Great little workhorse!
5 Stars
Great little workhorse!
I’ve had this tiller/cultivator for 6 years and it’s been very reliable. I’ve used it for gardening and also just to turn up soil. My latest project involves replacing my lawn with artificial grass. Although we had a ton of rain last season the drought in California is still evident in the rock hard ground. I actually broke a tine off the tiller when doing the first side. She kept on going with no hesitation. By the time I got to the other side the ground was even harder. Sadly the old girl couldn’t handle it and the plug fried.6 years of solid use makes this a must buy on my list. Works better than larger tillers I’ve owned. And it’s so lightweight I can pick it up with one hand!

Initial Review (Will Follow Up if Necessary)

I skeptically purchased this because a) I live in an area with very thick clay, actually the hardest/thickest clay I've ever encountered. I moved in about a year ago and after, literally, days of going at various parts of the yard with a pick ax and mattock, my back and shoulders told me that there is no way I'm going to do it again. b) it was electric and I just don't have a whole lot of faith in the power of electric tools versus gas powered tools.

I simply couldn't afford to buy a gas one and I figured with the size of our yard and how much work I have planned, renting was just not economically feasible... so for under $100, I figured I might as well give this a shot.

Received this this afternoon. Assembly was relatively painless -- took less than 20 minutes to assemble, only tool needed is a Phillips head screwdriver to attach wheels and control handle -- the bolts for the handle are done by hand. The motor, handle, tines, and most of the motor is metal, the wheels are plastic, as are the control handle and sheath that goes over the motor.

It was late in the afternoon I just wanted to try it out for a few minutes. In 15 minutes, I basically tilled an area of my yard that probably would have taken at least 6-8 of continuous hours of intensive hand labor to do (about 7-10 square yards with some vegetation). It was quiet; I forgot it was around 7 and even so, I don't think it generated enough noise to be heard by my neighbors. Handling was easy, though it will run away from you if it gets stuck on roots/stumps -- it might be a good idea to keep a mattock ready for that sort of thing. Since I've only used it for 15 or so minutes, I can't say how well it would handle larger jobs, but I think it will make short order of small yards.

As with any tiller, it throws up a lot of dust/dirt -- I'd recommend a mask and/or goggles when using. It will automatically power off if you lose your grip on it -- it did bounce a bit when it unexpectedly hit a relatively large root from a shrub (about 1 1/2 - 2" thick).

So at this point, I give it a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars; since it exceeded my expectations, I gave it a full 5 stars.

PROS:
- Easy to Assemble
- Powerful enough for clay
- Much Quieter than a gas-powered tiller; From operating distance, I estimate it is about as loud as a standard household blender
- Inexpensive, very good value

CONS:
- The serious only thing I can think of is the obvious -- it's electric, so you're hassled with a carrying an extension cord.
- Okay, maybe the construction, the amount of plastic doesn't elicit any feelings of durability. The sheathing isn't a big deal, but I think the wheels, if used regularly, will be the first thing to go -- but I think they'd be easy to replace.
- Maybe size -- it's not particularly large, but it would be nice if it folded down for easy storage. Not a big deal, easily remedied by loosening the bolts.

Recommended for Weekend Yard Warriors that are just to old/lazy to deal with hacking away aimlessly at soil -- probably not adequate for a HUGE jobs, but your typical residential garden/yard job should be just fine.

-- Minor Update 4/30/2014
Used it to till about 500 sq ft. of St. Augustine in clay and another 500 sq ft. of soil that had weed barrier fabric underneath it -- the machine had little problem going through it -- took about 10 minutes. The St. Augustine runners and barrier material got tangled in the tines, so I can see how people who are complaining about this would complain -- however, it literally took me about 30 seconds to tear it out with a utility knife. It was wound up in the tines pretty bad -- but I think if you continue using it to the point that the motor shuts down, then you might want to reconsider your approach. Again, with a utility knife/box cutter, you can probably tear out whatever gets wound up in those tines in a matter of seconds.

I also noticed that if you do not have the control lever on the handle down all the way, and I mean, ALL THE WAY... it will not turn on. I fiddled with it when I first started using it trying to figure out why it didn't turn on. So that's something to consider in troubleshooting start up problems.

-- Minor Update 7/11/2014
Still love this machine. I've used it pretty much every other weekend. The only problem I've experienced thus far is that the bolts that hold the handle to the machine came loose and were lost when I was tilling about a month ago. I had to replace them with standard bolts from the local hardware store. No problem, just a standard maintenance issue. I would recommend checking them after every use to make sure they don't vibrate loose. I'll stick by the comment from the previous update -- keep a utility knife handy and the problem with roots, limbs, and grass getting tangled in the tines will never be a real problem. Honestly, I don't think I spent more than a minute ripping those things out and I've gotten it pretty tangled whilst tearing up some st. augustine and ground cover in heavy clay.

-- Minor Update -- The year in review
I have used this tiller several times over the past year, and I have to say that it has be indispensable for all of my yard work. I even used it to till up some soil around fence posts that I was replacing to make it easier for their removal. I've probably put a good 15-20 hours of work into the machine with no breakdowns. Roots, grass, and large weed-y vines are a problem, getting stuck in the tines, but using a standard utility blade and scissors, I can usually free them up in less than 5 minutes. It would be nice if the tines were removable to make this process easier, but it's truly not a real problem -- if it is, you might want to consider going at the soil with a mattock for a few minutes to break up the vegetation.

The soil in the area where I live is thick clay (it's as bad, if not worse than modeling clay). I've had better luck with the machine, at least in terms of comfort, if the soil is slightly dampened -- it might jump around a little bit if it's dried out clay, like you see in August -- a few minutes with a hose solves that problem. I typically use this in conjuction with the Flowtron LE-900 Leaf Mulcher (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006XMTM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) -- I work in the mulched dried clippings into the soil to help break up the clay and add a little better drainage.

Overall, still very happy with this machine, and stand by the 5-star review after a year of use.

~2 year update 4/9/2014
I am in the process of removing about 3" off of 500 sq ft of compacted clay, grading, and trenching for a french drain and rock garden. Again, this little machine just tore through it like butter. I had to replace the nuts and bolts that hold the armature/controls due to wear, vibration, and corrosion, but the Earthwise tiller continues to deliver; without it, this job would be impossible to do by hand and the cost to rent one from homedepot for a day was not much cheaper than what I paid for it. It continues to be my go-to tool for tilling and I still highly recommend it.

~4 year update 2/27/2017
I finally did it. I finally killed it. It is not the tiller's fault. I've been a really bad, abusive, and lazy owner.
I practically put this little tiller through hell. I do not know how many cubic yards of hard Texas clay I put this tiller through, but I live on a fairly large residential lot and I've use it in pretty much every gardening and landscaping project that I've done over the past 4 years. Last weekend, I tilled a big portion of my backyard down about 5" -- at least 3000 sq feet when I ran over a brick -- the power of the tiller got it jammed in the tines....and entire brick...jammed...in the tines.... I got it out with the use of a mallet and I bent the tines back in shape using a pair of pliers. I thought all was well when this past weekend, in the process of tilling an area to make a trench where I was planting hedges, it just made the worst grinding sound.

Again, I will not place any blame on this tiller. I did pretty much everything possible to make sure that it would die. I let it out in the rain, ran through roots until it wouldn't turn any more. I hit concrete almost every time. I just wanted to test it to its limits. The machine served dutifully until the end and I will be purchasing a second one (and promise to take better care of it). It's that good.

Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2011
I purchased this tiller a little over a month ago for my small, 16 ft. x 16 ft. vegetable garden. I waited until now to write my review because I wanted to have a really good "feel" for the product before I posted my thoughts.

I had already turned the ground in my garden, which had been lawn area for years, with a garden fork; but the thick grass and roots would not allow the ground to loosen and break up. I ended up with a 16 x 16 patch of grassy clumps that I couldn't rake or plant. To break up the clumps I tried various cultivators: A garden weasel ended up all tangled with grass and roots and wouldn't turn. My Garden Claw just loaded up with the grassy clumps. I even tried sharpening my hoe and using it to hack at the clumps to break them up--a very labor intense and slow process. I was at my wits end. I began to realize that the only way I was going to be able to loosen the soil effectively was going to be with a roto-tiller. I figured I'd need to rent one at a local rental center, but when I learned it was going to cost me $80.00 for a half day, I started looking for other alternatives.

I came across this Earthwise TC70001 11-Inch 8-1/2 Amp Electric Tiller/Cultivator at Amazon.com. The first thing that caught my eye was that all but one of the reviews were 5-stars, and the only one that wasn't at that time was 4-stars. If not for that, I don't think I would have given this machine a second look. And even then, after reading all the reviews, I still doubted that a light-weight electric roto-tiller could have enough power to do what I needed it to do. But I figured, what did I have to lose? Even if it didn't work for breaking up the clumps this year, I'd still be able to use the machine to till the garden in future years after the soil had been prepared the first time. So I decided to give it a try.

BOY, AM I GLAD I DID!

In a word, this thing is FANTASTIC! First of all, I was amazed at the power it has. It effortlessly churned out rocks bigger than my fist. Needless to say, it chewed through the grass clumps and roots with ease. I did stop a few times to untangle debris from the tines, but it was easy to remove and in just a few minutes I'd be up and running again. The power is more than adequate. It digs through the soil, even Michigan clay, without bogging down, leaving a loose, mealy planting bed in its wake. I tilled the entire garden twice--first north and south; then east and west. The whole job took about 3 hours. I've since used the tiller in other areas of my yard like flower beds and areas of the lawn that needed leveling. I am truly impressed with the results.

The main drawback that I see is the machine's light weight. When it hits something solid in the ground, like a root or large rock, it wants to jump and buck like a rodeo bull. You just need to be ready for it when it happens. Overall, though, it is very easy to control.

For just about 50% more than the cost of renting one of those gas monsters at our local rental center for a half-day, I was able to purchase this tiller that I will be able to use for many years to come; not only in my vegetable garden, but my flower beds as well. Quite honestly, I don't think I've ever been more satisfied with a purchase. I wish I could give this thing more than 5 stars! (Of course, the service I got from Amazon.com (including the free shipping) was impeccable as always.)

PROs:
1. High amperage - this translates to High Power. More than enough power for a small tiller.
2. Low cost - makes this tiller a tremendous value.
3. Well made.
4. Simple to use.

CONs:
1. Light weight - so if you hit something solid in the ground, like a large root or rock, the machine tends to jump violently. Not a huge disadvantage, however, as long as you are aware of this tendency and pay attention.
2. Narrow width - limits the effective usage of this tiller to smaller gardens. But this can also be an advantage--you can easily use this machine to till between rows in your garden and other narrow areas where a larger tiller won't fit.

Michel F
5.0 out of 5 stars excellent machine for small gardens
Reviewed in Canada on May 8, 2021
I bought this tiller mainly because it was inexpensive and the reviews were good. I was slightly worried that it would not be powerful enough to get rid of all the fine roots and packed dirt in my garden. It worked much better than expected. I usually turn the earth by hand in my small garden and it can take me between 45 to more than 60 minutes. It took 10 minutes to do 2 passes with this tiller and it did a much more thorough job than I could ever do by hand. It is powerful, quiet and light. The handle on top of the motor makes it a breeze to carry around. It was also easy to assemble. Dealing with an electric cord attached is not that bad but be careful because the machine pulls strongly forward when you pull the handle.

My garden is only about 100 ft/square. I would still use this tiller for a garden up to about 200 ft/square. Passed that, I would rather have a wider machine. I'd like to find one negative with this tiller but so far I can't. It exceeded all my expectations. The motor part seems very solid compared to the slightly flimsy handle assembly but at this price, I think this is as good as it is going to get. For a machine that I'm going to use once a year, this is more than I really need.

4.0 out of 5 stars but I found it would dig in by itself better if you pull it instead of push it

I was surprised such a little unit worked as well as it did. Used it to prep the back yard for seeding after a septic replacement, tilled an area about 30' x 120'. It has plenty of power (make sure to use a 12 gauge power cord) and didn't get overloaded. The soil was full of rocks the size of large potatoes and bigger, was worried it would damage the gears or the tines but it usually just brought the rocks to the surface and then went on. Did bend one of the tines once on a large rock slab but straitened it with vice-grips OK. It is a light unit so it tends to skip along the surface of hard packed soil without digging in unless you lean on it some, but I found it would dig in by itself better if you pull it instead of push it. The only problem I have with it is the safety button, which you have to reach over with your left hand to the right side of the handle to start. Taking your hand off like this means you don't have good control when it starts and it tends to jump around, a bad design. I got around it by using a 3" C-clamp to keep the button permanently depressed, maybe later I will find a more elegant fix. Since the unit cost less than renting a tiller for a few days it was a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly amazing little machine!

I originally purchased this tiller for a new vegetable garden. I was starting from scratch and needed to till last years grass and weeds to create the vegetable garden. It did a terrific job for such a small machine. I admit it did have difficulty when the ground was wet, directly after a rain, but after a couple of days drying time, it easily went right to work! I took my time and it tilled several inches deep. I tilled it several times in different directions as my soil has clay and I mixed in both peat and compost. I was only able to do about 20 minutes at a time as I have arthritis and carpal tunnel in both arms which was aggravated by the vibration however it still did the job amazingly well. Nothing seemed to slow it down! I then tackled my new flower garden which is about 30 ft x 50 ft. This took several days for me to accomplish and it easily chewed through grass, clay, shrub roots and even some large tree roots buried in the soil. I am totally impressed by this machine as are all my neighbours who watched the progress. It was well worth every dollar of its cost, especially as renting a larger tiller ranges from 80 - 100 per day in my area.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have had this little cultivator for about 5 years now.

My little tiller/cultivator is the best one I've ever seen for my little garden. (It is my 2nd in 11 years and not a single problem.) It is a tough little machine which does the job. My last tiller, my husband had to replace the tines quite often. Finally the tines could no longer be found. This one - nope. It just chews and chews up the dirt. A big rock can stop it, but that happens with all tillers. It throws out small rocks with ease and just carries on. I clean it after I use it and put it away for another season. My garden patch is about 12' x 24'. (It expands a bit every year.) This little guy makes tilling a pleasure. I can't think of anything I would change on it. You have to be careful, as with any electrical machine, not to let the power cord come in contact with the tiller blades. I love my little tiller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little beast with attitude!

I was beating myself up trying to decide whether to purchase this tiller or the Mantis on sale for $249 at the local TSC. I stuck with this one - partially because I already ordered it before I saw the sale flyer at TSC,partially because it was $100 cheaper. I'm glad I did - this thing scores a home run. I was surprised at how well it worked. I took out pencil sized roots without too much trouble and popped out the occasional stone with nothing more than a burp. I did run into an area that was clearly a rock garden in the past and it was way beyond the capabilities of this thing - but no resentment there. I dug down 10-12 inches of topsoil that had never been anything but my lawn in the past. It was a little odd that I had better results working by pulling the machine backwards toward me but I doubt the mantis would have been any better. I am accustomed to a large tiller with a stake that holds the machine back. For the size of the space I was tilling, I wouldn't trade it. Assembly took 10 minutes and the unit seems pretty substantial. For the rocks I hit there was no damage to the tiller - I did have to unwind roots from the tines a few times. The wheels are pretty solid for what they are and it is nice to be able to raise them up if you desire deeper digging. Don't be afraid of this unit for its tiny size and price - it is a little beast!
