A young woman starts having doubts about her dream man in this unsettling thriller from the bestselling author of Girl in Bed Three.

Nineteen-year-old Ellen is thrilled to have Jack Bryant as a best friend and roommate. She would be even happier to have him as a boyfriend. Ellen doesn’t just love Jack, she loves his entire family—so perfect, so wealthy, so envied by the neighbours.

Then, one terrible Saturday morning, Ellen and Jack visit his family home—and find six hanging bodies.

Little by little, Ellen learns that beneath the family’s glossy façade was a seething cauldron of abuse, dysfunction, and toxicity that she couldn’t have imagined. But the more Jack reveals about why he had to leave the house and its dark secrets, the more Ellen wonders: Did he narrowly escape tragedy—or does he know much more about the carnage than he’s admitting?

Sarah was born in London and now lives in a village in South Northamptonshire. She gained a Masters degree in Eighteenth-Century French and English art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, before teaching art in secondary schools for thirteen years. After working with human rights organisations that protect minority groups from institutional abuse, Sarah worked towards a PhD at The Open University, researching the effect of secrecy on marginalised people, specifically the biological children of Roman Catholic priests. She has spoken about her research on various news programmes for the BBC and other media outlets around the world. It was this sense of secrecy and silencing that became the inspiration for her first crime novel, The Convent.

Sarah is hugely obsessed with reading and is amassing such an unrealistically large book collection that some of it is now in storage. She is also addicted to writing, and after inventing stories (mostly in secret) from a young age and having various articles and short stories published, she wrote a children's book, The Top Secret Diary of Davina Dupree - inspired by her daughter - in 2013. Overjoyed to hear that young readers were enjoying the story, she went on to write a series about Davina Dupree.

When she is not looking after her three children and menagerie of pets, or going for long walks with her wonderful partner Rich, Sarah can be found writing, while consuming large amounts of chocolate.

I think the author is still green and there are good things to come. Parts of this book were very engaging and others were totally unbelievable. But I liked the general premise and would definitely try another book by this author.

I didn't care for the religious theme of this book. I would try another book by this author in the future.

It was a good story had good characters and well described scenes but the ending was blah to don't know whaT it is about the ending but I didn't like it

I’m sorry. The poor grammar in this book kept me from being able to enjoy it. Was that intentional because the protagonist is 18 years old? I began sighing every time I read another “him and me.”

I recognized the true crime that this novel is loosely based on and I was immediately intrigued. I had watched a documentary on that crime and it stuck with me. It was horribly sad. Ms. Sheridan did such a good job of taking that event and fictionalizing other events surrounding it. This was an excellent read!!!

This is my review of A Perfect Family.

Six family members of the same family, the Bryants, were found hanging in their conservatory. Detective Sergeant Moretti, who is now leading the investigation, has not disclosed causes of death…suicide or murder.

Ellen is thrilled to have Jack Bryant as a best friend and roommate. She would be even happier to have him as a boyfriend. Ellen doesn’t just love Jack, she loves his entire family—so perfect, so wealthy, so self-assured and confident. She had first met Jack through his sister, Sabrina, and had been in love with Jack for quite a while, but she could never tell him how she felt about him, for fear of ruining the friendship.

Then, one terrible Saturday morning, the victims were discovered by the eldest son, Jack Bryant, and his best friend and roommate, nineteen-year-old Ellen. They had gone to visit his family home.

After the discovery of the family victims, Jack is numb and unable to speak or cope with the situation. He had lost his whole immediate family. Ellen, while devastated, knew she needed to look after Jack, making sure he was surviving the ordeal.

But Ellen’s mum warns Ellen that “the Bryant family is a complicated one.”

Little by little, Ellen learns that beneath the family outward appearance, there was abuse and dysfunction. But the more Jack reveals about why he had to leave the house and its dark secrets, the more Ellen wonders if Jack is involved in any of this.

This was a well-written thriller with relatable characters and short chapters to build up the tension.

Many thanks to the author, and Bloodhound Books for my digital copy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow and predictable
Reviewed in Australia on August 23, 2022
This is quite a predictable novel and has, at its centre, a protagonist with pretty poor decision-making skills. The "I'll tell you later" prop is used a bit which means the story is drawn out at times and populated with filler material. Unfortunately, for me, the book didn't really reach any great heights.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but slow story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2023
I really like the storyline but it was painfully slow book. If not the curiousity to know what's will be the end I probably would give up. This will be perfect book for those readers who like to know what's going on in main character mind. I like more action. In this book action was slow, for example, to get from point A to B took a whole chapter. And I can't say that information in that chapter was important to main story.
But as I said, the storyline is brilliant!

I felt this book was aimed at a teenage reader. I found the plot predictable and found I skim read to get to the end.
