NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This fresh, uplifting book is filled with ideas for improving our organizations and our lives.”—Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and host of the podcast WorkLife

“With his characteristic blend of academic rigor and twinkle in the eye, Shawn Achor will change your view of happiness, of reality—and of yourself.”—Susan Cain, New York Times bestselling author of Quiet and Bittersweet

Why are some people able to make positive change while others remain the same?

In his international bestseller,
The Happiness Advantage, Harvard-trained researcher Shawn Achor described why happiness is the precursor to greater success. Before Happiness is about what comes before both. Because before we can be happy or successful, we need to first develop the ability to see that positive change is possible. Only once we learn to see the world through a more positive lens can we summon all our motivation, emotion, and intelligence to achieve our personal and professional goals.

In
Before Happiness, Achor reveals five actionable, proven strategies for changing our lens to positive:

The Most Valuable Reality: See a broader range of ideas and solutions by changing the details on which your brain chooses to focus
Success Mapping: Set goals oriented around the things in life that matter to you most, whether career advancement or family or making a difference in the world
The X-spot: Use success accelerants to propel you more quickly towards those goals, whether finishing a marathon, reaching a sales target, learning a language, or losing ten pounds
Noise-Canceling: Boost the signal pointing you to opportunities and possibilities that others miss
Positive Inception: Transfer these skills to your team, your employees, and everyone around you

By mastering these strategies, you’ll create a renewable source of positivity, motivation, and engagement that will allow you to reach your fullest potential in everything you do.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* There have been many books published on happiness, an elusive goal for many of us. And there will be many more added to shelves after Achor’s second book (the first being The Happiness Advantage, 2010). Yet, truly, there was no primer on how to factually, practically achieve positive genius until this former Harvard researcher zeroed in. The concept is fairly simple: change is possible only when we link our lives to others. That positivity, in turn, results from applying five factors to change your reality: (1) choose the most valuable reality, (2) map your meaning markets, (3) find the x-spot, (4) cancel the noise, and (5) create positive inception. In layperson speak, consider these points: do something prosocial—i.e., for others—and shift your attitude. Use a treasure map, a way to chart your success path. Keep your eyes on the beach, not the rocks. Exercise—to eliminate noise and distractions from your life. And use humor everywhere. Every one of his suggestions is accompanied by personal anecdotes, others’ stories, psychological research, and just plain facts and figures. It’s an extraordinarily compelling argument to actively work on changing mindsets. --Barbara Jacobs

“Shawn Achor is a positive genius who is capable of taking complex academic research and making it come to life in companies and schools across the globe.”
—Tony Hsieh, bestselling author of Delivering Happiness and former CEO of Zappos, Inc.

“In
Before Happiness, Shawn Achor provides simple, scientifically sound strategies built around three key factors most of us undervalue: where we choose to put our attention, how much social support we build into our lives, and whether we view stress as a challenge rather than a threat.”—Tony Schwartz, bestselling author of The Power of Full Engagement and Be Excellent at Anything

“Read this book before you buy any other self-improvement title. For anyone who wants to find more meaning, achievement, and joy in life, this is the single best place to start.”
—Tom Rath, bestselling author of StrengthsFinder 2.0 and Eat Move Sleep

“Achor infuses
Before Happiness with empirical evidence, anecdotes and studies showing that even a simple adjustment in thinking impacts our outlook and how we’re perceived. . . . The book offers insights and ideas for adjusting your angle of vision so you open the door to happiness and success.”Success

“A must-read.”

This book is REAL. Pithy, unique, and humor sprinkled with scientific vigor.

There have been many recipes for happiness and success, but Achor is the first one to tell you WHY you need to harness hope and a can-do attitude first. Why it is imperative before tackling goal-setting. Next, he enlightens you with scientifically proven ingredients and step-by-step instructions how to do it. How you dive into your personal motivational reservoir. How to get your emotional mojo moving, focus your intelligence, and engage your values to get what you want in life.

Yes, this takes work. But in a cool, clear writing style, Achor's "Before Happiness" charms. It is very easy to comprehend, despite its scientific mettle. He maps out how you begin with an honest internal look/see. After you explore your psyche, you ascertain what is hindering your positivity. Then he gives you a crisp recipe for putting frosting on your life's experiential cake.

Achor teaches you how to focus your microscope until you hone in on what is blocking your journey to happiness/success reality. To explore your beliefs then employ 5 strategies (and many valuable sub-strategies) to clear your way to personal and professional success. In his constellation of brilliant success tips, the star that shines brightest to me was flexibility. You are constantly morphing. The closer you PERCEIVE success to be, the more successful you become.

I enjoyed reviewing the arena of social support, as he wrote in his previous book, "The Happiness Advantage". How one of the greatest predictors of positive genius is providing social support to OTHERS. Our own happiness and meaning absolutely need to include others. Instead of whining about your job or life, do something in service of someone else. Watch your happiness and fulfillment soar.

Achor tells it like it is. I loved his story-telling format. I could feel his gritty perseverance. His poignant self-disclosure, how he suffered depression when he was studying at Harvard, was an eye-opener. His personal anecdotes add huge value. He walks his happiness talk.

This windfall of fascinating learning is a must read. A+.

In this book, Shawn Achor provides convincing, actionable advice for anyone seeking to both find happiness for themselves and to influence others in positive ways. I will be aiming to be more of a “positive genius” as a result of his advice. I hope that others will read this book and do the same.

Let me preface this review by saying I am not a good non-fiction/self-help reader. Shawn Achor is brilliant and I love his presentations...I’ve used his ideas with my students with great success. This book is good, but I’m just having the hardest time getting through it. The things I like about the author in person (his stories and humor) are just not translating well to written form (OMG. Just get to the point already). I blame this solely on me, though. I am NOT patient nor good at reading anything I feel required to read (I picked this book as my “proof” of working toward my professional/teacher review goal). I’ve really had to force myself to read it and I couldn’t really tell you what I’ve read (except that the SAT is only accurate in predicting future success 15% of the time - take that College Board!). I’m about 1/3 of the way through the book (after 8 months) and I haven’t even gotten to the “how to” portion yet. I’m going to try & finish before the end of the school year, so I can be compliant with my yearly review, but it won’t be easy. Mr. Achor, if you ever read this, I apologize! I truly wanted to love it, but I’m just too picky/spoiled/busy to read anything that isn’t a murder mystery.

Goes in my top 5 non-fiction books of all time. Thanks Shawn, for this and also the Open University lecture. Absolutely brilliant, and voices what I've felt (I suspect many people have) for many years of my life. Brilliant to see positive psychology being worked out thoroughly, and the idea that happiness needs a clear BASE, a definite viewpoint, is one that I've noticed and tried to express and use as a guide for the majority of my life. How incredible to read someone else express it. Thank you, and a big thumbs up - this book is for those interested in increasing their general happiness, healing and/or even recovering from trauma. Honestly, one of the best buys of my life.

Practical strategies blended with aspiration to live a more inspired and energized life for yourself and those you care about. Needed voice in a time of chaos, confusion, and ugliness in our society. Let’s make these changes and collectively create a better world for all of us.

Shawn Achor is a brilliant guy. His research and work hold both an insightful and refreshing view of the world. I'm a fairly optomistic and hopeful person. His book provided me with an even greater roadmap to a more productive and positive way of life, both at home and in the workplace. Shawn's teachings have inspired me to work on being a "positive genius". There has already been some very real differences in my family life. I'd recommend this book to everyone. It can only improve your life. Mr. Achor also has a wonderful sense of humor. If you aren't sure, just watch his TED Talks.
