    LG 27UN850-W VS. Dell U2720Q
    5 Stars
    LG 27UN850-W VS. Dell U2720Q
I have four 4K monitors:LG 27UN850-W X2, one desk dual monitor setup (will be referred below as LG)Dell U2720Q X2, one desk dual monitor setup (will be referred below as Dell)I use LG, my spouse uses Dell.In my mind LG is better to fit my needs. From my spouse's point of view, Dell is preferred over LG.1. Why does LG better fit my needs?a) both LG and Dell have anti-glare screens. But I found Dell reflects a little bit more than LG. I have a “designer white” desk. Dell’s reflection is noticeable especially during the evening when using the desk lamp and watching videos. On the other hand, LG does not distract my attention due to glare. The Dell glare issue could be a combination of my desk color and light source setup. But given the exact same setup, LG does not distract my attention due to reflection.b) LG has ports arrangement on the back, rather than at the bottom. I’d like to try different gadgets during the past weeks. The LG’s design makes it super convenient to plug/unplug cables, firetv stickers. Dell’s traditional port design also works well thanks to the best ergonomics stands (will come to it later). Adding devices/cable to Dell just by simply rotating the screen.c) LG has a user-friendly screen control joystick. Dell’s traditional button is not comparable. Again, because I’d like to change settings, and try different gadgets.2. Why does Dell better fit my spouse's needs?Ergonomics, ergonomics, ergonomics! My spouse needs ergonomic monitor stands. Dell’s design fits the bill perfectly. A complete freedom of adjustment with extremely wide ranges, at any direction.3. What do the two monitors share in common? They are all very good monitors for regular day to day work/entertainment. Again we are not professional graphic designers nor video editors. For average users like us, you cannot go wrong with either LG/Dell. For most of the time, all our monitors work in reader/office/text mode. When it comes to entertainment, LG/Dell, for me, do not make much difference. I cannot tell the difference when watching videos or playing games, or editing family photos. They look pretty much the same for casual entertainment. I also placed the LG/Dell side by side, playing the same youtube 4K HDR videos with all monitors in full HDR settings, but I cannot tell which is better. They all calibrated to their own standards. In their own “reference frame”, they all look very beautiful.Btw, isn’t the best entertainment to find a job to do what you like? The office/text mode might be the best entertainment mode for me :-)Finally, because this is my serious review under this LG product tag. I will add 3 more points for LG only:1. LG has a bulky voltage transformer shown in the picture. The power cable on each side of the voltage transformer is about 55 inch (total about 110 inch including the transformer in the middle), long enough for any home office setup. However, for a standing desk, I have to spend a bit extra effort to hide the bulky transformer in the cable management tray.2. One of the LG monitors has a very tiny issue with the stand. I returned it and bought a new one. The problem went away.3. LG has a builtin speaker that can be easily used with fireTV stick 4K, just plug and play. If I want to control volume, I’m using the LG monitor joystick, or a separate speaker or a bluetooth (Jabra evolve 75), where output device with builtin volume controls. The joystick also makes the hdmi input switch very easy, fireTV to Nvidia Quadro, very smooth joystick operation. But better to get a 4K HDMI switch.

Was using Dell u2415 that seemed pretty good for the new Mac mini (8/256) I just got, using HDMI. Dell screen had a few areas that were getting image burn or something, so searched for 27 in 4k replacement. Biggest question was would I notice a significant difference if did get a 4k, well the answer is yes. I got 27UN850-W since I don't need 90w or 60w charging. Not a gamer, not a photo proofer, not a content creator. This screen is really nice, the text is much sharper and clearer, and my eye are not bugged out after extended viewing like they were on the Dell. Cost an issue, oh yeah, the apple display was not happening. Really anything over $400 wasn't happening. Do I need a USB hub, no or ethernet in the monitor-no. Ran the included USB-C cord from the Macmini to the LG screen turned everything on and wow how nice the screen looked. It shows up in system as LG HDR 4K with color profile LG HDR 4K 60hz. It looks super excellent to me. Did try changing the resolution to I guess it was true 4K and everything was sharper, but needed a magnifying glass to read it, so I went back to that original setting as it was perfect. Looking in Hardware Graphics/Displays this is what my Mac was reporting: LG HDR 4K:
    Resolution: 3840 x 2160 (2160p/4K UHD 1 - Ultra High Definition)
    UI Looks like: 1920 x 1080 @ 60.00Hz
It is silent just like the Macmini. Still quick and snappy. My windows machine has W11 and attach it via HDMI. The joystick control on the LG makes it easy to select what input to display and I had to play with that because it defaulted to some high resolution with 30hz! Everything was really choppy, got it set to a lower resolution at 60hz. This screen will go to sleep with the Mac, and wakes up fast no issue. The included speakers are set with Maxx sound on-which is an attempt to make them sound better-and they do get quite loud, but they are small monitor speakers, and would only be good for voice. At low volume levels music would probably be ok, but I am not using them, and using a bluetooth speaker for way better sound. Stand is stable for me, really easy to put together and get going. The power brick is hidden under desk, not a big deal that it is a small block, cord is plenty long. Well packaged. LG delivered a very nice screen for the money with this one. Super happy that it was plug and play with the Mac, and operates correctly with the Mac. It's a keeper for me.

Update April 26 2024---------------- Quick update after using it daily for the last 6 months. No change in opinion, no buyers remorse, no screen issues, still easy on my 60+yr old eyes. Sometimes when reading text I really notice the detail and sharpness and get that happy feeling.

I performed weeks of research before committing to the 27UQ850-W. While no monitor is perfect, this is likely the best Apple 5K replacement under the $800 price point. I use Apple machines for just about everything except gaming: productivity, software development, creative workflows like photo editing and recording audio, and watching videos. I have a 2019 Macbook Pro 16 i9 (Intel) and another 2021 Macbook Pro 16 M1 Max. Both machines are working great with this monitor.

    Connectivity
    ---------------
DisplayPort and USB-C ports work fine. I can't tell any quality difference between them. My regular setup uses the DP port connected to CalDigit TS4 dock. Cables provided by LG are long enough to reach the TS4, but users with a machine farther away might need slightly longer cables. I haven't tried the HDMI port because a lot of people report Apple issues with HDMI on M1-based machines.

This monitor does not support daisy chaining or Thunderbolt.

    Resolution and Overall Visual Experience
    ------------------------------------------------
My biggest concern was how Apple-native 2560 x 1440 ("WQHD") output would look when rendered on a 4K display. I write a ton of code and need text to look really sharp. I read all I could find about this subject and took a field trip to the Apple Store to evaluate the 5K display where the situation is perfectly ideal: 2560 x 1440 logical pixels get rendered onto a 5120 x 2880 display yielding an exact 2X scale factor in each axis. The results are super sharp text and smooth visuals for both content and UI elements -- part of the Retina brand.

Here's the thing some readers may wish to know. On a 27" display WQHD output does in fact look best from a text size and UI perspective, at least on Mac. Changing to resolutions other than 2560 x 1440 result in an experience that is less satisfactory. Imagine my surprise when, for WQHD output, text looked 85-90% as crisp as the Apple 5K. I sit between 26" and 32" away from this monitor. At this viewing distance I don't struggle to read anything. Everything is clear. I am confident WQHD output on WQHD-native displays will look much worse despite a perfect 1:1 pixel mapping. I also think WQHD content will look better on a 27" 4K than a 32" 4K due to higher PPI on the smaller display.

As to the alleged performance hit Mac machines take while downscaling to non-native resolutions like WQHD, here is my experience. Macbook Pro M1 Max doesn't even blink. There is no observable difference in terms of heat, CPU, or anything else. By contrast the 2019 Intel Macbook Pro i9 runs hotter by 10-15 deg C. The fans run constantly above 2500 rpm. One Youtube user reported slowdowns on Apple hardware while connected to a 4K monitor and rendering scenes in Blender. I can see where this might be an issue for specific Apple machines and/or apps, but I suspect they are edge cases the average user won't run into.

This monitor has nice saturation and overall color balance. I'm no colorist but the display just looks really, really good. I tried toggling HDR in Apple settings under display but couldn't discern any observable difference.

    Interoperability With USB-C Docks
    ----------------------------------------
I have accessories like monitor and audio interface connected through a CalDigit TS4 dock. This LG has no problems through it either. Both Macbook Pro machines remember display arrangements and resolutions that were previously selected. I haven't observed power management related snafus as some people report, but I disabled power management while on A/C power.

    Brightness
    -------------
Going back to the priority for text legibility, I traditionally used extra brightness to enhance contrast and make reading easier on my eyes. I leave this monitor at 100% brightness, but I could probably go down to 85% before it would start to feel dim. Brightly lit rooms probably afford many fewer options unless one agrees to pay the Apple tax for the ultra-bright 5K.

    Build quality
    ---------------
Build quality is okay. It looks like the cheap plastic that it is, though I like the narrow bezel all the way around the front. I haven't tried out audio because I use studio monitors instead.

The monitor does not include a camera.

In closing I think this is a fantastic monitor -- probably the best I've bought. Gamers and ultra discriminating users who need the very best probably won't be happy with it. For the rest of us it's a nice offering from LG that shows how far IPS panel technology has progressed in recent years.

After getting a similar priced monitor on Amazon and being horribly underwhelmed by that monitor's capabilities, I saw this monitor was discounted to the same price so I bought it on the strength of the specs and reviews. So glad I did. In every way this monitor is superior to the other monitor I purchased. The audio output from the other monitor was worse than AM radio through blown speakers, it was that bad. This monitor's speakers, while not high-fidelity, are decent for every-day or home office usage. More importantly the menu system is great, the image quality and panel are really impressive. And that it has USB-C PD capability (65 watts?) and works flawlessly with my M1 MacBook Pro, I give it a high recommendation.

I'm generally happy with this monitor. I've always used Apple monitors but this is a more affordable option and still looks great. But every so often and quite randomly the screen goes to black for a second and then looks fine like nothing happened. I'm not sure why... it hasn't happened enough for me to return it, and assorted forums say that I'm not the only one experiencing this. But it is rare... like every 3-4 weeks or so, for no apparent reason, for just a second. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it.

Gaming should be fine. Also, what’s with the huge power brick? It’s over 7 inches long! Was the designer compensating?

Generally speaking, the shipment is very fast, and it is easy to set up.
I expect the power plug is compatible with Singapore because the product was purchase from Amazon. sg.
And I also spent some time finding the OK button for the OSD setup, the button is well-designed, but it is not visible to the user.
    Overall, the experience is good.
