The first days of using the monitor you would realize how much your coding workflow and tools are horizontally oriented. Your IDE will be clunky "as is" and requires a lot of adjustments. 9 times out of 10 I felt more comfortable reconnecting to the ultrawide.
The other problem is the height. There is no good way to position it. You are either craning your neck or sitting higher than normal to see the top of the screen. But then the bottom of the screen is too far and you have to noticeably look down and lean into the desk to see the bottom of the screen.
The opposite happens if you optimize viewing for the bottom of the screen. The top of the screen becomes too far away and you need to look up, lean in, and extend your neck ever so slightly.
Granted we are talking about millimeters, but this is not required on curved ultrawide. I can scan on the ultrawide without any noticeable effort and my head is not moving around as much as I do when using this screen.
This screen seems like it was created for Windows. Where your active areas (menus and docks) are colocated. On the mac, your menu bar is at the top. The dock is at the bottom so there is no good way to use this display with the mac. 90% of you need to optimize for top-of-screen viewing because that is where your app menu bar is.
Magnet (screen layout manager) helps a bit.
I tried the dual-up wit two outputs from the mac and enabled top and bottom of the screen layout. This is probably how it's meant to be used when on the mac. It kinda word, but not optimal, each time I cross the horizontal, I'd trigger the (auto-hidden) dock.
It's been several weeks. I can say I am "used" to it, but it is not a productivity booster as I thought. I still prefer my ultrawide and am more productive on it. The dual up is not used as often as I would like.
As a technological marvel. it is very high quality. The monitor arm, the DPI, and the light weightiness are unbelievable. As a coder monitor, it is not optimal.
I mounted them on retractable arms to clear desk space, and set them into full screen mode as the work laptop only supports two external monitors (my personal Macbook, also new, is an M3 Max and supports 4). The monitors as well as a couple of other devices are hooked up to a CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock, and the Macbook is hooked to the Dock with a single Thunderbolt 4 cable, which provides access to all devices as well as power the laptop via the CalDigit dock.
I do want to mention that I am a software engineer, and write code for a living, so having high quality monitors to save my poor tired eyes is a must.
I am loving this setup! I keep Slack open on my Laptop screen, keep two web browsers open on one monitor and my IDE in full screen mode on the other. The eye fatigue is all but gone, which is awesome, the monitors are cool and don't put off alot of heat (which was not the case with the ones I have retired), and all of the cable are now gone off my desktop.
(A side node, the Macbook Pro M3 Pro is ULTRA QUIET, I don't think I've heard the fans kick in a single time since I set all this up).
Having the monitors on the retractable arms not only frees up desk space, it allows me to adjust the monitors so that they are conducive to coding and switching focus from the IDE to the browsers and back without alot of extra motion.
Did I mention that the resolution is fantastic? It is.
I have also put them in dual screen mode hooked up to my personal Macbook Pro, and that works well, switching between modes is super easy. The monitor with the browsers I put in dual screen mode but the one that displays my IDE I keep as a single screen.
Highly recommend, worth the investment, this set up should do me for a few years to come, and my eyes are thanking me!
Not the smallest pixels on the planet, smaller than my eyes resolve, so good enough.
If you use progressive lens bifocals, you may not be happy. I have a set of single vision lenses made at my computer distance and use those.
Come on quickly, doesn't do stupid things. Audio is, let's say "usable". Good enough for beeps and alerts, and if I want music or a longer educational video I switch up to something more expensive than the whole monitor anyway. Comes with all the cables you might need! That's refreshing these days.
I think this review is on the one that sits on a stand. I also got the one with the clamp on swivel arm which is slightly more expensive, but that arm is a work of art! It just couldn't be attached to my one desk. You will need about 3" of overhang to clamp the clamp. But like I said, this is the one with a more traditional stand and it is fabulous too.
Top reviews from other countries
Resolution issues that were previously stated looks like they’re fixed, I’m able to use both this monitor (2560*2880) and a 4K at the same time on native resolution.
This monitor allows me to:
1. See more code than I normally could even compared to my 4K
2. Use my work computer with dual monitor and still use my Mac on the top part of the screen (or bottom if you want) and vice versa
3. Have my work computer on the bottom, video game console on the top and Mac on my other monitor at the same time for those lazy days.
Only thing I’d say to watch for is to make sure your laptop has a dedicated video card. My work laptop doesn’t and it barely runs both monitors and the hugest frame rate I can get out of it is 30(yuck) but that’s not a problem with the monitor itself.
I also accidentally bought the one without the ergo arm, so watch out for that
There are some minor issues that LG will hopefully improve on if they decide to produce a follow-up: the design of the stand arm makes it quite annoying to get the display perfectly level (but it stays quite well, so that's mostly a one-time frustration), the auto-sleep/blanking behaviour is too trigger happy and not fast enough to recover (I do a lot of switching between inputs and rebooting, so most people might never notice this), the top and side bezels are super skinny but there's a quarter inch of empty display on those edges which sort of ruins the effect, I'm concerned about the lifespan of the single input/menu/control nub, the alleged "built-in KVM" is a sad joke, and some of the clever features, like dual-display mode, are compromised by requiring LG software *with network access* to work.
That list may seem fairly negative, but again, the advantages far outweigh the problems, and my 5-star ratings stands as my overall impression after a couple of months of daily use.
The monitor is not for competitive or immersive gameplay, but casual or story games it gets the job done with flying colors (pun intended, the colors are amazing out of the box). The double simultaneous inputs from 2 devices work like a marvel as well.
The arm is solid, feels great and effortless, though it doesn't go as high as I'd like, but nothing a piece if wood can't fix.
I went from having 3 screens to 1 and I don't mind at all. Just make sure that if you're on windows, to use fancy zones for a more optimal multitasking environment.
