Duke Evans didn’t expect to interrupt a beautiful woman in a staring contest with a bison on his favorite hiking trail. He also didn’t expect to see her again after rescuing her from the surly beast. As the sheriff in Calamity, Montana, he’s had his fair share of surprises but none as pleasant as pulling over a shiny black car and finding his mysterious hiking companion behind the wheel.

Only, she lied to Duke. She gave him a name as fake as her hair color. According to her driver’s license, her real name is Lucy Ross, the famous country music singer whose sudden disappearance has been a hot topic in the media over the past two weeks.

He’s not sure why Lucy lied about her identity or why she’s in Calamity. And she’s not talking. Instead, she offers him a bribe to keep her secret.

But Duke doesn’t want her money. He wants to know why this woman is on the run. And as long as the star shines on his badge, he’s going to find out.

In public, you’re Jade. But behind closed doors, you’re—”
“Lucy?” she breathed.
I shook my head. “Mine.”

I have a love affair with all things Devney Perry, so when I saw she's releasing a new series under a pen name, I was beyond thrilled. I live for her small town romances. The Bribe was a sweet romance with a swoony hero and a country singer in hiding set in the charming town of Calamity and plenty of amazing secondary characters.
I was a woman running through a storm, searching for a haven against the onslaught of rain.

Lucy is a famous country singer that left her entire life behind in Nashville to disappear as Jade in Calamity. She first runs into Duke when he rescues her and her BFF on a hiking trail. She never expects to run into the handsome stranger again, especially not as the sheriff in the small town where she's trying to hide. And this sheriff won't let her hide and is determined to get her every secret.

Duke was....*swoony sigh*. Gosh. This man was everything. I love me an alphahole, but every now and then a girl needs a dose of a good guy, and Duke hit the spot just right. The man is protective, loyal, and persistent. He's determined to get all of Jade's secrets, even if he has to pretend to take a bribe to keep them. The sparks between these two were instant and potent. I loved the tension between them as much as I loved their instant connection. There's a dash of suspense that's thrown in that helped spice things up a little which really comes to a head at the end.

Jade and Duke's romance wasn't full of angst. It wasn't easy either but there were no games, no stupid misunderstandings. It was just so immensely satisfying watching these two fall in love. Duke, the quintessential nice guy, and Lucy the famous singer just made sense together. The Bribe was a butterflies in your tummy sort of romance that you finish with a smile on your face. I love me some angst, but I never missed it here. The suspense gave it just the right amount of zing that the story needed. And the preview of the next book? I die for it. DIE FOR IT. I can't wait for Everly's book next.

The Bribe is book one in the Calamity Montana series by Devney Perry writing as Willa Nash. This is my very first book by this author and you guys! I...AM...IN...LOVE!!! I first noticed a book later in this series and some members of my book group strongly urged me to go back and start at the beginning. They assured me I was going to fall in love. THEY WERE RIGHT!!

Twenty eight year old Jade Morgan is hiking with her life long best friend, Everly when they are literally stopped in their tracks by a herd of bison that refuse to move. They are rescued by another hiker, the very good looking Duke. Even though they seemed to share an immediate spark, when they get to the end of the trail, Duke departs in his own truck and Jade and Everly in theirs. Jade and Everly are splitting up the next morning as well, Everly on her way back to Nashville, and Jade is on to start a new life in Calamity, Montana.

“There was just something about him that felt safe. Real. Honest.”

Duke Evans is thirty three years old and is the sheriff of Calamity. He loves this tiny town and he loves his job. He doesn’t usually stop speeders but when the fancy black car whizzed by, he couldn’t ignore it. He was just as shocked as the occupant was when they saw each other. His new and beautiful hiking friend. But when he asked for her driver’s license, he realized her name wasn’t Jade at all but Lucy Ross, the famous country singer that has been missing from Nashville. Lucy is beside herself with anxiety that he will reveal her true identity but she’s not willing to tell him why. That same spark is still there between them. But as the sheriff, he also needs to know what this woman is running from. He’s a patient man. He’ll give her the space she needs to tell him. But while he’s waiting, maybe they can get to know each other a little better.

These two quickly become inseparable and Lucy finds that small town life is just what she needed. It’s healing and peaceful. And with Duke she finds that connection she never had with anyone before. He’s her person. But the reason she fled to Calamity is still out there and Duke is determined to help her. At the same time, Lucy is settling more and more into Calamity. She knows this is where she was always meant to be, here with Duke.

This book completely took over my world for the couple of days I was reading it. I could not put it down. The writing was beautiful, the connection between the two characters so strong I couldn’t stop thinking about them, even when I wasn’t reading. The ending was a surprise. I loved every single thing about this book. There was a short bonus epilogue you can download and it was the perfect little bit of icing on the Calamity cake. I wish I could give this even more stars. The next book in the series is a little novella, The Booty, available from her newsletter. I promptly downloaded it and will be reading it soon.

“You’ll never be alone. As long as there is a beat in my heart and breath in my lungs, you’ll never be alone.”

Book: The Bribe
Author: Devney Perry
Type: Standalone; #1 in 'Calamity Montana'.
POV: First Person - Dual
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Rating: 4 Stars!

Age: Lucy - 28; Duke - 33.

Triggers:

We had hundreds of Calamity events in our future. Of nights together, sharing moments under the stars. There’d been a lot of moments lately. I’d only be satisfied with a lifetime more. She was special and I wasn’t letting her go.

How does Devney Perry continue to blow my mind with her romances? From The Birthday List and Letters to Molly to Tattered, she continues to make me fall in love with her characters. Her writing style is so beautiful and the words just flows across each page; truly an amazing author. I fell in author-lust with her when I read The Birthday List and I will forever be a fan after that. It is still my favorite book from her and I believe nothing can top that just because it was so heartbreaking. This one is a close second. The Bribe was everything I expected from her and more. All characters, main and secondary, were fleshed-out and endearing and not once did I ever get fed up with any of them.

Never in my life had I longed to be with a person the way I craved Duke’s presence. I’d take him every minute of every day.

I absolutely loved Lucy's character, even when she was being a bit of a pessimist but that's given knowing what she went through (the dog!). The connection that Lucy and Duke started to form made my heart skip a beat, it was simply beautiful. I did love Lucy, but I have to say that it was Duke that shined the brightest in this book. What can I say, I have a thing for hot guys in uniforms carrying guns. Duke was strong, loyal, passionate, caring and everything you can wish for. The plot was very interesting and captivating with a bit of mystery and suspense thrown in. The story was really cute with a little dark fairytale-like quality to it. I especially loved the small town location and I wanted more of Cheddar.

And for the next book, we have (brace yourself):
Hot dad + ex-convict + tortured artist + marriage of convenience? = *my demon voice* Where is it?!

I loved this man with my entire being. If that meant sacrificing my superstar career so he could stay here, where he belonged and was happy, then I’d make that choice. I’d choose him every day, because it didn’t really feel like a sacrifice.

If you’re looking for a passion filled romance that’s sexy, swoony, full of alpha goodness and will give you the feels AND contains a little dark content, The Bribe is one you need to check out.

The Bribe is the first book in Willa Nash’s (Devney Perry’s pen name) Calamity Montana series. It’s about country singer Lucy Ross who is getting away from her real life for a very specific reason. No one in small town Montana knows who she is. To them, she’s Jade, Calamity’s newest resident. But Duke, the town sheriff, knows exactly who she is.

I love when the angst/drama in the books I read have nothing to do with the main couple. I mean, I know there needs to be conflict and I love a good angsty book, but sometimes it’s nice when that angst isn’t with the romance itself. Once Lucy and Duke fell for each other, I never questioned if it would work out, I just knew it would. And I loved that.

This book made me smile, was super swoony, and had a bit of a mystery aspect to it. I enjoyed this one so much and the way the second book got set up at the end… eek! I’m definitely going to be reading more in this Calamity Montana series!

The Bribe is the first book in the Calamity Montana Series. A sweet read set in a small town, Ms. Nash offers a contemporary romance with passion and a lot of heart! Duke Evans is the sheriff in Calamity, Montana. When he accidentally stumbles upon a beautiful woman and her best friend stranded on a hiking trip he is quite taken but knows he will never see her again. However, when Lucy lands directly in the Sheriff's path once again, he knows this time he has to find out who she is and what her story is! Lucy is just looking for a place to lay low for a while. The prospect of meeting a good man that would sweep her off of her feet was never in the plans and yet, Duke is exactly what she needs.

"Day by day, those broken shards were knitting together, forming a new me."
Told in multiple POV, The Bribe is a sweet read with passion, intrigue, and some good old fashioned small-town drama. The romance between Duke and Lucy is a perfect blend of sweetness! Although Lucy is going through a great deal of drama, Duke is kind and caring and stands by her side through it all.
"Whoever you need to be, I love you."
Overall, The Bribe would appeal to contemporary romance fans who enjoy a small-town setting with a strong hero and a sassy heroine. This was my first read by Willa Nash and I can guarantee it will not be my last. I look forward to more of the shenanigans in Calamity Montana!

This book really said: I do not know what is going on, so let's add another plot twist to confuse it even more.

How do I even start...
Oh I know, how about with the fact that Lucy is really trying to be Hannah Montana by switching her hair colour and thinking no one would recognise her.
Little reality check: everyone would recognise you.

As much as I had to roll my eyes at that plot line with the hair colour making the super famous singe unrecognisable, I think it is the least bad plot of the story.

Firstly, the couple had zero chemistry. There was instant sexual attraction and the love confession happened way to early into the book. Overall I am confused where the attraction came from because there was nothing.
Secondly, the plot was messy. From the living situation, to Lucy's reasons to why she had to move to Montana from Texas, nothing fit together because the plot was too full.

I think I would have liked if Lucy's backstory had made more sense. The reveal was so boring I just kind of sat on my bed and stared into the unknown when everything was revealed because wth was that?
There could have been amazing betrayal tropes in here but instead the weirdest ending was picked that totally ruined any tension the plot could have had.

I also think that the plot lines of the side characters were extremely awful especially Savannah's.
For this I have to go into spoilers so if you want to read this book, don't continue reading.

Duke used to date a woman that had a son called Travis and he is basically like a son to him. Travis clearly has his own issues and apparently both of the adults in his life give little to no shit about him because of how they treated him in the book.
Yet what was even worse was the involvement of Savannah and Hux. Savannah is Hux's daughter but she lives with her mother April and her abusive stepfather.
Nowwwwwww Duke knows this or at least has assumptions about what the stepfather does and somehow decides to do absolutely nothing.
HUH???
You are the fucking sheriff and are telling me that you are going to just do nothing even though you think you know what happens in their house based on what Travis has told you and how Savannah acts???

I honestly do not care that they were only assumptions but he as the sheriff with his powers could have done something but decides to do nothing.
I fucking hated this so much I cannot beginn to describe the anger I felt when he said he wasn't going to do anything "because of the law".
Mister... you have been breaking the law to fuck Lucy Ross since she was using a false name but you let family abuse "slide" because you have to listen to the law?

Wow I hate you.

This was so cute! I do think it was a bit insta-lovey, which is why I only gave it four stars, but I really enjoyed how the heroine was a famous country singer hiding out from a stalker in a small town. I did enjoy how she had an instant attraction to our hero, who was also a local sheriff. I just wanted a little bit more angst and pining in the story before they got together. But since they got together so quickly, we did get to have a bit of romantic suspense to keep us on our toes at the end. While the villain did feel a bit over the top, I enjoyed how it brought certain characters together and set us up perfectly for the next book, which I can't wait to read!

I did really enjoy the unique relationship the hero had with his ex's son. While this isn't a single parent romance, it had those vibes because he had such a prominent role in that boy's life. He definitely had to be careful about his relationship with the heroine and how that would affect his relationship with his ex's son. The small town atmosphere was spot on and I'm excited to come back to Calamity soon!

A sweet and partially suspenseful romance read.

Lucy was a very famous singer who moved to Calamity under a different name, for her own reasons. She encountered Duke, the town’s sheriff, and the attraction between them was mutual.

Although it was very well written, my engagement to the story had ups and downs. The development was slightly lacking and there were too many inner thoughts.

I finished it but was not thrilled.
The cover was beautiful but, for me, farfetched and mismatched for the specific story...

As I expected, Devney Perry's debut in Kindle Unlimited as Willa Nash was an amazing read and a wonderful start to her new series. Now, after reading quite a lot of her books, I have to say I always know where to go if I want an addicting, sweet and sexy small-town romance. Willa Nash's first novel is no exception, it was the start of my love for Calamity and its residents. Get ready to fall in love with Duke, Lucy and the rest of the amazing crew in this charming community.

As I said, The Bribe is Willa Nash's debut novel and it's the first in a new series called Calamity Montana. In this first installment we get the love story between Duke Evans (Calamity's handsome and intriguing sheriff) and Lucy Ross (a famous country singer using a fake name to stay hidden in Duke's small town). Lucy is tired of her life, she has gone through a lot in the past years and she needs a place to restart her journey. She also has a lot of secrets. Enter Duke. He discovers Lucy's fake identity from the very first moment and he is not happy about Calamity having a star singer hidden. But sparks fly between these two and it's impossible to not act on it.

Lucy Ross—Jade Morgan—was a mystery I was going to solve.

I have to say, The Bribe is one of the sexiest books I've read by this author (Devney/Willa). The chemistry between Duke and Lucy is very palpable from the first time they lay eyes on each other and I loved their back and forth (shown from the very first chapter). They share a beautiful connection and it's so strong that they both realize pretty soon they haven't felt this for anyone else and probably never will. I loved them both as individuals and as a couple. Duke is so protective, so sexy and just an all over amazing hero. Lucy is sweet and strong and I loved how she enjoys her new heaven with her Sheriff.

“In public, you’re Jade. But behind closed doors, you’re—”
“Lucy?” she breathed.
I shook my head. “Mine.”

But not everything is hearts and flowers for these two. Both of them have situations in their lives that do not help their want to be with each other. There is drama, some suspense and the major fact that Lucy is not being herself completely and using a fake name. Calamity and Duke are a breath of fresh air for her and she falls head over heels in love with her new life with Duke. Things are definitely not the easiest but, in the end, everything happens for a reason and their happy ending is so worthy to read and very much deserved.

The shelter I’d craved for years was right here in his arms.

Therefore, I am rating The Bribe with 4 STARS because, to me, it was the perfect start to a new series from Willa Nash. I already love Duke and Lucy and the new characters introduced from Calamity. I literally cannot wait to read the second book in the series (I am dying for it after reading the blurb at the end of this book!!). If you enjoy small-town romances and Devney Perry's writing, you should 100% check out this new book/series using her alter ego, Willa Nash. I am sure we will get amazing stories from her too and I am ready for all of them!

When it comes to small town romance Devney Perry is the one for me. I just love her books.
There is no misunderstanding, no miscommunication, no nonsense drama , the story is fast paced and flows easily.

This new series is set in Calamity, Montana. The romance revolves around Duke, the sexy sheriff of Calamity and Jade Morgan ( Lucy Ross) a famous country music singer that ran away from her problems in Nashville and took another identity in the small town.

Duke learns from the beginning who she is and wants to know everything about the woman that makes his heart beat faster. Lucy just wants to keep her secret close, so she offers Duke a bribe in exchange of his silence. Will he take the bribe?

They have such a steamy relationship, both know exactly what they want ( eachother) and go for it no nonsense bullshit. Duke is possessive and controlling but not in an overbearing way.He is just swoon worthy hero. Lucy is very likable, kind and honest person, a heroine that doesn't make stupid decision, she thinks the acts.(thank God)

When Lucy's troubles catch up with her, Duke will do anything in his power to protect the woman he fell in love with.

Loved the first book in this series, and there is a new cast of charaters that awaits their own books.

No one does small town romance better than Devney Perry, make that Willa Nash, as they are one and the same! Ms. Nash gives us the same amazing writing, characters, heart, laughter, and drama all wrapped up in a story that kept me turning pages until the very end.

I tend to be all about the hero but this author has a talent for making me fall in love with her heroines and she did it once more. With her need to protect, her own struggle to embrace who she was and her early uncertainty about the hero, this heroine quickly had me cheering for her.

Pin on deputy holt

The hero here was everything I love. His determination to get to the bottom of what was going on with the heroine even as he “accepted” the bribe had me waiting for the other shoe to drop when she realized what his intentions were. Add in his commitment to a young boy and his overall protective nature and I was a goner. Oh yeah, and the name. How could you not love a hero with the name Duke?

This started out fast and never slowed down. With a chemistry between the hero and heroine that rivals that of anything I’ve ever read, additional characters that I was envisioning in their own books, and drama that had me biting my nails, this book is one I will definitely be recommending.

* * * * Spoiler Free- A Quick Review
I can tell from the start if a book is going to click with me. If the beginning captures my imagination and I feel like I care about what happens next, then I am all in. Willa Nash accomplished that task and this was a very enjoyable read.
Willa Nash is USA Today Bestselling Author Devney Perry’s alter ego

You have a very famous country music star who decided to take her career and life back from all the people who had been managing it and hide out in Calamity, Montana. She has been front and center for most of her life and she is wanting to just be hidden away from social media, her music label, managers, and anyone else. Hair dye, contact lenses, a phony name reflect how serious she is about all of this.

So when she runs into a hunky, charming Sheriff when lost on a trail with a bison deciding if she would make a tasty dinner, she was thrilled to have him help her. They talked, there was a moment between them but to still be the woman hiding, she gave this man who seems so right, her phony name.

Our sheriff thought the woman on the trail was something else...like sunshine warming him. He kicked himself for not getting her phone number but also reminded himself he was to stay focused on his town. This all goes out the window when our gal is speeding down the road and he pulls her over.

Now we have a problem because the singer really needs to remain in hiding and she knows the minute she hands over her license, the sheriff will know who she is and her cover will be blown.

A decision is made, an offer for silence and the result is the shock of her life. It doesn't add up for her, this sheriff doesn't seem like the type to take a bribe so he will not reveal she is here. Disappointment was what she felt.

Little did she know, he had no interest in a bribe, he would never want that. No, he wants to know what is up and as the days go by, these two end up having more happening than this so called bribe.

This was an enjoyable read. There was little angst, lots of swoons, and a little suspense. The couple worked well, I cared and fell hard for them, and Calamity, Montana. The good news is another book is on its way.

I am smiling so big guys I absolutely loved this book. I am so obsessed with this book it’s insane. Willa Nash/Devney Perry knows how to do it for me every time and she’s slowly climbing up to my Insta by author list. I am obsessed with her work so far I have only buy three of her books and I’m gonna keep devouring them. This story is phenomenal. I absolutely love the elements of mystery as well as the romance and honestly the plot is so interesting. I realize with a lot of her stories the plot is extremely easy to follow and very intriguing enough to the point where you care about the plot just as much as you care about the romance or even more. I love the elements that are small town centered as well as the personality bits we get in between every piece of dialogue. I love the contributions of the side characters and I just love everything this book has to entail. I absolutely adore Lucy and Duke I love them to death, their story is phenomenal I love the way their relationship grew and I just love the way the story progressed. I recommend this book in tenfold please go read it!

A lovely small town romance focusing on country singer and star Lucy Ross who is trying to escape her shackles and a stalker and hot Duke Evans, the sheriff of small town Calamity in Montana.

This had me smiling a fair bit, especially at the start, found myself sinking into it and just enjoying.

Overall this was a lovely surprise, a book I can see myself re-reading this and reading the next book in the series.

Dual POV works really well.

a bit insta-lovey, but—be it Devney Perry or her pen name Willa Nash—shes got the small town charms & feel good romance in the bag.

the h is a famous country singer trying to hide her identity and keep a low profile in Calamity. meanwhile, the H is the beloved sheriff of said town. yes, i love me some men in uniforms alpha heroes. 😍 the h was a bit cagey at the beginning, and i liked how the H was persistent to pry open her secrets. once he knew about her situation, he went all protective mode on her, which was so sweet of him. he also voluntarily signed himself up to be a father figure to the son of his ex girlfriend. he was just such a protector. im wondering why he didnt do more to help his sons girl friend (who lived in an abusive household) though. maybe we’ll see that more in the following books, which im looking forward to reading as im definitely intrigued by some of the side characters introduced here.

i enjoyed the ‘damsel in distress’ romance, and the suspense kept me engaged (even though the plot twist left me scratching my head).

“In public, you’re Jade. But behind closed doors, you’re—”
“Lucy?” she breathed.
I shook my head. “Mine.”

Not going to lie each and every Devney Perry (even is shes Willa Nash in this case) book I read just gets better and better.

It's so weird to me that she writes a lot of things I typically don't like. A lot of insta- love and overly dramatic small towns with too many kidnappings and stalkers.
BUT IT JUST WORKS. I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Stumbling across a beautiful woman on a hiking trail in need of a little bit of saving Duke Evans thinks he will never see her again. Until he pulls over a speeding car and learns not only is she moving to his small town of Calamity, she isn't who she says she is. Lucy Ross, a famous country singer disusing herself as Jade Morgan is desperate to keep her identity a secret and Duke is determined to find out why.

Wasn't surprised that I really enjoyed this book. A small town romance with some added drama of a stalker. Sometimes just really hits the spot. The plot was intriguing and the story extended well beyond the romance. Yes the couple gets together pretty early on but I genuinely don't even care because there is still plenty to keep you hooked throughout. The romance itself worked really well I adored Duke and Lucy and the way they were together, they were the absolute cutest. I loved the cast of characters we are introduced to in the small town. I love small town romances and that is the reason why I love there being a tight knit group of people who all care about each other.

I can't wait for more out of this series. The characters she writes are always rich and well fleshed out I get so invested. So I'm super excited for Everly and Hux's book!!

4 stars!!!

This was a surprisingly good and enjoyable read. I didn't expected to liked it at all especially because it was light and easy read-which for the most part have the tendency to bore me to death. First, because the authors of this book are new to me- I haven't got a clue about their writing style but to my pure delight they are good. The main characters were interesting too, their chemistry was great, glad that they were not annoying because that's the last thing I need right now. The plot was interesting from the start until the end.

I liked it a lot, but still it didn't gave me the wow-factor I' looking for to give a book a five star rating. Also, I will definitely read the next book in this series. So far, so good. Can't wait to read Ev and Hux's story...

Good book but lacked any tension or angst. The villain story line was resolved and wrapped up in a way that didn’t allow the reader to follow along. It was a character who wasn’t even in the story and we only met when they revealed themselves.
Good character development and well paced story. Sets up the next one in the series well and did make me want to know more about the town and other characters. I can’t quite pinpoint why this story did not rate higher with me other than saying it was just too nice, too easy, and I guess that just made me bored.

The bribe does not work for me. It just jumble of mess. The stalker plot is just plain boring and unoriginal. I am surprise to find that a wold class writer such as Miss Perry conjures this story.

Sorry I am harsh. But it is what it is. I was looking forward for this series actually. Now.. I do not know. Maybe put on hold for now.

Devney Perry has mastered the art of small town romances. If you were afraid that some of that magic might be lost while writing under Willa Nash? Fear not – it’s all still here, and it was so good!

Loyal readers will be tickled by some nods to Devney Perry’s previous books. New readers will have no problem settling into this new series. These characters are 100% lovable, their story is relatively angst free, and there’s just enough suspense to keep things snappy. I thought I had figured out how this was going to twist on me in the end, but nothing played out exactly how I thought it might. I was a little bit on the edge of my seat, and a whole lot in love!

I adored Duke and Lucy. These are two good characters. They were sweet and earnest and there was no unnecessary drama between the two of them. I loved how they communicated. I loved how direct they were with each other. I adored Duke’s protective streak and Lucy’s genuine affection for Duke and the town that came with him. The romance itself was pretty straightforward. The conflict came from external forces and it injected just enough excitement to keep things interesting. It was perfectly balanced, smartly written, and I can’t wait to return to Calamity!

The set-up for the series is stellar. I’m already dying for the next book – my curiosity piqued and my heart ready to go all-in. This was such a treat for my heart, and I’m so excited for more! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars

If you’re worried about major differences between Devney Perry’s two pen names, don’t because all the goodness and heart and great characters is right there along for the ride under her new Willa Nash pen name.

And, as you know, the woman is the queen of writing small town romance—and The Bribe is no exception. Plus it has the added bonus of being a romantic suspense!

I really liked Duke and Lucy right from the start. Their immediate spark and connection were fun to watch grow and develop. I loved how they were relatively honest and true with each other from the start—well, once Lucy was finally convinced her real identity would be safe in Duke’s hands. I really liked how they respected each other, that they loved hard and protected each other even harder. Especially once the truth was finally revealed.

I enjoyed the pace of The Bribe so much too. How it introduced the rest of the characters in Calamity and how their small town was just what Lucy needed in her life to help her find her balance and her “real” self again. I am anxious to read the next book in the series—especially after the big announcement in the epilogue. Oh my, we’re going to be in for a wild, fun ride! ~ Missy, 4 stars

😍😍😍

I loved this book, but that quote above stole my heart. It was Duke's from then on. Swoon!

This was a quick, small town, insta love read. It had lust, love, friends, a stalker, bison lol, a hot sheriff and a superstar country singer. I mean, what more could you want!

Duke Evans stumbles upon a woman and her friend on a hiking trail being roadblocked by bison. He helps guide them to safety and their car. He has heart eyes for this girl already. She introduces herself as Jade Morgan. With being in law enforcement he can sense she isn't being forthcoming with him.

They have another encounter, but this time it involves a speeding car. He can't believe who he pulled over! It's the cute bison girl! Except now her name is different. He knows she is not who she says she is...

She IS running from something and he has made it his mission to find out what that is. By doing so they fall far each other even more. They have such a sweet and adorable relationship.
Her secrets are unraveled and he swears to protect. That he does! He protects her heart, body and soul.

Loved me some DUKE!

5 Duke and Lucy Stars.

(Devney Perry writing as Willa Nash)

I loved this book - the characters , the story , the romance, the passion, the setting....all of it. I needed a book where the Hero was all about the heroine. I needed to escape from 2020 so I opened my kindle , started this book and took off to Calamity , Montana.

Duke Evans (33) is the Sheriff of Calamity but his first meeting with Lucy (28) is as her rescuer when her and her friend Everly encounter a rather grumpy bison whilst on their hike. Lucy is about to part ways with her friend to start a new life , leaving her successful and glamorous career in Nashville behind. She has reasons for dropping off of the music scene and she tries to maintain her new identity and keep under the radar but her reasons for leaving are never too far away.

Duke is a gorgeous Hero. He is loyal, sexy , protective and he falls hard for our heroine. He has a history of his own but he is all about Lucy. No mind games, no OW drama, no messing around. These two are so into each other and once they unleash all that hot , smouldering passion you will require the odd Kindle freezer moment. It's utterly delicious.

“Wish I didn’t have to work today.”
“What would we do if you had the day off?”
“Fuck in every room of the house.”
My breath hitched and an ache twisted in my lower belly. “Call in sick.”

There is so much feeling between Duke and Lucy. They have an instant connection but it is a little while until they actually act on their attraction fully. Each of them have some hesitancy , which is understandable from both sides but watching them fall for each other made for the perfect contemporary romance.

“Then why are you with me, Sheriff?”
She held her breath, the world around us disappearing as those green eyes searched mine. “Because when you’re in the room, I can’t seem to focus on another person. Because you consume my thoughts, day and night. Because your smile makes my whole damn day.”

THIS! This is what I need from my Heroes - that absolute , soul deep love for the heroine. This makes my kindle heart so happy. And let's face it, we could all use a little happy right now.

There are great secondary characters , humour , drama , passion, heartstring tugging moments and the promise of much more to come from Calamity.

If you want angst, couple separation and OW/ OM drama then save this book for another time. If you want to escape to somewhere and meet the residents of a small Montana Town and fall in love with an awesome book couple, then read this book.

HEA? Yes
Cheating? No
I kissed her like I’d kiss her every day. Like I’d love her every day. With everything I had.

Re read May 2023 via audible. Excellent narration by Jason Clarke and Ava Erickson. Listening time 7hr 59m.
I fell in love with Sheriff Duke Evans all over again.

This was by no means a bad book, it just didn't have that special something that I've found the other books of this author's I've read had. I loved the premise of this, the small town setting, and all the pining, but I just never was fully immersed. I didn't really care for Travis, and I found the pacing to be both too rushed and too slow. But despite all that, I still enjoyed this. Devney Perry has a certain charm in the simplicity of her stories. They are perfect for escapist readers.

🌟Brief Summary:
4.5 stars
Awwww Duke 😍😘❤️ where do I find me my own Sheriff Duke!? Cause he is soooooo swoooon.
I LOVED THIS SWEET SMALL TOWN ROMANCE💕

Lucy Ross is a famous country music star. Lucy/Jade is on the run hiding from traumatic events that caused her to leave her bestie and her career behind. She runs away to a small town Calamity and is trying to hide using the name Jade Morgan.

HOTTIE Sheriff Duke is the protector of his town so when he pulls over the beautiful Jade Morgan, the girl he met hiking just days before, the girl he was instantly drawn to he is shocked to find out she is actually Lucy Ross the famous country music star.
He’s a bit salty but also curious. He wants to know why she’s there and hiding from her life.

Lucy tries to bribe the sheriff into keeping her secret so she can stay hidden. Now he really has to know what has her running from her life.

As he tries to get her to open up sparks fly and these two grow closer and closer. But will Lucy stay in town once she is out of danger? Will Lucy really embrace small town life with this hot protective sheriff that is quickly winning her heart?

❣️Things I Liked/Loved❣️
❤️ I just LOVED THIS! The romance is so good and sweet and everything you want a romance to be. I really got my love feels filled up on this one.

💕I loved that they communicate once they were in a relationship. The whole will she stay won’t she stay was cleared up quick and I LOVED THAT.
That was one of my worries going into this. I hate when books use miscommunication or stupid reasons to keep angst in the relationship. We live in 2023 now and long distance relationships or traveling for work isn’t the same issue anymore so for me it’s a STUPID reason to drag out angst.
💕Here we get communication and two people that are willing to do whatever it takes to make it their relationship work. 💕

❤️💯🥳He’s no manwhores he doesn’t even keep condoms on him cause he doesn’t do ONS.

❤️‍🔥A man that’s cooks bare foot ❤️‍🔥

❤️‍🔥A man that helps his woman dye her hair! 😭❤️‍🔥 ….🙋🏼‍♀️ I’ll take one of those.

❤️I loved the connection between these two and the passion they shared for each other, I got all the giddy feels.

❤️I love that the readers are shown how the h is so much MORE and DIFFERENT from his ex. I NEED THIS especially when the ex is still lurking around or were serious in the past. I loved that he never loved his ex!
He only ever loved Lucy ❤️

💕How he is basically helping to raise a teen that isn’t even his biological son. He only dated his ex for 2 years but loved her son so he stayed on the kids life and is father figure.

💯This is a small town romance with feels and side characters. It’s definitely relationship driven and not story driven. This was just what I was needing. But be prepared that the plot is not the main focus and if you want a story w lots going on this isn’t for you.

Things I Did 💔 Not Like
‼️I wanted to see the reactions of the town folk when they found out who Lucy really was.

‼️I was disappointed with the stalker. I wanted more angst with that and I wanted it to be someone else.

‼️I wanted to see her stardom more and I was a bit disappointed that she gave up performing in concerts. I like how everything else played out but I think she should still have kept some more of her stardom on her own terms. She could have still performed under a limited amount of locations. I would have loved to see Duke travel w her a bit and for him be in her world a bit more (even her new version of that) than just her in his.

❤️ Hero:
Sheriff Duke 33yrs old- Calamity’s town sheriff he is strong, protective and just plain AMAZING ❤️
He just some EVERYTHING SWOON WORTHY 💕

🦋 Heroine:
Jade/ Lucy 28yrs old country music star
She was sweet. I like that she wasn’t hardened by her celebrity life and the things that happened to her. A little weary? Yes but once she lets her guard down she s open and honest and very kindhearted. I liked her.

💭 POV:
First day person duel POV

🎧audio was 3.75 stars for me. I thought that the narrators were good but they could have given a bit more emotion at times when it was needed it felt very monotone.
💕The audio book has the extended bonus epilogue!!

🔥 Burn Rate:
Medium
Sex at 32%

😡/😍 Angst level:
Low

❤️‍🔥 Sexy times & Descriptive sex:
Yes we get a few good sexy times with lots of passion and chemistry ❤️‍🔥

🌓 Push/Pull:
Not really.
Maybe a tiny bit from both in the very beginning but once they are on the same page it’s full steam ahead

☠️ OW/OM Drama:
OWD minor- He dates his ex 4 yrs ago for 2 years. He stayed that long cause of her kids who he loved. He stayed a father figure in the kids life. His ex wants him back and is jelly. He doesn’t want her back.

🤮 OW/OM Sex / Fluid or DNA Exchange:
Nope

🤬 Cheating:
Nope

👰🏼‍♀️ Virgins:
Nope
She has dated but not a lot and she doesn’t sleep around.
He has his ex from 4 years ago and only dated a few girls since but nothing serious since. He’s no manwhores and doesn’t sleep around.

I finally dived into my first Devney Perry book, The Bribe. Leave it to me to begin with her first under a new pen name.
description

Anyhoo...

In the broad overview, DP/WN seamlessly created a captivating view into the small town of Calamity, MT & how its community is woven together with a good variety of personalities & connections. Add an element of suspense of our heroine being on the run, it was quite enjoyable & a very solid first read.

As for Duke & Lucy’s romance...
I liked it — I did. Both are well rounded & super likable, together & apart. Though a little unsteady from the losses she’s been through recently & from years before, Lucy is a sweet, fun & caring woman. Duke is protective, loving, & so solid — a truly a good, decent man —. The romance found its way when all was said & done though. Duke & Lucy ended up being very sweet & sexy together.

After only a fairly small tease, I’m already hooked & incredibly curious to read how it went down between Hux & Everly& what’s to come in The Bluff(book 2). February feels so far!
