The Mister (Mister & Missus Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 24,060 ratings

The #1 New York Times bestseller—a thrilling and seductive Cinderella love story from E L James, author of the phenomenal bestselling Fifty Shades Trilogy.

Clasping her plait at the base of her neck, I tug lightly, bringing her lips up to mine. "Alessia," I breathe, and kiss her again, softly, slowly. She stills in my arms, then brings her hands up to clutch my biceps, closing her eyes as she accepts me. I deepen the kiss, my tongue teasing her lips, and she opens her mouth. She tastes of warmth and grace and sweet seduction.

London, present day. Life has always been easy for Maxim Trevelyan, the "spare" to the earldom of Trevethick. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he's never had to work, and he's rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family's title, wealth, and estates, and the responsibility that entails. It's a role he's not prepared for and one he struggles to face.

But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who's recently joined his staff. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she's an alluring mystery, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. As Maxim's longing for her deepens into a passion he's never experienced and dares not name, he's left to wonder just who is Alessia Demachi? And can he protect her from the malevolence that threatens her?

From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Albanian Balkans, The Mister combines the sensuality of a modern Regency romance with the danger, desire, and adventure of E L James's captivating storytelling, leaving the reader breathless to the very last page.

Loved it!! Couldn’t stop reading it!
This is exactly what I was looking for. A romantic , sexy novel that I looked forward to reading and once I started, couldn’t put it down. It has been a while since I got lost in a story and I missed it. Easy ready, very entertaining , highly recommended. Chapter fourteen was my favorite! Now looking forward to reading the Mistress.

I thought this book was amazing. Great, interesting story. The things that happened to Alessia would have made me curl up in a ball and cry, but she was very strong and courageous. Good story about a young woman from Albania who had plans to come to England and work. She wanted to get away from the arranged marriage to a man who was abusive, and also her father is abusive. In her attempt to get to England, she finds herself with sex trafficers, and actually manages to escape. It takes her many days, but she finds her way to her mother's friend who helps her get a job as a house cleaner. One of the houses that she cleans is Maxum's. Lots if near tragedies happen and a lot of drama. I thought it all flowed very well.
Lots of people have reviewed this book poorly. I think one person in particular was complaining about too many commas(which I didn't notice)and run on sentences(again, didn't notice). She also must have gotten a bad copy because she said words were missing. My ebook was solid, every word on every page was there. I loved the story and can't wait to read The Missus. But, I don't think I ever want to go to Albania. Sounds dreadful.

4 Stars!

Before I begin my actual review, I have two major issues with the way readers are reviewing this book:

1) I don’t agree with those claiming that EL James is a terrible writer. I would love to know what literary genius these people are reading in the ROMANCE genre on the regular. Seriously. I have read some romance authors who do write better than James, but I have read and DNF’d a TON of garbage romance writers. What I personally enjoy about James’ writing, is that it’s fast paced and very heavily focused on the hero/heroine relationship building. There isn’t a lot of other “fluff.” One of my biggest pet peeves is when I’m like 60% of the way through a book and the hero/heroine have yet to really build any time of legit relationship. Talk about a snooze fest.....

I think the major issue here is jealousy, but what do I know.

2) Half the readers are complaining it’s too much like Fifty, and half are complaining it’s too different....I don’t honestly know what to say about these people. Let’s review the actual book called The Mister, m’kay?

The Mister contains one of my all time favorite tropes: rags to riches for the heroine and a major gap in social class between the hero and heroine. Call me sexist but I love it. It’s such a fantasy. Who wouldn’t want to be swept away by some gorgeous royal? I know I wouldn’t mind one bit. Alessia, our heroine, is a cleaner who finds herself cleaning the house of Maxim Traveleyan. Maxim is wealthy, he’s royalty, he’s a little broken when they first meet and he’s perfect for Alessia.

Their connection is fast, it’s convincing, it’s consuming, and it’s sexy. Alessia’s background is dark and so we have a bit of a damsel in distress storyline as well. YES PLEASE!

One thing I loooooved about the story is that James infuses some references to classical music since Alessia plays the piano quite well. It was a refreshing subplot. I really enjoyed pulling up the classical pieces on my iPhone, listening to them, imagining them as background music for the scene and trying to figure out why that particular piece was chosen. It made the storyline much richer!

The last 20% of the book is quite suspenseful and I found myself racing through the pages. I wish I had slowed down a bit to really enjoy it. I was too eager to finish. That being said, I think the one thing keeping me from rating the book higher, is that James played it too safe with the darker elements of this book. I think she could have really pushed the elements further than she did. I almost wanted more violence, more running, more evil. It would have made the resolution all the more satisfying in my opinion. But I’m a little twisted so....there’s that.

Otherwise, I’m deeply satisfied with The Mister and hope for more from James soon!

This is another winner from the author. It was an excellent read. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Pre-ordered and ignored the reviews. Really wanted to like it but it was hard. I skimmed a lot and for a higher priced book that stinks. -Heroine is interesting with an interesting story. Hero - not remotely interesting, in fact he’s kind of gross. I wanted to quit reading for the first 30%. Sex with other women, heroine cleaning up his used condoms and seeing another woman. That’s not romance and could have been left out. Sure he became a great guy later but his turn around is too fast to be believed. He’s a child trapped in a mans body. Then the ending is abrupt. No epilogue, just this crescendo and then done. Over. We didn’t get anything resolved with him and Caroline - who the heroine will be faced with often...ouch and yuck. And then no resolution on a bright future for the heroine and her music. No idea how they will work their future out and how he leaves his pathetic former life behind because that sure doesn’t work with her. This is also weeks after the brothers death and so much is unresolved there with his emotions. Just nothing. Overall I enjoyed the music aspect and this author can absolutely write but this was boring. There I said it. Aside from the little bit of action we get and that felt forced at times. It was boring and if this had been a lesser known author I would have DNF, but I like this author personally and her other series so i kept going. Ultimately the “hero” of this book is just awful and not someone a reader can cheer for. Had he been given some interesting background or anything really - we could have.

Also the switching between POV with alternating first and third person was very distracting. I feel like whoever she used as a beta reader editorial beta could have really steered this better and let her down. It had such potential but in the end I feel like he’s still gross, she’s still too naive, it dragged and there is too much unresolved. So many missed opportunities for this story. This book totally bombed for me. If more come in the series, if it is a series I won’t be buying.
