Story
Nedd Brockmann isn’t afraid to dream big. Fresh after running fifty marathons in fifty days, the twenty-three-year-old had an idea: a 4000-kilometre run across Australia, averaging 100 kilometres per day with the aim of completing it in the fastest known time of 43 days. He wasn’t chasing fame or public recognition. He just wanted to test his limits and raise a million dollars for homelessness in the process.

But what of the stories she used to tell herself? That 'real life' begins only once you're thin or beautiful, that good things happen only to other people. Your Own Kind of Girl reveals a childhood punctuated by grief, anxiety and compulsion and tells how these forces shaped Clare's life for better and for worse. But what if you realised that you weren't just lying about the little things, but the big "life" stuff too? When Toni sat down to write this memoir, she realized that the lies she was telling herself were hiding some pretty important home truths—about her work, her identity and her mental health. Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

Publisher's Summary
The incredible life of an astonishing athlete, disability advocate and 2022 Australian of the Year.
Dylan Alcott has never let his disability get in the way of what he wanted to achieve. His family treated him no differently to any other kid, and it was the best thing they ever did. Growing up, Dylan always had a positive attitude to life. So when he discovered sport, he’d have a go at anything and could always be found at the centre of the action, giving his best and playing to win. Then he tried wheelchair basketball and tennis and was hooked.
Fast forward 10 years or so, and the now three-time Paralympic gold medallist, Order of Australia recipient, Grand Slam tennis champion and philanthropist combines elite sport with a love for music (he’s a triple j radio announcer and is famous for his crowd-surfing). But Dylan’s greatest passion is changing the way those with disabilities are perceived, and to inspire young people - whether they have disabilities or are able-bodied - to achieve their dreams. It’s a passion that drives him every day of his life.
In this fully updated edition of Able, which includes stories about his latest achievements, including Wimbledon and the French Open, Dylan shares his story. It's the tale of someone who's proud of who he is, who has a go, does everything with heart and soul, who always sees the upside and never takes himself too seriously. As inspiring, honest and funny as its author, Able proves that for every one thing you can't do, there are 10,000 other things that you can.

Dylan Alcott. You once signed a hard copy of your great book and in it said that I was a legend and to keep kicking goals, something I live by every day because I suffer from Cerebral Palsy. You are a LEGEND in my eyes and recommend that everyone read your book. I would love to meet you in person one day.

Making disability sexy
What a ride, this feels like a warm up... Dylan has only really just begun and there is so much more to come. Mostly focusing on the Basketball and Tennis (which is amazing by the way). I got to the end feeling like the best of Dylan Alcott is yet to come. Don't get me wrong, I am in awe of his achievements to date, he has worked his arse of to achieve what he has and it is that ability and drive that will propel him forward being the best damn ability advocate. I personally am removing the dis from disability, because at the end of the day we all have challenges but if every one of us focused on our ability rather than our limitations I can't help but feel the world would be a better place. Looking forward to the next installment Dylan.

I'd give it 7 stars if I could
Quite possibly the best book I've ever read. Dylan Alcott's humility, courage, and persistent and powerful advocacy throughout both his sporting career and his life "off the court" is a remarkably inspiring account. Dylan's continued advocacy for trying to change the status quo of people living with disabilities in Australia, in particular the way our society typically views people with disability through a negative or "less than" view than that of able bodied people is just amazing. He has done so much for this cause, and yet, he keeps on going on doing more every day. it's a truly relatable account by a typical Aussie sporting bloke/world class sporting legend that is both humourous and uplifting, yet thought provoking in encouraging all of us to do better for people with disability, so that one day it is no longer the status quo for people with disability to be routinely discriminated against. I honestly can't think of anyone who would not benefit from reading this. I'm not even into sport at all, and I found it a magnificent story and did not find any prolonged accounts of his sporting endeavours and successes to be too prolonged or "boring" or as if he were "name dropping" when he mentions his personal encounters with various celebrities or even occasional encounters with members of the British Royal family. I believe all of this added to its charm and interest. Dylan is NEVER boastful of his achievements and in fact, this entire book could be conceived as a giant letter of gratitude for everyone who has supported him on his journey throughout life to date. His humility and life calling passion for disability advocacy rings true with every word he writes/says (if you're listening to the audiobook version as I did). I think this book should be mandatory reading for school children in Australian schools. I encourage everyone to read/listen to it! Thank you Dylan for everything.
