It has the exact same functionality as the Steel HR, but in a smaller package: watch, steps, heart rate, distance, calories burned, connected GPS, alarms, automatic sleep tracking, notifications, do not disturb, and tracking for 37 different types of workouts including running, walking, weightlifting, swimming, yoga, zumba, tennis, etc. The face is touch sensitive, but I really only use the button on the right hand side.
Step tracking, heart rate, and distance is fairly accurate: way better than the Fitbit and almost as accurate as the Garmin and Apple. Connected GPS using my Android phone is very accurate, and there are some nice features such as pace and elevation tracking that show up in the app, along with detailed route maps, workout duration, and calories burned. Heart rate is checked every every 10 mins throughout the day and at night while sleeping, but when you select a workout, it monitors your heart rate in real time—an excellent feature.
I use Cronometer, MyFitnessPal, MapMyRun and a few other fitness apps which all integrate seamlessly with the Health Mate app, and I also have a Withings scale, blood pressure monitor, and Steel HR. I value seeing all of this data on one dashboard without having to constantly switch between apps.
I’ve had the Pulse HR for 3 weeks, have been wearing it 24/7, and am just charging it for the first time now with 18% left. I also swim with it 2x-3x per week, and hope it remains durable over time. What would take this from a solid 4.5 stars to 5 for me would be the ability to set move and hydration alerts on the device, and log water intake from my wrist (or at least in the app).
The free phone ap is where you see all the info; the watch screen has digital time, steps, heart rate, calories, & remaining battery charge. It was fairly easy to download the ap and to pair the phone & tracker--I did it on 1st attempt. Maker advertises 26 days battery life--I didn't believe it, but I've been wearing it constantly for nearly 3 weeks & I still have 20% battery left. I think I will get very close to the 26 days of charge. I think the battery lasts so long because the info is mostly on the phone ap. Phone ap is easy to use, & info can be edited, &you can add notes in several places. It will track calories consumed, but you have to enter the food you've eaten.
I only have 4 negatives: text is VERY small due to small screen--hard for us older folk. But edit function in phone ap saves the day--you can fix any errors you made. The screen is not bright enough to read easily in strong sunlight--the "always bright" function doesn't seem to keep it from dimming in daylight. The alarm vibrates against your skin--if I'm doing anything at all I don't feel it. And the light-up with a wrist turn doesn't work too well--I just use the button. This doesn't bother me, however. For me the positives far outweigh these few issues.
In a nutshell--lots of options & functionality in a small package, priced comparably with Fitbit, easy to use, comfortable to wear. Size is particularly suited to a woman, which the larger tracker I 1st tried was not.
Pros: The Withings app and sync process are infinitely better than Fitbit. Connected GPS is much more consistent with the Withings app. The Pulse HR is lower profile (size), which is my aim in a fitness tracker; if I was in the market for a watch I'd go for the Steel HR for the same reason. Battery life is incredible; maybe not 20 days but easily two weeks.
Toss up: Step counts are much stricter on Withings, maybe under counting compared to Fitbit's over counting, but either way is fine for trend analysis. Sleep tracking and HR quality also seem comparable to Fitbit. The Pulse HR has no alternative band options; it's crazy they aren't using a standard narrow watch band - same for Fitbit.
Cons: I would like to see Withings add a active minutes tracker; this is easy enough to achieve with Google Fit syncing, but it would be nice to have it built in. I'd also like reminders (e.g. hourly, morning/afternoon, etc) to move around, get in X steps or active minutes. Finally, the configurable interval exercise in Fitbit is missed here - I had to download another (free) app to have that timer. These are all relatively small quibbles relative to the overall value of the product - it is relatively cheap, has a nice design, and does it's job very well and better than the competition.
