A History of Innovation

A lot of what makes Martin guitars special has to do with their construction. Martin was among the first major guitar makers in the US to adopt X-bracing. They took it one step further when they developed their scalloped X-bracing, which dramatically increases the resonance of their guitars. This, along with other decisions such as the dovetail neck joint, was extremely important at a time when guitarists had to rely on acoustic volume alone. Martin carried that emphasis on acoustics well into the age of sound reinforcement. So while you'll find countless acoustic guitars in Sweetwater's Guitar Gallery that feature the same standard tonewoods, a Martin is more likely to stand out because of its full sound, rich tone, and impressive projection.

While some of the details that make Martin guitars amazing are too subtle to accurately copy, others have been copied so many times that they've become industry standards. For instance, the first 14-fret 000 model was the result of an attempt to attract banjo players to the guitar during the Great Depression. Eventually, this modified body style became the Orchestra Model (OM), which has inspired generations of luthiers, including many of those who work in Sweetwater's Guitar Repair Shop. But the OM's fame is nothing compared with the battleship-inspired, super-loud dreadnought body, which has become the de facto standard for acoustic guitars today.

Family-owned Since 1833

One of the things about Martin that's endeared the company to Sweetwater is that they're still a relatively small, family operated business. That's allowed them to make decisions that other guitar companies may not make. When Christian Frederick Martin IV, the great-great-great-grandson of Christian Frederick Martin Sr., C. F. Martin & Company's founder, took over in the late '80s, he began exploring ways to bring the company's reputation for outstanding sound to truly affordable instruments.

Today, Martin makes incredible guitars from composite materials such as High Pressure Laminate (HPL), Stratabond, and Richlite. The result is a line of guitars that still lives up to Martin's standards, but that are all also highly resistant to changes in temperature and humidity. Not only are they popular with guitarists on limited budgets, but Sweetwater Sales Engineers have also turned many professional guitarists on to these instruments because they hold up to touring conditions heroically.

The Embodiment of Elegance and Simplicity

Finally, it would be impossible to discuss Martin guitars without mentioning how good they look. It general, Martin sticks to elegant simplicity. Even their most decorated production models, such as the D-45 and reissue models, confine their accents to the purfling, binding, and rosette. On the flip side, when Martin brought their custom shop masterpiece, the 1,000,000th guitar, to Sweetwater, we were in awe of its landscape of inlays, which displayed more than 40 precious stones, including diamonds and rubies. We were truly honored to receive two of the extremely limited run of guitars inspired by this singular instrument. Martin passed another milestone with the production of its 2,000,000th guitar, the D-200 Deluxe pictured here.

From humble to extravagant, classic to cutting edge, C. F. Martin & Company is one of the most inspiring forces the acoustic guitar world has ever seen. Sweetwater is proud to have such a close relationship with this remarkable company.
