Son of the Poison Rose marks the second installment of New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry's epic, swashbuckling Kagen the Damned series.

The Silver Empire is in ruins. War is in the wind. Kagen and his allies are on the run from the Witch-king. Wild magic is running rampant everywhere. Spies and secret cabals plot from the shadows of golden thrones.

Kagen Vale is the most wanted man in the world, with a death sentence on his head and a reward for him―dead or alive―that would tempt a saint.

The Witch-king has new allies who bring a terrible weapon―a cursed disease that drives people into a murderous rage. If the disease is allowed to spread, the whole of the West will tear itself apart.

In order to build an army of resistance fighters and unearth magical weapons of his own, Kagen and his friends have to survive attacks and storms at sea, brave the haunted wastelands of the snowy north, fight their way across the deadly Cathedral Mountains, and rediscover a lost city filled with cannibal warriors, old ghosts, and monsters from other worlds. Along with his reckless adventurer brothers, Kagen races against time to save more than the old empire… if he fails the world will be drenched in a tsunami of bloodshed and horror.

Son of the Poison Rose weaves politics and espionage, sorcery and swordplay, treachery and heroism as the damned outcast Kagen fights against the forces of ultimate darkness.

Epic Dark Fantasy Continuation!

Epic Dark Fantasy Continuation!
Son of the Poison Rose is the continuation in the Kagen the Damned series. Kagen Vale is the captain of the palace guard, and protector of the royal's children, his family. His world is ripped apart after the Silver Empire is overtaken by the Witch King of Hakkia. After the big reveal at the end of book #1, this novel begins with Kagen on the run. After months of self-loathing and grief, Kegan befriends Filia and Tuke. Together, they scheme up a plan to destroy the most evil person known throughout the kingdoms. More than an army, they will need magic on their side. The supporting cast characters, and multiple story lines help in the world-building.. Maberry truly immerses the reader in the experiences, the elements and milestones throughout the story culminating in an epic ending. This genre is definitely outside my reading preference, but I enjoyed this action packed dark fantasy. It's twists, turns and surprises kept me turning the page of this 704 page novel.Thank you St. Martins Press for the complimentary copy.

Picking up Kagen the Damned was a bit of luck for me. I was unfamiliar with Jonathan Maberry. But, 'ole Amazon kept suggesting I try his books. Having largely left fantasy in my rearview mirror; so, so much disappointment in GRRM, disinterested in Abercrombie's steam-punk, Salvatore being straight schlep, DeCastell doing YA, Staveley gone skiing, and Feist, wait, does Raymond Feist still write Fantasy?

Along comes Kagen, the Damned. Kagen, Son of the Poison Rose, in between, Kagen, "I Say Your Name in the Dark Nights." Refreshingly different. Straight brutal. His is a life turned upside down, inside out, thrown off a cliff, into deep waters, with big fish, and even bigger teeth.

I was over-joyed that my least favorite part of book 1 gets little "screen time" in book 2. sorry island of the love nuns, but that part of the story was pretty lame. instead book 2 is a road trip of all the horrors that have crawled out of the grave. and this little land of dead empresses, usurping witch kings in yellow is now fit to burst with some truly horrific supernatural elements.

I'm here for it.

When's book 3?

Until then, do yourself a favor, pick up Kagen the Damned if you haven't already, then immediately start Son of the Poison Rose.

In this second epic installment of Maberry’s KAGEN THE DAMNED series, Kagen is on a quest to find 7 ancient texts which may be the only way to prevent the Witch-king’s magic from reaching apocalyptic levels. He joins the Unbladed, a rogue group of mercenaries, who help him on his mission.

As our heroes get closer to their goal, they face savage tribal warriors, flesh-eating ghouls spawned by alchemical terrorism, one of the most grueling forests to ever exist, more Lovecraftian creatures, and a demonic warrior Kagen managed to kill in the first novel, although this time he must face another without the weapon that previously helped him. Several new characters are introduced, my favorite being The Prince of Games, a mysterious figure who forcefully becomes the Witch-king’s right hand man. Kagen’s close allies Tuke and Filia become as essential to the story as Kagen, and I can easily see them in their own spin-off stories.

For a book of nearly 700 pages, Maberry has the uncommon ability to make the pages fly by, once again blending dark fantasy, horror, and non-stop adventure into an incredibly satisfying series. There are plenty of side plots brewing, and I’m eagerly looking forward to what the author has in store.

First off: I love the character of Jacob Ravensmere! He is just fantastic! I was ok with Kagen in the first book but he has become a solid, fantastic character in this book. The Bloody Bastards journey into Vespia (basically if you combined Australia & the Amazon and populated it with the Reavers from Firefly. Fun place!) was a great just moving battle to close out a great sequence. I'm really looking forward to the third book and figuring out more of what is driving Herepath and The Prince of Games. Maberry can do no wrong.

This story has a lot to like, but the characters really shine, both the heroes and the villains are really well written and shine in this book. Plenty of action, dark magic and suspense. Can’t wait for the next book.

Spend the time and sit back to enjoy this amazing book.

This series feels like an homage to the old school Conan style fantasies without being weighed down by explicit racism and misogyny. As always, the author writes a rollicking good action novel. I've particularly enjoyed his obviously well-thought-out use of the Lovecraftian mythos. Here the Elder Gods and their like are presented as simply part of life. They're almost portrayed as super advanced spacemen who play at being gods. On not sure my review does it justice, so just read if you're into this sort of thing!

This second book about Kagen Vale has not disappointed and is as good as the first if not better. There is a strong narrative which helps to develop the characters and plot. I look forward to the next book and hope it arrives soon. Fantasy with a twist for Joe Ledger fans.

An absolute pleasure to read as all of Jonathan Maberrys books, sword and sorcery at its best and it would definitely be a mistake to miss this series.
