duty.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019Lettie Mason, a Boston schoolteacher, lost her brother to an outlaw’s bullet in a small Louisiana town during the Civil War. As a result, when the war is over, she travels to that same town to learn about her brother’s death. She believes he was killed by an outlaw known as the “Thorn”. She has heard tales of his many good deeds as well as the bad. And when she encounters him in the dark, he kisses her and then, later, makes love to her. She does not resist.
Meanwhile, she has begun to teach two young men at Splendora, the estate where she is staying. One, the very handsome Ransom Tharp, who returned from the war with a head injury that left him “not quite right”. Or is he?
A local hero carries on with two personalities to help his people…a disguise that keeps him from the woman he would have. But Lettie suspects all is not as it seems.
A great story, well told by a master of historical romance. It’s part of the boxed set, “The Best of Jennifer Blake. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2015The subterfuge and duplicity were so well done which kept the suspense going constantly. The characters were well developed within a rich portrayal of life and relationships enmeshed in this setting and political struggles of the time. I also enjoy this author's use of vocabulary. I highly recommend this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2014I'm old Louisiana history teacher. I love the way Jennifer Blake uses actual facts of history in her writings. I started reading her books when I started teaching Louisiana history to acquaint myself with the authors from Louisiana, I was amazed and fell in love with her writing at that point. If you want to learn something of Louisiana's past, then read Jennifer Blake's books.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2017This is a story that sticks with you. I first read it and then added the narration and listened. The narrator's performance was excellent. She captured the voices and nuances in feelings and emotions perfectly.
In all the books from this period from this author, the stories are very formulaic. There is a long, arduous journey with countless obstacles. This one is completely different. It's organic. I expect people would be offended by some of the character portrayals but it's really not about inequality. It is how that evil was overcome. It's about so many different viewpoints and perspectives, caught in a tumultuous, uncertain time. People struggling to survive and get through so much tragedy and loss. How they held each other up and protected each other during the difficulties. Their loyalty and faithfulness no matter how convoluted.
There were a number of parts that brought excitement and suspense to the story. I believe that is what made it so enjoyable. All the development and discovery that occurs throughout the book sprinkled with humor and natural human emotions. The hero is always there protecting the heroine. Even though she doesn't know, his motivation is honorable, although how he goes about it is unconventional.
If you enjoy old movies or TV shows with smart women and strong heroes, you will love this story and see all the extraneous parts and circumstances are part of the difficult time they were living through during reconstruction.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2013On a skillfully produced background of the smells, the sounds, and the tastes of
the South, a complex and gripping plot unfolds. The characters are lively. The time
after the War Between the States is handled with sensitivity. A great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2011***Before anyone gets excited and throws accusations of spoilers, this book has a dual identity storyline. That dual identity is revealed to the reader within the first pages as well as on the book jacket***
Yankee schoolteacher Lettie Mason comes to Louisiana to find her brother's murderer - the notorious Thorn (the name comes from the calling card he leaves behind after each *crime*). Lettie takes a room at Splendora, a plantation that like most in the south has seen better days. Splendora is owned by Ransom Tyler, but the head injury he suffered in the war left him in a more child-like state and the plantation is run by his Aunt Em. Lettie soon finds herself mixed up in a swirl of intrigue and passion as she's irresistibly drawn to the man she believes murdered her brother. She also finds herself very much attracted to Ransom, but also horrified at her baser nature corrupting someone with the mind of a child, not realizing that The Thorn and Ransom are one and the same person (mind you, I am not spoiling). The story continues with the usual back and forth stuff of Lettie believing The Thorn murdered her brother along with committing other dastardly crimes, along with a mystery or two as to who the evil baddies really are and who has been stealing those Yankee payrolls.
I really really like Jennifer Blake's books, and they are generally a perfect fit for when I'm in the mood for a southern romance, but for some reason this one just didn't rock my world. The Robin Hood twist on Ransom's nighttime activities didn't work well, nor the dual identity bit - or was Lettie really that thick headed not to figure it out quicker? Are you telling me she didn't notice a similarity between The Thorn's kisses and Ransom's? I do give Blake a nod to her efforts at keeping her historical settings real, including real historical events and the big thumbs up for a set of author's notes in the end (not that common in the 80's).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2015This is a great romance surrounding the reconstruction period in Louisiana. I'm sorry to say, being raised in the north, I had no idea about the living conditions in post Civil war southern rural areas. The characters were real and likable, but the historic education that I received is incredibly valuable. So I thank Jennifer Blake for her research and sharing this story. This book is going into my favorite books collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2013Jennifer Blake has done it again. Reconstruction South comes alive in Southern Rapture. Her characters are believable with hero playing a double role and the heroine trying to decide which man she loves.

5.0 out of 5 stars she thinks too much ...
I loved the book the characters were alive and very real people I wept in relief when Bradley was saved (not for him but the tension) I wept when Johnny was discovered in the well
A lot of places I laughed and smiled and felt glad
The one thing I did not enjoy was the overthinking on Lettie's part there was so much of it
It was annoying at times to read about so much self doubt , necessary in the story however it was really annoying
The book is a masterpiece. It's a slice of life at that time and presented to us with the guarantee of a happy ending which isn't always the case in real life. The book is complex but satisfying

If you were a charitably minded, kind-hearted and chaste 19th Century virgin would you have sex in a dirty shack with the man you sincerely (although admittedly mistakenly) believed murdered and robbed your brother in cold blood?
Here is yet another example of how dreadful romance novels like this feed misogyny. So unfortunate too the rest of the book to that point was filled with pleasant descriptions of the beautiful countryside, apparently well researched historical facts and a scarlet pimpernel/robin hood style hero which I thought was an excellent idea. The sex in the shack shocker was such a let down, felt I had been robbed of the chance to read a good book, the incident didn't even seem to fit with the rest of the book up to that point.
I hate books that portray women who are supposed to be strong and principled weakly giving into their sexual urges despite incredibly good reasons not to. Its insulting to our gender and the fact it is often other women (the romance authors)that perpetrate this disservice is no small betrayal.
