Vivi Vincent and her son are shopping in a popular Minneapolis mall when gunmen attack the shopping center, in what looks to be a terrorist threat. Vivi and her son get separated and her son is saved by an off-duty (and currently on leave) FBI agent, Jed Brennan. It is believed that Vivi's son, Michael may have overheard or seen some of the terrorist's conversations while he was separated from Vivi, only Vivi's son is currently mute. A manhunt of good guys and bad guys begin looking for Vivi and her son, and Jed, believing it is his responsibility to keep them safe, takes them to his family's hometown in the the middle of the Wisconsin wilderness.

I loved this book, I think it has just the right combination of suspense and romance. I was riveted from the beginning, especially with the gunmen in the mall, it's not hard imagine with all the shootings lately that something like this could happen. I found myself wondering what Vivi and other shoppers were going to do and how the gunmen were going to react to people who tried to be heroes. It was very intense beginning, and the suspense continued throughout the book. One thing I have always really enjoyed from Toni Anderson's books is the few spots where we get to hear the bad guys POV. In Cold Pursuit, we got to hear from multiple people who were part of the terrorist plot. It was interesting to read from their POV, because some of them weren't really part of the organization but got roped in to protect their families. It makes you realize how different thinks are in the US from countries like Syria where killing and fighting is part of everyday life, and some people just want to protect their family no matter what the cost.

The characters were great. I love how devoted Vivi was to Michael and how she eventually decided to take a leap of faith with Jed. Michael sounded so adorable, you could tell he loved his mom and was such a brilliant kid. Jed is amazing. I think he saw Michael for the clever kid he was from the beginning and was all around a great protector. Even Killion fascinated me, I couldn't tell until the end which side he was playing for, tricky little spook. All around great addition to the Cold Justice series!

There are already some very detailed and well written summaries posted, hence I won't bother anyone who happens to read these lines with another one (that could be even less well done!) . Just quickly the essentials: Vivi Vincent and her eight year old son are visiting a mall, when a terrorist group attacks the shopping center. Mother and son are separated but Jed Brennan, a FBI agent, who happened to be in the mall, saves a lot of people, including Vivi and Michael. Michael is a very important eye witness, because from his hide-out he could see the terrorists faces. However, the little boy hasn't spoken a word since he was four. His favorite way to communicate is by drawing but after the attack he's too traumatized to do so. The FBI arranges for mother and son to be taken to a safe house but before Michael recovers, the place is attacke. Jed decides to hide mother and son. But what about the untimely attraction he feels towards Vivi? BTW, the blurb is excellent and any further details would just spoil the story.

This was an interesting book with a story line that resembled and could compete with any political thriller. Political stances and religious believes that are well known due to current events were well elaborated and presented in such a way as to show that personal gain and not exclusively ideological orientation was the core motivation behind horrible deeds. This part of the book was well done and created a good background for an intreaguing read. In any case, this is a work of fiction and not a thesis, a fact that the reader should considered when referring to this part of the book.

Fate dealt both main characters a difficult life, which "handicapped" them both to enter a new relationship. Vivi, a fierce and protective mother, had a very bad relationship with her ex husband. Right from the beginning there were many hints regarding what might actually have happened to the couple, but these implications went on and on and only over 50 % into the book did the reader find out what actually happened. I definitely would have appreciated this information earlier in the story because this would have made more plausible some of Vivi's reactions and behavior. Jed was great. How he treated Michael was absolutely adorable. His behavior towards Vivi at the end of the book surprised me but finally he managed to save the good impression.

There was an interesting set of subcharacters who were shortly introduced, played a minor role but never really added anything substantial to the plot. For instance Intelligence Officer Killion, who made several appearance but then just disappeared. The same goes for Jed's brother and father and Vivi's ex. The epilogue completed the suspense part nicely, but definitely at the expense of the romance part, which wasn't refined enough. I would have appreciated a "smoother" exit for the subcharacters, maybe even an opportunity for Vivi and her ex to talk things over. I would definitely have liked to "see" what happened with Michael: what was the diagnosis for his speaking difficulties and how did he cope, move on. The ending of the book needed more time to "mature" into something gripping and rewarding.

In any case, a very good book that I can but recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of suspense, with twists & turns... ;)

Great book... I liked the twists & turns, it really pulled me in. All of the agencies are trying to help a mother & her son, & the problem is a lot bigger than any of them realize.

I found the political side to be a bit too far fetched for my liking, but it was well written. It was a good follow up to the first book, which was really a fantastic read.

When you have a political backstabbing, terrorists and romance, I think it is no easy feat to cram it all in a novel. I think it is well written for a kindle read because if the author wanted to dig deeper, this could easily be detailed over 3 books.

Mainly focused around Vivi and her son Michael, unfortunate events keep on happening and seem to snow ball that FBI agent Jed is thrown amongst it also. With their instant attraction it didn’t take long for them to give in to their desires.
