James Altucher is real. His writing is real. You wince a bit. His candid, raw style will make you laugh, get you to ponder, you'll get angry at what shades the truth from us. He pulls you into his personal trials. He takes you along through the good and bad of his life. He's an open book. He's there to teach. All along the way you're thinking and questioning all the dogma you've been force fed your entire life. Your mind is awake. You may never feel the same again. You may not agree with some of his thoughts but it doesn't matter. There's something in this book you will learn. You'll be happier, or healthier, or smarter.

James has an amazing ability to rattle and get readers to re-think the American "religions" like owning a home (no) or going to college (why?). James has gone through more highs and lows than most living things on the planet. He has an incredible gift to not only recall the experiences, but examine them in an objective, self-reflective manner and in some way, he is all of us at different times in our own lives. His lessons are strong, built on life stories. And as a muse and teacher he shares his worst and best of times with readers so they ultimately may be better. And happy.

Some of the the most thought-provoking elements of the book: "Be a Human" beginning on page 167. Why are we angry? James is correct that we are in a depressive cycle as we've been battered by a pretty tough decade. How do you rise above? How did he? "Success is a Sexually Contagious Disease," starting on page 107, hit home for me. I've battled all the challenges he raises like sadness, forgetting who you are, anxiety, thinking that "if I get this I'll be happy." But what is true happiness? James lays it out.

Recently, I had a chance to walk NY streets with James Altucher and I shared with him my own weaknesses, my challenges because through his writings he provides insights into what makes us human, what connects us as people and also what the hell is wrong with us, too. You want to share with him you just hope you don't wind up a story in his blog! He filters lessons through his own life prism which makes the entire read entertaining as well as enlightening.

I'm carrying this book with me at all times. Readers should sign up to follow James on Twitter and sign up for his popular blog: [...]. Believe me, you won't regret it.

I think I first found James on Twitter. Someone probably retweeted him. I clicked onto his blog and instantly fell in love. If you could see a picture of me and a picture of my life, you would DEFINITELY wonder what a girl like me is doing reading a book like this. From the outside looking in, I am an Orange County Housewife who spends her days doing pilates, running along the beach, eating big salads with my friends, getting my nails done, cooking dinner for my husband and playing with my fluffy white dogs before I go to bed. But on the inside, I am a serial entrepreneur, a tech geekette, a voracious reader, a soon to be author, and owner of a small biz. Even deeper, I am a ball of anxiety, I am obsessive and compulsive, I struggle with still finding my passion and raising a teenage daughter in 2012. I don't trust people, am somewhat resentful and oftentimes jealous. And, I totally DIG James!!!
The first post I read was about entrepreneurship and I bookmarked the site looking forward to more inspiration. But what I ended up reading was post after post from James not only about small biz but about struggling with demons, working to be happier, going after what you want and not always following the herd of sheep. James writes from the MOST HONEST place I have ever read on a blog. So may people on social media/blogs try to build themselves up into the Guru of the Month. James is just honest.
I really enjoyed this book as it takes a lot of what he talks about on the blog and expands on it. I'm still not convinced on the whole "not owning a home" and "don't send your kids to college right out of high school" plan. But I am willing to listen. This isn't a self help book but I absolutely will be a better person now that I have read it. Not only to the world but to myself.
James, you rock!

One of the most inspiring and useful books that I have read. The Daily Practice is the key to Altucher's message. He advises taking care of 4 areas of your life, every day, in order to turn things around if you are at a low point or are stuck:

1. Physical - exercise, eat right, sleep 8 hours
2. Emotional - get rid of energy drains in your life, especially people who suck the life out of you. Bring people who make you feel good closer to you. Notice and label the negative thoughts in your head "not useful" and move on.
3. Mental - write down ideas every day. Lists of how you can make money, lists of ideas that could help someone else make money, ideas for a book etc.. This is the most important thing that I've taken away from James Altucher. It works!
4. Spiritual - pray, read, meditate. The most important idea here though is to constantly be grateful for every little thing that is good during your day.

He has been very successful and has failed miserably. He is not giving theoretical advice, he is passing on information that has worked in his life over and over again. If you do these 4 things your life will change for the better.

Buy the book.

And visit his awesome website: jamesaltucher.com

I hope this book helps you like it helped me!

This book has a refreshing perspective on many "sacred cows". It's honest, enlightening, and healthy. The author's idea - that we should be able to take every aspect of our lives - remove it from our commonly accepted and taken for granted area of our lives - thoroughly review it from every angle - and then make the decision that it is working or not working for us. It is honest, enabling and at this point in my life, a much needed process. He touches on such subjects as the need for colleges, buying a house, and life in a corporate cubicle. An analogy is that of taking everything out of the house and putting it on the front yard. Then deciding on each and every item before taking it back into your house. The author's point is that just because an outdated belief is promoted or handed down to you years ago, does not entitle it a place in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Inspiring. Highly recommended!

I loved this book, I love everything I've read so far by this author, it's brilliant, it's honest, it comes from the right place and is very uplifting and inspiring.

I really enjoyed the level of depth this book went into on the various ideas that the author has described in his previous work. I particularly liked the second half of the book, which is set up by the first, and is a practical set of ideas and suggestions based on the author's experiences as to how to deal with many of the problems and issues we all face on a daily basis in our lives.

I love his concept of 'the daily practice' it is a very simple system, and it really rings true to me. There are a LOT of people out there offering there ideas on optimum ways to live, they're ten a penny. This one shines, makes complete sense, and can be adapted as required to your own life to makes sure you are satisfying the 4 pillars of what comprises a stable and healthy foundation for creating and attracting success in life.

If you are new to this author's work I'd recommend starting with 'Choose Yourself' and go from there.

2.0 out of 5 stars The promotion is the best part of the work
Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2013
There is a certain enthusiasm and freshness here and certainly the promo blurbs are enticing. I bought it, didn't I? However the very personal approach, while appealing doesn't carry over into the universal sphere needed for such a topic. I read it once and was amused but I haven't touched it since. That's not the mark of a real "change your life" book. This one is a bit like a diet book. Do you really need it? You know what you have to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars great in parts, needs some proof reading...
Reviewed in Germany on March 3, 2014
I really like the honesty in James Altucher's writing. He is one of the few writers these days who is truly speaking his mind. However, it still needs some significant proof reading, as there are simply too many typos. I think a couple passes by friends would be enough.
