This is a great tool and best of all it is made in the USA! I wish that it would come with a sheath as the blade is heavy duty and sharp. I made my own sheath and now it is perfect. I will be buying a second for use at my cabin in PA.

The grind is a little steep and not the most conducive for splitting

Use it all the time. Works beautifully and allows me to be much more precise in my splits. I use it for more that creating kindling. I am new to using these types of tools and discovered how a piece of hickory makes an excellent hammer for using the froe, doesn't dent it up the way a metal hammer might. Excellent tool.

I bought the shingle froe to make tinder for my wood stove rather than denuding the dead branches on pine trees, or making shingles. This has given me a new respect for those who have the ability to make shingles with a froe. Of course they make their shingles out of cedar, which may give them far better splits than the ash I have been using. I also wonder about the edge on the froe which is very blunt. Generally a sharp edge will split wood more easily, but I have yet to find a froe instruction which suggested putting a sharper, more acutely angled wedge on the blade. I have seen special froe cutting holders/benches on old time tool use TV shows which may help, and will certainly ease the back.

The handle is hickory, and should be shaped so that the blade fits near the end of the blade. Since hickory splits easily it would be best to drill the right size hole for the screw that hold the blade against the grain.

All in all, the froe does what I bought it for, and I am happy with it. Even if I will never have the skill to make shingles except perhaps for a doll house.

The blade fit very well over the handle, and the splitting edge was sharp as delivered. However, I do agree with the point that the included attachment screw is too small.

So what? You just substitute one a little bigger (no drilling required) at assembly, and get to work
