This toy is... AWESOME! If I had money, I tell you what I'd do; I'd go down to Amazon and buy a Matchbox Mega Rig Shark Adventure or two! Seriously if I hit the lottery I'm gonna buy all my nieces, nephews, and children one of these. The educational aspects of this rig are palpable. My little two year old will be creating his custom shark stomper in no time. Here's the deal morons, sharks kill people and people kill sharks. The shark is to the marine ecosystem as the lion is to the savanna. Have you ever seen Wild Discovery? I will admit I think Sharks are cool in their own monstrous way (who has seen Shark Week and doesn't?), but I also think harpoons and a phalanx of expeditionary sea farers is pretty sweet as well. Now, baring that a mass of blood-thirsty, ravenous sharks gets past the island of floating trash in the open ocean and ends up in the wake of my research vessel, I'd gladly rotate my death harpoon port side and unload on the frenzied leviathans. I think Samuel L. Jackson said it best on "Deep Blue Sea" when he asked "So here's the riddle... What does an eight thousand pound mako shark with a brain the size of a flat head V8 engine and no natural predators think about?" I really hope some of you people can get a life and, someday, let kids be kids. This toy really is awesome and if they'd had it when I was a kid I would have wanted it too. In no way will my kids automatically work on shark research vessels when they grow up just because they play with them as children. Here is another way of putting it; if your theory is correct, than the garbage man (a nice man indeed) who comes by the house to collect refuse must have been playing with empty bottles and trash when he was a kid and thought to himself, "boy, Id really like to be a garbage man when I grow up." Talk to him next time and see if this is really the case. But if you really want to put your money where your mouth is, then I'd petition you to go and swim with the majestic, peaceful great whites off the coast of South Africa, cage free. In the meantime my son will use his imagination and innovative skills to create a sweet ass shark-harpooning vessel. I'll be waiting for your comments concerning your return trip from South Africa... (not holding my breath).
This is a great toy. If you have a child that loves the water and sea creatures, you can't really go wrong. It is an inventive product and it is not a "bores quickly" type of toy. Matchbox took some time to ensure plenty of building options for the boat. It can also be easily incorporated in a water table, pool or shower/tub play. As all parents know, any toy that can actually go in the water is a homerun in the mind of a child. Does the toy float perfectly? No. Look at it, it's totally top heavy. Did I buy it for its buoyancy and ability to float without assistance? No. I bought it because it's an awesome ship with an awesome shark and my kids think that's, well, awesome.
So, if you are looking for a plastic ship that is less likely to shipwreck than the Titanic, this is not for you. If you are looking for a well conceptualized TOY, this one is pretty nifty. I think it would be best suited for ages 3 to 7, but, I can see some interest beyond that due to the multiple ship building options.
The toy can be assembled as a large, tanker vessel hunting down a killer shark. Or, it can be disassembled into multiple boats, a small fleet that chases down the bad guys, freeing the poor hunted shark. The largest tanker has detachable wheels. The smaller elements, that can be separated into smaller craft, also have wheels. Whether this gets set up in the playroom, bathtub, or even the pool, it's great fun. Be careful of the smaller pieces though. It really isn't meant for kids under three or four. That's why we had initially packed it away and waited for our kid to get a bit older. But now? Wow. It lives by the pool. There is also a submarine toy that goes with this set, which is also a wonderful buy. Unfortunately, the sub has been discontinued. See my other reviews to read about it. I should mention that I returned to Amazon to buy this particular item again, for a friend's child at Christmas. It was a BIG hit!
