Daughter of Shadow Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 1,914 ratings

A sorceress with dark magic who's a threat to the kingdom.
Three powerful men from the royal courts sworn to protect her.
And a pet dragon with a secret.

The dragons are dead, the Ebon Queen has destroyed the elven realms, and the courts are at war. The queen's dark magic grows in strength, and the kingdom is losing the battle against her. Three men are sent from the Silvercrest Court stronghold to seek others to aid their cause.

Leander, an eminent and domineering High Lord.
Rohan, a fierce and seductive Knight of the Realm.
Galen, a deceptively gentle and passionate High Elf.

Their task: recruit the most potent magic users from the shire towns and train them to join the crusade against the Ebon Queen.

They never expected to find a daughter of shadow.

Calla's time working at the apothecary ends abruptly. On the day the town tests her magic skills, Calla's shadowmancy is revealed—a school of magic banned throughout the kingdom. A shocked Calla faces a death sentence, but a mysterious man smuggles her from town.

With no other choice, Calla must journey to the stronghold with the three strange men. As they fight their way through enemy territory, the men discover that Calla's power is more dangerous than they realised—and so is the bond this creates between them all.

Meanwhile, the Ebon Queen continues to ravage the human and elven lands as her shadow and decay move through the kingdom. And she's looking for Calla.

The fantasy character, world, and storyline development in this book was surprisingly excellent! Enough that I kept forgetting it was also a romance novel and being pleasantly surprised when the romance was juxtaposed and interspersed (I enjoy both fantasy and romance genres separately often). The level of development was appropriate for romance readers who may find something on a Tolkien or Sanderson level too detailed to slog through. The male characters all had distinct personalities that they continued to display rather than blending together. Some even had compelling backstories. It’s good for romance readers who feel investment in the characters makes the romance better rather than some romance novels that don’t develop characters at all and only focus on graphic scenes. I was also impressed that the author managed to make the multiple male live interests exciting rather than cringe-y by carefully authoring their interactions with each other and developing their personalities. Got for free on stuff your kindle day, one of the few that I liked well enough from stuff your kindle day that I couldn’t resist buying the next few books in the series.

Very detailed, you really get to know and learn about the main 4 characters and some of theor backgrounds. It's slow rolling but the 'acryion scenes ' are pretty cool and you can really picture what's going on. So far it kind of gives a B rated Lord of the rings feel...not a bad thing. Can't wait to start the 2nd book to really get into it

Okay, I really like this book. I like the plot and the characters and even the small worldbuild we get. The plot has pretty much everything I would want from this kind of books, it's intriguing and fun. The characters are lovely and I like their dynamic as well as their own character traits. I should have loved this book to bits.

Then why did I just give it 3 stars? Mostly because it's poorly edited. There are tons of inconsistencies, repetitive sentences and a few pretty large plotholes. The author clearly knows how to write and is good at it, but this way the book feels rushed and not worked through enough. I'm pretty sure all of these mistakes could have been avoided with a beta reader or editor and that makes it such a shame because I really liked this book. The story and character had me hooked.

Will I buy the rest of the series? I don't know. I want to know how it ends but since the book feel so rushed, I found myself proofreading it instead of just reading and that's not how I want to spend my reading time.

Again: A really good plot/story idea, love the pace and rhythm of the writing, and the characters are great. It simply needs more work to make me read more.

I greatly enjoyed this first book in the Daughter of Shadow series. Calla is a girl who hopes to gain a place in a school of magic, but her magic tends to go awry every time. Her potions explode and she knows if she fails the upcoming trials she will be stuck working at a local apothecary and fighting off the attentions of the mayor's son, ugh. When an elf and a Lightbringer show up at the shop she is interested in both of them. Elves have always fascinated her and Galen is a fine specimen. Rohan is a bit rougher and obviously a womanizer, but she is, after all, only looking.

When the mayor's son, Thomas, offers to walk her home she wants to say no, but she actually can't stop him from following her so she ignores him. At least she does until he attacks her. As she fights him off she is suddenly aware of a strange dark magic that manifests as a shadow attached to her. A really angry, evil shadow. What the??? Galen and Rohan observe what happens and know she is a Daughter of Shadow and should, by law, be immediately killed but they also see that she is scared and horrified at what happened.

I am not going to try to tell you the whole story as you will want to read it for yourself. Three hot guys (yeah, there's another one!), one powerful girl (well, she will be), and a little dragonkin who is her constant companion (until she needs him anyway). Her kind is feared and hated. She will need all of her strength and the help of all of the men to make it through what is to come.

Great story-its very interesting and help my attention the whole time! 4 stars because it's like end of the book cuts off and the story isn't completed. I know there's more books in the series but it just ends like there should be 200 more pages to this book.

Calla believes she is just a human with no powers when she shows she has shadow powers she is to be executed. She is saved by three men who she grows close to during her trip to he stronghold.

I had a hard time following this book for some reason and I read a ton of books.. The storyline was good although not too much history of the world was presented. Honestly the heroine occasionally was bold and sexually forward for the times but it seemed as though the author just threw in danger at the most random times (the beach) just so she can be saved by the men and maybe put into sexually charged situations (oops we are all wet time to undress and get skin to skin). This might work for some but I prefer books with a lot more depth and to advance with emotions and character development. Another thing that bothers me is when books like these fall in and out of modern jargon. For example one of the men would speak more medieval ‘she knows your measure..’ then speak suddenly as if he was a man in the 21st century. It was rather jarring and with the lack of world development I could never get a good idea of the type of world we were in and when. I won’t be reading on in this series..

A rather interesting collection of characters on an unexpected adventure. Discovering she holds shadow magic puts Calla in danger. Three mysterious strangers sweep her away from danger...but is she trading one danger for another? A lot of potential in this tale and this first book only hints at what is to come.
