Product Description
Many say the LCD-X is the most neutral of the LCD Collection; they’re used by sound engineers and musicians to create the most accurate recordings. Just Google Manny Marroquin, Stuart Hawkes, Frank Filipetti, Ed Cherney, George Massenburg, Elliot Scheiner, or Brent Burge for a few examples of our Audeze users. They do a great job of translating your mix to the real world. The X and the closed-back XC are sensitive enough to be driven directly by portable players like iPods, iPhones, and some of the better smartphones, but you’ll enjoy better sound with an external amplifier. Its impedance is 20 ohms.
Audeze LCD-X Planar Magnetic Headphones with Leather Earpads
ABOUT AUDEZE
Audeze started in 2008 in a garage (of course!) when its founders came across a revolutionary flexible circuit material developed for NASA. Realizing this could be a great advance in planar magnetic technology, they first started to make pro audio PA speakers, but dropped this project and started making headphones – the LCD-1.
Taking this first headphone to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, it was a tremendous hit, and that success launched the company. Hanging on that garage wall was the 2001 Space Odyssey poster, and that inspired the company’s name. The founders wanted a name that had something to do with a “journey through audio,” so Odyssey would be perfect, and that’s how the name Audeze (pronounced “odyssey”) was born.
AUDEZE'S PLANAR MAGNETIC TECHNOLOGY
Acoustically engineered for accuracy
Audeze’s innovative planar magnetic technology delivers clear and accurate sound that reveals everything on the recording.
Diaphragms thinner than a human hair
We use space-age materials in an ultra thin diaphragm four times larger than typical headphones for fast response times, dramatically reduced distortion, higher resolution and improved imaging.
Near zero distortion
Double-sided magnet arrays delivers a uniform driving force across the entire diaphragm for near zero distortion.
Internal waveguide
Patented Fazor Elements guide internal headphone soundwaves to avoid resonances for a more accurate waveform.

One that helps make distinctions between these and other choices.
I don’t know what you’d call me...audiophile, music enthusiast...whatever. I LOVE music; I listen to many genres; I know ENOUGH audiophile talk to help differentiate a little.
I was looking for a “destination” headphone, a pair that means I’m done in terms of money but also the sound I was searching for. I tested phones for years. I own Senns (Momentum and HD 700), some Audio-Technica (ATH-50 in White), Shure 535 IEMs, and a pair of wireless V-Modas that I carry around in my briefcase.
So in making this decision, there were a couple considerations. First, I did not want to spend a lot more money on downstream components. I own a Schiit Magma amp I use with my HD700s, but if that wasn’t good enough or didn’t sound right, too bad.
So that lead me to considering some amazing flagship brand cans that have lower impedance. For those who don’t know (if you’re looking at these Audeze cans, I’m sure you do), impedance is measured in Ohms. It measures how much power it takes to move headphone drivers. Low impedance, easier to move, with higher impedance phones you definitely want to consider an amp unless you don’t care about not achieving a nice solid volume. And then I broke that rule. I decided to buy a Dragonfly Red after reading so many amazing reviews about it. The Dragonfly functions as a DAC and amp. I’m sure it’s not strong enough to power something hungry like the flagship Beyerdynamic cans which I think top out at 700 ohms. But for my purposes, it would have to do.
In contention for purchase were the Audeze LCD2C, the Audeze LCDX, the Hifiman Edition X V2, and the incredibly famous Sennheiser 800HD (which is now more “affordable” because of the release of the 800 S). Two of these phones feature planar magnetic drivers (Audeze and Hifiman) and the Senns are traditional dynamic.
In short, The Audeze LCDX is the best sounding headphone I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to.
To me, they sound much better than the LCD2C. The X captures mids and highs much more crisply than the LCD2s. Like most planar magnetic cans, these babies NAIL bass and low end. It’s not overwhelming, and they don't sound like Beats.
You just have to hear them to understand. I’ve never heard drums sound so incredibly tight and thick. Even LIVE. These phones make you want to go listen to your entire music collection again. Here’s another word to the non-snooty audiophile: I’m listening to music on my iPad through Spotify. I’ve tried listening to lossless music on many occasions, not just through Tidal but also on a friend’s super fancy hifi system. To THESE ears, while running a pair of great cans with appropriate amp support (in this case, the Dragonfly Red), the music sounded almost identical. What can I tell you? I’m sure people will say I’m an auditory dilettante.
A word on comfort and build. Much has been written about how big and heavy these are. They ARE big and heavy. This is an instance where aesthetics match sound. The music you get from these is animal thick. That’s what they look like. Beasts.
With regard to comfort: I can wear these for hours quite comfortably. I’ve NEVER had to take them off from fatigue. No, they don’t become “invisible” like the Sennheiser 800s, but that’s a trade I’ll make.
Comparisons: If what you’re looking for PRIMARILY is a huge soundstage, the Hifiman Edition X or the Sennheiser 800 might be a better match for you. I’d rank the contenders here: Audeze LCDX, Hifiman Edition X, Audeze LCD2C, Sennheiser 800. Now, it’s important to admit that I don’t believe I was getting even CLOSE to what the 800s could do without using a much better amp. But connected to my Magma, they were VERY nice, as all the phones I tried were. The deal breaker for me was that all the other phones, with the exception of the Audeze LCD2C were beautiful, crystalline, and pure. BUT, I found them all to be too polite, TOO Invisible. If I’m paying this much for headphones, I want to say “WOW!!!!” when I put them on. The HEX came closest, but even they fell short.
These do almost everything perfectly; they sound MAJESTIC, they are comfortable, and they are built like a tank.
As I write this, I'm using a standard Yamaha amp that also powers my speakers. The headphone output on that Yamaha is then routed to a cheap headphone amp. Even with this very low end setup, they sound fantastic. I purchased a proper headphone amp (Fostex - HP-A4BL) that will be here tomorrow, so I might update the review when that arrives. Again, even when connected to the cheaper equipment (worth less combined than the Fostex amp), it's an experience.
First off, for you bass heads - there's bass. Plenty of it. Seriously, this thing can KICK. Even when it's kicking, though, you can still hear the music. At higher volumes, it just keeps kicking, more and more. I own a pair of on-ear solo beats. The beats are designed to drown you in bass, but the LCD-X's give them a run for their money, let me tell you. The lows can get very low, and the mids can really give you a nice punch. Super crisp bass.
Even with all that bass, though, other instruments are always well represented. The best way I can describe it is if you had a set of speakers and a sub next to your ears, it'd sound like these headphones. It's like listening to your loudspeaker setup, up close and personal.
I wasn't sure I'd like open back cans, but after hearing these, I'm sold. I've always had closed back headphones, but the LCD-X's really sound as if you're "in" the music. It's more of an experience than simply "listening to music". I find that I'm now hearing instruments I never knew were there.
Now for the bad - the comfort. These things are heavy. VERY heavy. You'd think the top of your head would get the most punishment here, but that doesn't seem to be the case, at least for me. The sides of my head are where it starts to hurt after about an hour of listening. The ear cups will push against your head quite a bit, but it's not terrible. The ear cups are very plush. After awhile, you just have to remove the headphones and give you head a break. For comparison, I can wear my beats all day and not notice they're even on my head. But hey, that's what you get with cans that are built like a tank. I'd give these things one less star just for the weight and comfort issues, but the sound is just THAT worth it.
If you have the opportunity to listen to these at music store, do it. If you're on the fence about buying them, do it. If they're not your cup of tea, just return them. That said, I doubt anyone who buys these things will be returning them.
Granting, not all are willing to spend this much on headphones for leisure listening, but if you work a lot and use music as a de-stressor like me; these are worth the investment!
These headphones push out sound flawlessly and faultessly! Every detail the track can dish out is there for the listener to critique and enjoy! In tracks like Earth, Wind and Fire's September; you'd hear all of the instruments in great detail and separation! On Diana Krall's S 'Wonderful you can hear the wetness of her mouth (dare i call it saliva clicks) as she sings intimately unto your ears! In Blue Swede's Hooked on a Feeling, I can distinguish how many are singing the "oogah chakas";( theres four! ). The sound feels large! It feels like listening to speakers! The bass is deep and well detailed and extended. It doesnt just sound like a thump.. but more of a thunderous growl; with more meat and detail! The mids and vocals are intimate; they sound huge and more forward. And the highs sound angelic and detailed but pulled back enough as to not sound fatiguing!
These are the perfect headphones in my honest opinion. Ive sold off so many of my old ones after getting these and only kept those that had sentimental value to me.
These are 20 ohm headphones, and can be enjoyed straight from a phone without an amp or DAC. However it can still benefit from them if you really wanna flesh out its full potential! Im using the Fiio e10K for mobile, and a Schiit Modi/Loki/Magni stack on my desktop!

Der liegt gut, hat einen Wahnsinns-Sound. Ich nutze den primär für Videokonferenzen und zum mixen und aufnehmen. Uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen.
