This has turned out to be very true and I would recommend this soundbar for anyone, especially if you already own an LG tv as at that point it's basically plug and play. The sound quality is great, the base is really meaty and voices are far more crisp. It's also got some great bluetooth and wifi functionality, I mainly use the wifi functionality when I connected it to Spotify on my phone.
After three months of use, I'd say the price was well worth it for an elevated experience.
Per my excitement I ventured down the rabbit hole of troubleshooting with no results. I am still waiting to hear something from LGs product/warranty support.
The soundbar would kill the 5 Ghz wireless signal within about 10-12 feet radius from the sound bar. Kids would complain that they can’t Netflix in the living room when this sound bar was on, not good.
If LG is reading this, the simple solution is to allow a hardwire connection to subwoofer. Also allow users to turn off the Bluetooth and Wifi on the soundbar if they run into connectivity issues.
For the actual LG Soundbar sound quality, I am not an audiophile, but for me the LG SP8YA 3.1.2 overall sound was just okay. I was able to download the LG soundbar app on my iPhone to connect the WiFi. It initially didn’t work and I could not connect to soundbar via the app. I tried it again after 30 minutes and it connected. When I turned on the TV and sound bar, I saw a message that said “B-Update”, which I assume was an automatic firmware update which took about 10-15 minutes to download. After that I ran the Room calibration tool. I used my Sony TV Google TV app to watch Disney+ and tested it on Avengers movie. It sounded alright, not great and not bad. Better than the TV speaker and had some bass. The bass was just okay, I could feel it in big action sequence, but it was not always there in all scenes. The volume control was weird too, it would only go from 0 - 40, but my Sony TV goes from 1 to 100. So it would skip ever 2 to 3 numbers when you move the volume up and down.
I also noticed a slight lip sync issue, like .1 second delay. This was more noticeable when watching cartoons when you can see the lips move and sound comes out .1 seconds later. When watching movies l, I did start to notice the lip sync issue, but it was less noticeable. This lip sync issue was the 2nd deal breaker for me.
The LED screen always on is front was a little distracting while watching movies. It should turn off after 15 seconds, or at least have the option in LG app to do that.
I have to return this LG soundbar (and not buy any LG soundbars for now), because my 5 Ghz wireless network is more important than any soundbar. I use my 5 Ghz Wifi for work and streaming content.
I have tried other sound bars like the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) soundbar for $450. The overall sound was good and the dialog was clear, but no bass. You really need the subwoofer for watching movies, it’s not optional. Even my wife said Sonos Beam sounded alright but had no bass. I can’t justify paying $750 for a Sonos Sub, when the Beam was $450 (total cost of $1200 for the system without surround speakers). I really cannot justify spending more for my audio equipment than my TV, and this is for our bedroom, not a dedicated home theater setup.
I went to search for Soundbars and interference with Wifi signals and found that there are a lot of issues with most sound bars and Wifi signals. I have read a lot of sound bar reviews and someone always complains about wireless subwoofer would stop syncing to Soundbar or go out sporadically. Now I am wondering if that has to do with Wifi interference (or microwave interference), maybe from neighbor’s new Wifi setup. I went to look for a sound bars that had a wired subwoofer, but all the new sound bars come with wireless subwoofers. My wife doesn’t want a receiver and bunch of speaker wire cables in the bedroom, so I am back in search for a 3.1 sound bar for under $500-$800 that just works. If I can’t find one, then my last alternative is to get a receiver and small Klipsch 5.1 reference speakers for around $800.
