After All (Cape Harbor Book 1) Kindle Edition
From New York Times bestselling author Heidi McLaughlin comes a heartfelt story about overcoming great loss and forgiving past sins to find happiness again.
Brooklyn Hewett hasn’t set foot in Cape Harbor for fifteen years—not since an accident claimed the love of her life, Austin Woods. Desperate to move forward, Brooklyn has focused on raising her daughter for the past fourteen years. But when the opportunity comes along to renovate the old Driftwood Inn, Brooklyn knows it’s time to go home.
But it won’t be easy. For one, Austin’s best friend, Bowie Holmes, still lives in Cape Harbor. Brooklyn hasn’t quite been able to forget him: not since the night they spent together—the same night they both lost Austin. Separated by tragedy and guilt, they’re brought together by the Driftwood project. And as they rebuild the inn, they discover they’re also rebuilding something else.
Brooklyn’s always been desperate to move on, not knowing that she first needs to reconcile past transgressions. She can’t forget, but she can forgive—Austin, Bowie, and herself—on her way toward long-awaited happiness.

This is by far my top read of 2019!” —Shari J. Ryan, author

First I loved the cover. I wasn't sure about reading a second chance romance book but I knew Heidi and it would be good. The descriptions of the Pacific Northwest made me just fall in love with Cape Harbor. Fictional as it might be I know small towns like that exist and I am so envious of the people that live there! I would just love living by the ocean but the dessert it is!
Anyway, as always, the characters just jump out and come to life in front of you. I so enjoy a book when I feel as if I am watching a movie rather than reading the book. Although I know the book is much better! Brooklyn's story is so heart wrenching! Although I feel she brought that heartbreak and guilt on herself she also dragged all her friends along with her in the heartbreak. I don't believe Brooklyn was to blame for the the tragedy that tore the friendships apart and why she left because eventually something was going to give. Austin could handled it a lot better than he did but blame it on young inexperience on both their parts.
Poor Bowie was dragged along when all along he would have been more than happy to go with her plan if she had only included him but alas life has another plan. Fifteen years and a 14 year old daughter later she returns to Cape Harbor to do what she does best, renovate the old down Driftwood Inn.
Now she and her friends are older and she has to face the music of running away. With the help and love of Carly she learns to let go and move forward with her life and give her daughter the stable life that she deserves.
The developments through the book are jaw dropping! I so enjoyed the book and the discoveries that brought this beautiful family together finally.
A must read! So beautifully written - highly recommended.
After high school, Austin pursues his dream of owning his own fishing company, and Brooklyn sets aside her dream of leaving school to go to college and pursue a nursing career. Instead, she takes a job in Bowie’s family’s construction business. During this time, Bowie becomes Brooklyn’s best friend, though she is still in love with Austin.
After Austin is killed when his fishing boat capsizes, Brooklyn moves away to be near her parents, have her daughter (Bristol) and build a successful career as a home renovater and decorator.
This story takes place when Brooklyn and Bristol
return to Cape Harbor to renovate the historic inn owned by Austin’s mother, 15 years after Austin died and Brooklyn left.
This is a sad, but heartwarming tale about love lost, old love re-discovered, and the bonds of family and friends.
Some of the themes of the book are quite repetitive, but, overall, it is a good read.
On the positive side, I liked the flashbacks to the past helping readers understand the culture of Cape Harbor, strongly rooted in the fishing industry and the significance of Driftwood Inn and Carly. We learned about the relationship of Austin and Brooklyn, it’s development, and the friendship and connection of Bowie, Austin and Brooklyn.
The downside to this story is readers are never given critical pieces of information that would serve to close the chapters of Bowie and Brooklyn’s story and relationship in a more satisfying way. The information needing to be revealed involved two imperfect yet charitable characters Carly and Austin. Since there is a Book 2 being released February second, I’m hoping this omission by the author was intentional and would be revealed in the next installment. Otherwise, I’m NOT happy! ☹️
Brooklyn’s daughter, Brystol, was stated to be fourteen years old but her character acted and talked more like an eight year old. I liked Brooklyn and Bowie’s relationship but some of the story seemed to become too repetitive and this questioning behavior by Brooklyn on whether to stay in Cape Harbor or leave after the renovation of the Driftwood Inn became rather tiresome and caused me to have a few eye rolls at times. I mean.... seriously?
Book 2 is supposed to give us Graham and Brooklyn’s best friend, Rennie’s story. I’m on the fence whether to continue with the next installment. If I do, it’s only to hopefully get some answers left hanging in this book. I have to say, I LOVED the narrator in Audible. She was more like a storyteller with a pleasant, relaxing tone. Beautifully told!

She weaves a world that is so extraordinary and real all at the same time. As a reader, you feel what the characters feel, you live vicariously through them as they embark on their own personal adventures.
This story is nothing short of incredible. Heartbreaking, emotional, love filled and it will definitely prompt goosebumps.
After All will be added to my list of books that I can add will re read.
