AWARDED FIRST PLACE PENCRAFT 2023: CHILDREN'S FABLES
________________
At the Flaky Acres Feather Farm, Roo-wallaby catches Roo-rooster plucking out the oily black seeds from a lemony sunflower.

This would be fine except there's been a long, hot drought, and the billabong is dry. Also, small Babba-Roo needs to eat.

When Roo-rooster calls for help, grouchy Captain Quokka appears. Can he make peace? After all, he is a cousin of Roo-wallaby.

Everywhere Roo-rooster turns, another wallaby cousin appears. What will happen when the ground begins to shake and the claws and bare nose of a wombat appear?

Get This! Especially if you are introducing Australia to a classroom, it includes an Aussie Glossary of Terms.
Nocturnal marsupials and macropods abound at Flaky Acres; bilbies, quirky quokka, even cousin koala appear. Problem-solving, zoology, farm and fowl, reading and language skills are hopping from this Aussie kingdom tale.

Another remarkable CAPTURE BOOKS title that boys love to read as well as girls.

Review

"Stunningly illustrated, this book is a unique publishing experience designed to capture children's attention but will educate and entertain the nature lover and explorer in all of us. If your child has a fascination to learn about the world's animals or the places they live, you'll find it in this book. Arkinsly introduces a small cast of exciting animal characters that are unique to Australia. It brings you an unparalleled snapshot of some of Australia's most amazing little critters that live in the land down under.

"Some of the rarest and most lovable animals, Wombats, Quokkas, Koalas, Bilbies, and Wallabies, provide a great introduction to the animal kingdom's diversity, and Arkinsly adds in a bit of Aussie slang to make her story even more authentic.

"This cute, well-designed Australian Children's Book for young kids featuring hand-drawn artwork by Yolanda Van Heerden of cute Wombats, Quokkas, Koalas, Bilbies, and Wallabies is simply a fun book to share with your children!" - Dave @AuthorsReading.com

"Young readers will get more than an exciting story when they read Roo's Fine Flapping Day-a new chapter book by Auralee Arkinsly. They will also learn about the Land Down Under as well as some fun Australian lingo. If that isn't enough, readers will also learn a good moral lesson, much like the ones we find in Aesop's Fables." - Crystal Bowman

Book (1) DARLING HEDGEHOG GOES DOWN A FOXHOLE

Book review by Barbara Bamberger Scott

"It crossed Darling’s mind that maybe a friendship with Miss Fox was not meant to be."

Darling—a young, innocent hedgehog—loses track of her parents and is searching for them when she falls into a hole and winds up with Miss Fox, who seems all too pleased to have a hedgehog visitor, even offering Darling, whom she keeps calling “Dumpling,” a pink tutu and a ribbon for her hair. She’s so kind that Darling naively begins to try to figure out a way to reciprocate her hospitality. Then Darling offers to eat slugs, her favorite and something the fox despises—the perfect solution. Miss Fox doesn’t mind that all that eating will make Darling plump. All goes well until Darling accidentally wanders into Miss Fox’s kitchen and makes a horrifying discovery. From that, she learns a valuable lesson: “Not every stranger can be a friend;” foxes will be foxes, no matter how friendly they seem.

In this, her first early reader chapter book, Arkinsly has created a clever tale with an important message for its audience: be careful whom you befriend. The illustrations gracing every page are the creation of Julia Swazy and show great promise for that young artist. Darling is charming, with big, beaming soft eyes, while Miss Fox’s eyes are slitted and evoke suspicion. The hedgehog child is easily swayed by appeals to vanity and eager to please, but in a situation of true danger, she comes through heroically, a quality that the author would doubtless like for young readers to emulate. Using the “sly fox” as a symbolic lure appeals to the wider folklore of that animal in classic children’s stories, while Darling’s demeanor combines happy-go-lucky goodness combined with her strong determination to find her missing parents. This story will be an engaging read-to for younger children, with enough sophistication for older children to read, enjoy, and understand on their own.

RECOMMENDED by the US Review

"Good Laughter is Sheer Romance."

"I wrote this quirky little business book about the passion of being new, idealistic homeowners, about searching for the perfect house, about belonging and restlessness in neighborhoods, because I've experienced it all and more! Yes, "Before Long, Let's Move!" is a study in consumer behavior and personal economics. It's a story that reads like a comic strip, like Garfield, like British comedy because sometimes it's just better to laugh than cry.

I have suppressed it. I have bullied my way to it. I have begged the good Lord for relief. Finally, I wrote about it. If you have experienced any of these love it or list it longings and limitations, I hope you get a laugh from "Before Long, Let's Move!" too."

This Groundhog Day-styled parody is a first experimental storybook for Auralee Arkinsly. Having built and renovated several homes in unique situations, she is well-versed in the realistic idealism of buying and owning a home. Sometimes it is better to laugh than cry. And, then there's gold!

"Roo's Fine Flapping Day" is an adorable story about Roo-Rooster, whose day is happily spent eating sunflower seeds on Flaky Acre Feather Farm. But his nemesis, Roo Wallaby, isn't thrilled with Roo-Rooster's appetite, and she wants to make sure her soon-to-be new joey has enough food to survive the drought the land is currently going through. When conflict arises, the farm's animals choose sides, and not all of them are nice about it. Roo-Rooster must navigate these disagreements and learn how to cooperate. While learning healthy relationship strategies, the reader also dives into the Australian outback and sees beautifully illustrated pictures of the animals and learns about their lives.

Roo's Fine Flapping Day: At Flaky Acres Feather Farm (Auralee Arkisnly Picture Books for Early Readers Book 2) by Auralee Arkinsly

The story of a rooster is the pretext to make this book a teaching book located in the context of Australia, where you can learn different types of animals, rules of coexistence, and course, learning to live in society. Good teaching instrument for young children since it is also an entertaining and very well-illustrated story.

"Roo's Fine Flapping Day" by Auralee Arkinsly is an engaging story set in the Australian badlands. The book provides interesting information about native animals such as wallabies, quokkas, bilbies, koalas, and wombats. It features a likable local language and beautiful artwork, which makes it an attractive read for children. The story revolves around Roo, the main character, as he tries to manage the available food that is assumed to be enough for all the animals. The appendix at the beginning of the book makes it easier to understand.

This story is an excellent tool for teaching children the Golden Rule, suitable animal habitats, problem-solving methods, and conflict resolution. It also reinforces the importance of community and unity. It's an enjoyable read for families that educates them on the importance of harmony.

One day, Roo Rooster finds delicious black sunflower seeds and a whole lot of trouble. He soon discovers you can't please yourself at the expense of others. In his case, he finds himself on a collision course with a host of other animals on the farm.
This little book is beautifully illustrated and packed with information about animals native to Australia, and offers a crash course in the local slang too. The handy glossary at the beginning of the book makes it easy to follow along.
Parents will enjoy this story with their little ones as they learn about the Golden Rule, the different habitats of animals and how to problem-solve and sort out disagreements. It's a great start to the series.

Soon other Australian animals enter the conflict, giving children opportunity to learn more about these creatures as well as how to solve disagreements. It’s a fun book with colorful illustrations. It would also be a good discussions starter at home or in school. All opinions are my own.
