Art of the Chase Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 92 ratings

When a notorious art thief surfaces, warring detective exes reunite for the hunt. A second-chance lesbian romantic suspense that fuses the fine line between love and hate.

Six years ago, the “Fabulous Gustave” slipped the grasp of Agent Fleur van Beekhof, making off with a priceless artwork…and Fleur’s beautifully ordered life. Suddenly the cool, pragmatic Europol detective lost her detective partner and wife, her rising career, and her control, thanks to the addictive lure of cards.

When a new Italian art theft bears all the markings of Gustave’s taunting style, Fleur is put back in the field, because no one knows him better. She jumps at the chance to correct the mistake that ruined her life. The hitch? She has to work with her fiery ex-wife.

Where Fleur is by the book, Renata skirts the rules, leaps into danger, and looks frustratingly hot while doing it.

As Fleur and Renata chase flamboyant Gustave around Europe, will their case push them back into each other’s arms, or shatter what’s left of Fleur’s heart?

Jen Giacalone is a former rock star, a graphic artist, a parent, a baker, amateur plumber and a timelord. She toured much of the east coast of the U.S. as a musician in her 20s, spent her 30s in corporate boardrooms of fortune 500 companies as a graphic artist, and in her 40s, became a published author.

She's the author of the novel "Loud Pipes Save Lives," published by Carnation Books, about a damaged detective pursuing a gang of vigilante lady bikers, and the current romantic suspense, "Art of the Chase," a tale of a divorced detective couple thrown back together to pursue a notorious art thief who has come out of retirement. She writes whenever she can and when she can't, she's thinking about writing: novels, screenplays, poetry with clever heroines, ill-advised romance, arts, and usually some weaponry.

I liked this one a LOT! Interesting main characters. Fleur was on a personal journey I’ve never seen depicted before in sapphic fiction. In her professional life as an Europol detective she was brilliant and well respected, though still dealing with the fallout from a decision made on the job that still haunts her.

Loved the dynamic between her and fellow investigator and ex-wife Renata - also at the top of her game. The two of them together were powerhouses and the interaction between them was so much fun to watch! And their chemistry! OOF!

Just an all-around enjoyable and entertaining read! I definitely recommend it.

This book harkens back to the Thomas Crown Affair, with a little James Bond and more recent Oceans movies.. combining art history with intrigue, travel from Amsterdam to Paris, Monaco, Italy.. chasing various culprits including Russian mafia and wealthy gamblers.. all with a love story interwoven.. it’s like the tiramisu of stories.. a bunch of good things all mixed together resulting in something amazing

Fun read with witty dialogue and a few twists. I also like books on unique topics and know nothing about art.

This book has everything, intrigue, suspense, thrills, beautiful character development and of course, romance! The story of Fleur and Renata is enticing, at times heart wrenching and believable.
The author does an amazing job of unpacking their relationship and the events that led to it. She leads us on a chase through Europe as they join forces to catch a long time foe, and art thief whose case contributed to the demise of their marriage six years earlier. The description of the places and scenery allow the reader to be enveloped in the moment fully.
One of the best I have read this year.

An art thief returns and the two women who almost caught him are reunited. A mystery adventure and love story that spans Europe. A chase that leaps from country to country and brings the two women closer to forgiveness and reconciliation. Great read.

This fast-paced Sapphic action-romance novel is a delight to read. There's plenty of passion and steaminess between the protagonist and her ex-wife in addition to sleuthing in gorgeously described European cities. It's a fun bit of romantic escapism.

This isn't the type of book I usually pick up, but I'm glad I did. The characters are strong but flawed in realistic ways, and the mystery is engaging. Yes, there's glam and glitz that reminded me a touch of Bond films, but what I like is that this book didn't lose its cheekiness or its focus on the barriers we humans put in our way, especially where love is concerned.

Rating: 4.25/5 Stars (rounded down)
Quick Reasons: queer, diverse romance; quick-witted humor; believable character arcs; a true redemption romance; a different kind of detective story; entertaining and fast-paced read

This was SUCH a fun foray out of my comfort zone, Penguins, and I am SO glad that Jennifer Giacalone put this book in front of me for reading! This is an entertaining, fast-paced race to figure out who-dun-it...but with ART thievery! I feel like, 5 years down the road, I might find myself picking up detective books MORE often...and it will be all thanks to this book falling into my lap at just the right time. On top of the drama, the intrigue, the mystery and the SNARK (because what's a book to this readerly Penguin without a lot of sass?), this is ALSO an LGBT diverse read and I am HERE. FOR. ALL. OF. IT!

The character redemption arcs are believably written and heart-wrenchingly natural to read. The struggles with humanity, addiction, and the heart plucked just the right amount of strings to keep readers both immersed AND hanging on, bated breath, waiting for the forgiveness...or for the fall. All the while, our pair of Art Detectives (honestly, while I SHOULD have known that was probably a thing, I had never thought about it BEING a thing before this book) are on the hunt and casing the chase...and tossing snark at each other like it's going out of style.

I definitely recommend this to lovers of who-dun-it mysteries, LGBTQ+ readers, and those looking to embark on new adventures/try something out of their comfort zone. Jennifer Giacalone will keep you guessing, enmeshed in the finer details of the case and the heart, and flipping pages as if you're drowning with this entertaining read. The chase is afoot, Penguins...are YOU ready to check the clues and find your answer?

This was so much fun. IMHO, the plot was well developed and I really didn't see it coming. I loved the MC too, their animosity before reconnecting and the banter were so satisfying and their understanding of each other even though everything would be leading them to some other conclusion. Sweeeet.

Easy pick

Here we have two strong women trying to solve the theft of a large art work involving the return of a clever art thief, the same thief who had escaped their capture years earlier. Stir in the women’s acrimonious breakup, their failings, problems and misconceptions and you have a pretty enjoyable read. This is thrilling, fast-paced entertainment that will have you casting the characters for the movie version.

Really different type of story to what I normally read. You know what though, it’s great. I wasn’t sure about the MC’s at first but after a few chapters I got them. From that point on the story got better.
Follow the two ex-wives around Europe in the hunt of art thieves and love. A few twists and turns along the way but ultimately you get an exciting second chance romance with a hit of culture thrown in.
