This is YA done right. Sure there is the occasional rogue grammar error and minor inconsistency, but the overall flow and style keeps the reader engaged and anticipatory over the course of the entire story. The story is engaging and well put together. There is an excellent blend of the normal teenage angst with supernatural teenage angst and the balance is great. The way young vampires are depicted in this tale is a refreshing way to fluff up a common story and make it fresh for the reader. There are enough similarities to make vampire fans happy and the differences are enough to spruce up the way we think of the common vampire without resorting to a generous coating of stripper dust. The maturity level of dialogue in the story is relatable to the target audience along with the everyday problems of a socially awkward teenager that doesn't quite fit in. The frank underlying message of finding your inner strength lends a respectable quality to this book that is a rare find in the Young Adult genre. The language and descriptions were reasonable and realistic and the settings are well described and easy to visualize. As with most initial books of a series this story does end on a serious cliffhanger that all but forces you to run out and grab the next book of the series, but I see no reason why it wouldn't be worth it.

This book was okay-ish. There was some good lore about vampires, and I like the bit about vampires being born vs. bitten. I also like that there are some vampires who don't like the taste of human blood, which is rare in vampire novels. The main girl is plucky, if a little whiny. However, the spelling and grammar put me off in some places, and the story itself failed to engage me. I did at least finish the book, but I didn't like the protagonist, so I definitely won't be reading the other books in the series.

The plot is filled with cliff hangers, mysteries, and problems that keep replenishing every time another is knocked down. I had wanted to stop reading it, but every time the thought crossed my mind I would tell myself, "a couple minuites won't hurt..." or, "just this sentence..." with this book a minute turned into an hour, and a sentence turned into a chapter... All in all, I think this is a book that practically anyone would enjoy, excluding the last cliff hanger, that would make anyone hate the end...

About the author

Dale Mayer is a USA Today bestselling author who writes for the young, the old and those in-between. Some of her books are hot, some are sweet. Some will keep you up at night with a light on to keep the boogie man away and some you’ll want to cuddle close. She’s long given up on trying to fit a specific genre. Instead she honors the stories that come to her – and some of them are crazy, break all the rules and cross multiple genres! And that’s okay too. There is one guarantee with each book – it will be a great read – each and every time.
