A woman thinks she’s found her long-missing sister, but the discovery only leads to more questions in this wrenching thriller by the author of The Deception.

Elise McDonald is sure she has just spotted her sister, Grace, in a department store in Leeds. The last time she saw her was fourteen years ago, at Grace’s third birthday party, when the children scattered during a game of hide and seek—but Grace never returned from her hiding place.

When the girl approaches, she introduces herself as Ruth and chats about her father, a doctor, and the village she grew up in. But Elise believes that Ruth is really Grace—even if she doesn’t know it. Elise’s family dismisses her theory, claiming that pregnancy is making her hormonal and irrational. But her aunt, at least, is willing to help her investigate—and eventually Jack Priestly, the original detective on the case, is drawn in as well.

Is there any chance they can solve a cold case the police had long given up on—or is Elise deluding herself? And if she’s right, what really happened on that fateful day?

Having worn many hats in my lifetime, writing is certainly one of the most fulfilling. I initially pursued a career in childcare before moving on to train as a therapeutic counsellor and eventually to a role in the voluntary sector with Victim Support. My five years with this incredible organisation provided a wealth of experience and insight into the criminal justice system. The diversity of people using the service has enriched my own life experience and understanding of human nature, which I hope is reflected in my writing.

I mainly write crime/domestic thrillers, although three women's fiction novels are in the pipeline for 2024.

Most of the characters were likable and well -developed but the plot was predictable. However, it was still a good story. It wasn't particularly a thriller or shocking but was well-written.

We lost a three year old in our family fifty one years, ago. We know no more today than the day he was taken. That, I guess, is why I am drawn to this plot in a novel. Loved this one. I read another a few weeks, ago. When I finished it, I was glad to have finished it. ABSURD! This one was right on the Mark and a real page turner. Wish we could have had a Jack in our lives.

The topic was interesting, but despite being dramatic subject matter (child abduction, abductee found years later), I found the narrative strangely stilted and emotionless. This was true whether the narrator was young or old, male or female, seasoned detective or young victim. Each chapter was ostensibly told by a different character, but they all sounded the same to me. Also, the abductor 's identity was painfully obvious long before story's end, so the "dramatic revelation" fell flat. I would not read another novel by this author.

This was a book that I found hard to lay down at night. Reading at bedtime usually helps to relax me and make me ready for the night's rest. This was not one of those books! I was anxious to see what the next page would bring. The story of a three year old child going missing from her own birthday party was intriguing, to say the least. To have an older sister recognize her years later was an interesting - and wholly believable - to me, at least - twist. After all, family resemblance is noticed generation after generation. The storyline was unique and the characters were interesting. As for the editing - bad editing is one of my "pet peeves", however I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't even notice - or just didn't let it bother me. I would definitely read another book by this author and recommend this book to friends.

This was a very pleasant surprise and I thought a very good read. I read the preface and was influenced by the cover picture of the book but perhpas I should pay attention to the old adage "do not judge a book by it's cover"

The story line has many twists and turns but the narration of the story seen from the perspective of different characters is well done and does keep the book "tight" with no meandering away from the subject matter. It is one book one story told from differing views and few opinions. It could have digressed away from the lead story to include other events but it does not and as I say sticks to the main theme

At 99c this has to be the best buy on Amazon and leaves many of the so called celebrity autors in the shade

Other reviewers has said they lost interest because they figured it out, however, I guess I never thought of this as a "mystery". From the beginning, I thought it was the story of a mystery. I was a little disappointed when it all seemed to come to an end so early in the book, but I quickly realized there was much more to it after that. I was very glad the author went on and let the people explain their parts of all this and how they felt about it. This book is well-written, except the punctuation, which drove me nuts. English or American, commas and grammar are still important; that is the cause of many sentences being read over and over to assertain the proper sense of it. I was going to give this book 4 stars because of that, but, in the end, I thought it was an excellent story and excellent writing by the author.

I was lured to read this by the synopsis provided by Book Bub. It is actually a very good book, characters are fully developed and you want to finish it. I did find it a bit slow at times but that could just be the season of life I am in. It is a luxury right now to read; something I do every night. I am thankful the author ended the book on a positive note because even at my age I still want a happy ending.

It is a very well written story, each characters etched so well that we travel with them in their despair and happiness. Couldn't put it down once I started reading. Gillian Jackson is an excellent writer. This is her third book that I have read. All of them excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars read in a day
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 11, 2022
A fantastic fast paced story, told over a fourteen year period but starting in the present day with snippets of the past brought in through out. Loveable characters that the author doesn’t bore by letting you getting to know them all. A brilliantly written very sad story that I just couldn’t stop reading with a fantastic twist and great ending. My first by this author but most definitely not my last.

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked it!

Having read some reviews that were quite negative with regard to this book, I read it expecting to not like it, but I did. The plot was interesting, (perhaps a bit far fetched) but believable and I did not pick the perpetrator, and was saddened when he was exposed, but I think the book was good, I will be looking for this author again.

This book is very much a fairy tale with a lovely happy ending. It lacks the suspense and threat of other books of this genre. However the story is well constructed and there is good character development. Not for those who want grit and Gore. Ideal for those of a more sensitive disposition. An enjoyable read. Recommend.
