In Search of Jane Austen: An Investigation of a Life (Sarah Kedron Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

After Jane Austen’s death at the tragically young age of forty-two, her brother Henry published a brief biography of her life which seemed to contradict the view of others who’d known her. Intrigued by the mystery of the conflicting stories, the Prince Regent’s librarian asks Regency playwright and amateur detective Sarah Kedron to uncover the truth about Jane. Sarah takes up the challenge and interviews family members, publishers, friends, in fact, everyone who could throw some light on matter.

This fascinating account of Jane’s life is based on a wide reading of works on Jane’s life and career as a Regency novelist. As the mystery unravels, the reader gains insights into the character of a most unusual woman who persisted in writing the books she wanted to write in spite of family and financial difficulties.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'A dashing actress and playwright is determined to solve the mystery atthe heart of Jane Austen's life and writing. Part detective story, partbiography, part social history, this is an intriguing and ingeniousnovel.' Jacqueline Kent author of The Making of Julia Gillard.

'In Search of Jane Austen: An Investigation of a Life by Ken Methold is a stellar example of the cozy mystery genre. Set in Regency England, it is replete with observations of the cultural, social, and political mores of the period, that are woven into this fictional version of Austen's life in such away that it almost reads like a well-written and thoroughly-researched biography. It is, however, fictional, though based on existing historical and biographical sources.
The author's pacing is flawless, flowing in an almost languid motion that is appropriate to the period in which it's set. The history is included incredible, and unobtrusive bites, naturally occurring in dialogue or actions rather than massive dumps of data, not once interrupting the flow of the story. This information is, in fact, essential to understanding events as they unfold.
I don't usually like inconclusive endings, but in this case, given the enigma that was the life of Jane Austen, the ending is totally appropriate.
This one is a must-read for the summer, and I give it a resounding five stars.'
Charles Ray, Awesome Indies Book Awards.

A fascinating tale focusing on Jane Austen a year after her death. I don’t agree with the author’s belief that the Countess might have been a strong influence on writing of Pride & Prejudice. However, I do think the Countess and the character of Lady Susan were co-joined twins. Also, I haven’t read that Jane’s mother was also staying at at Bigg-Withers when he proposed. I have always understood that only Cassandra was with her. I also think it is understood that Mary Lloyd Austen was anything but pro Jane. Here she comes off more like Martha Lloyd. I did think the author captured Fanny, Henry, Cassandra, Frank, and Ms. Sharp realistically. I have always felt Jane’s feelings for Cassandra were over the top and Cassandra was too controlling. As for Mrs. Austen, I think it must have been very difficult for Jane to grow up with a mother who didn’t understand her or favor her. Do I think Jane was prickly—- yes; but I also think her letters show her to have an amazingly humorous sense of the bizarreness of life and people. Great book.
