Dragon Age Origins (*****)
This game is a must buy for RPG or fantasy fans. It has great story, memorable characters, tactical combat, and a decent leveling system. It is the closest game to the old Baldur's Gate series with pretty 3D graphics, and top-notch voice acting. I played the game with a Windows 7 64-bit machine and it did crash on occasion (Maybe once every 5 hours). Some if it was definitely caused by the extra mods I used, so the best way to play the game is to save often.
Dragon Age Awakening (****)
A full expansion to Dragon Age Origins. This game occurs directly after the main game in terms of the story. It allows you to import your character, and carries over some decisions from the main game. It is about 2/3rds the length of Origins and gives you pretty much more of the same thing. The minor downfalls of this game are that your new companions are not as interesting or fleshed out as your Origins companions. Also, many end game talents and spells are overpowered, removing any challenge for most of the campaign.
Return to Ostagar & Warden's Keep (***)
These are missions that you can play during Dragon Age Origins. They help flesh out the story more and give you a lot of armor and weapons. Overall they are fairly short (2 hours each) and the loot is overpowered, which can make the rest of your Origin's campaign imbalanced. However the additional story is nice.
The Stone Prisoner (*****)
This is a mission you can play during Dragon Age Origins. It gives you another companion, and a small story centered around that character. The character is fairly entertaining, and has interactions throughout the rest of the Origins campaign, so this DLC is very well done.
Leliana's Song (n/a)
I didn't completely play through this one. It is a side mission that occurs before the Dragon Age Origins story focusing on Leliana's history. You play as Leliana, and gain a few other new companions.
Witch Hunt (n/a)
I didn't completely play through this one. It is a mission that happens after the Awakening storyline. It fleshes out the ending from Origins. You can import your character and you get new companions.
The Darkspawn Chronicles & The Golems of Amgarrak (n/a)
I didn't try these at all. Darkspawn Chronicles is an alternate history, where you play as the darkspawn. Golems of Amgarrak is a side adventure for your main character.
Feastday Gifts and Pranks (*)
These are a bunch of items you can purchase which alter your companion's perception of you. Useful if you want to see all the romance options without needing to go through all the dialog. Not really necessary though, as the dialog options are pretty clear.
Different skill trees and spells for each character allow you to customize how you will fight, and your tactics are important. This wide range of options allows for great replayability, and I'm on my third run through. There are four difficulty levels: an easy difficulty level if you don't want to have to micromanage fights and just enjoy the story, normal to get a balance of both story and a few challenging fights, or you can crank it up if you live for the action. One particularly nice feature is that you can change the difficulty level during a game, so you can tailor better to the level of challenge you want without having to completely start over to do it.
One problem with the world is the lack of good guys. It's full of backstabbing politicos, unjust societies, assassins, alcoholics, demon summoners, etc.- and those are the good guys! I often ended up siding with groups or individuals that are deeply flawed and trying to pick the lesser of two evils. For all of the fantastic lore, this world could really use some honorable or likeable factions.
I originally bought the game for X-Box 360, but later bought the PC version. The PC version does not support a game controller, and clicking where you want to go with a mouse can be a little frustrating, but I found the PC version better in all other ways. The PC version has better graphics, better display of information, and easier control of tactics, spells, inventory, crafting, and quest related information. The game runs very smoothly on my laptop, but does cause the computer to heat up significantly more than any other program I have run, and my computer actually shuts down if I play too long at a stretch.
Top reviews from other countries
Alright just so we are clear I am not a big gamer so finding a game that I really enjoy is harder to come by. I like a game that has more to it than hacking and slashing; utilizing a storyline and characters to create an well rounded game.
DA:Origins places the player in the shoes of a protagonist of their choosing, extending beyond just the physical appearance and racial background of the character. There are six different openings to the game based on the origin chosen by the player. Each choice changes the way other characters interact with you and even provide different interactions for the player based on the relationship status.
There is a main quest that is interesting and has the opportunity to be different to each player based on your choices along the way. There are also many side quests to keep you busy if you are easily sidetracked by that sort of thing.
Another interesting feature within the game are the Codex Pages. These are descriptions of companions, weapons, histories, places, religions and even intercepted love notes that can be found along the way. They give the game a level of depth and I can appreciate all the effort that went in to creating the world of DA:Origins.
The graphics are a little behind since the game came out in 2009 but are still phenomenal for their realistic quality.
As to the additional content I know the date is expired but I gave it a shot and the content still downloaded for me. (You never know right?) many other reviews said they couldn't get the content but I urge you to try anyways and see where it gets you. In the end it is still a great product for the price you pay.
I have currently completed all the downloadable content and one origin and am working on my second trying out new choices and different approaches to all the quests.
Definetly worth the buy in my unprofessional opinion. Hopefully this will help someone in their descion.
