If I'm Dead: A Rachel Knight Story (A Rachel Knight Novel) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 1,852 ratings

It started with a haunting image: a Ford Explorer, iridescent in the moonlight and alone on a desolate stretch of beach. Its owner, Melissa Gibbons, has gone missing. Her husband says she flew the coop. But Los Angeles Deputy DA Rachel Knight is convinced otherwise: Melissa Gibbons has been murdered.

So begins the confounding case that Rachel must present before a disbelieving jury. A dissatisfied heiress and her philandering husband -- what really happened? The husband has a fiendishly convincing case that Melissa faked her own death and fled. But with the support of her trusty sidekick, Detective Bailey Keller, Rachel pieces together a much more sinister truth.

In this short, standalone Rachel Knight thriller, readers follow our savvy and riotously entertaining heroine through the surprising world of LA crime.

This is a great short story starring Rachel Knight. She is a prosecutor in Los Angeles prosecuting a murder case without a body, which is the worse kind! If you like books with a lot of courtroom action, you will enjoy this one. You can read this one in less than 30 minutes but it will whet your appetite for more of Marcia Clark’s books about Rachel Night!

OK, I admit, I didn't do my homework, and thought I was buying a full fledged novel when I bought this (caveat emptor!) short story. While it was a fun read, it was also somewhat predictable. It was fun, and I enjoy the protagonist, ADA Rachel Knight.

I don't want to give away the ending, but if you're as old as I am, you've seen it on Perry Mason;-) And, you'll recognize it. I think I've seen it on a couple other shows of similar ilk.

For $0.99 it was worth it. And, like I said, if I'd done my due diligence, I still would have bought it, but wouldn't have been so upset on page 45 to find the end!

I have several previous stories by Ms. Clark and rate them all 5 stars. Even knowing this was a short story I found it to be severely lacking. It seemed like it was written to be an outline for a regular book but she found that she couldn't make it work and quit, instead just making it a short story. No problem, I'm still a fan and will move on to her next offering.

This is my first time to read any book written by this author but plan on buying any others she writes. The plot is a great mystery which moves along at a nice pace! The two leading characters are believable in what they do and both provide laughs along the way. The plot never drags and is a fast read! I enjoyed it very much!

This was a very interesting read but I tell you I really felt short changed. I have read all Ms Clark books and when I purchased this one I was expecting the same type as the others but instead of the build from tracking down the killer and taking him to trial, this one was so short and most of it was in the courtroom.

From that point of view it was very good and even with the suspense of will she prove he did it, it was intense. Ms Clark certainly has a way with words and this one loved up to her writing style.

A short but very good read for all mystery readers.

This is a short story that is based on an old joke that has been around for some years in the legal trade. Fortunately, I read this after reading the authors two novels otherwise I would have skipped them. If you do not know the punch line of the joke then you might be okay with this tale but I want something new. I know authors adapt material to their own uses but for some reason this irked the heck out of me.

I like the way Marcia Clark writes. She captures your interest immediately and it is fun to see if you can figure out the ending by picking up clues along the way. I have read the other Rachel Knight stories and am looking forward to the next one. The heroine is gutsy and is not afraid to stand up for justice instead of just doing her job. She goes beyond, even though she puts her job in jeopardy. She believes in truth and integrity, qualities that are sorely lacking in much of life today. I believe in the message that life is not what it seems on the surface and you need to look deeper to find the truth.

I wanted to read this book because of course I remember who Marcia Clark is. I thought it would be interesting. And it was. But I thought it was a little wooden. I also would have liked a longer book, something with more detail and maybe even a plot. Even though I gave this story a 3, I think I will read another one of her works, just to see if she gets any better, before I give up on her completely.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short & not so sweet!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 14, 2016
Good short story with usual characters, nice twist in the tail at the end.
Ms Clark's gift of describing emotions, actions & reactions are wonderful, but the brevity of this tale doesn't allow her to fully utilise her gift.
Therefore it is somewhat lacking & you do not feel the depth of empathy which is so skillfully wrought in her full length novels.
