Unicorns Don't Cry: A Dark & Humorous Urban Fantasy (Valkyrie Bestiary Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 703 ratings

Critter wrangler rule #20: You can’t save them all.

Rage is boiling inside Kyra. Friends are dead, the world is burning, and her husband is…gone, his body and mind taken over by a demon. Death would have been kinder. But she can’t kill a demon, so Kyra must hunt down the creature wearing Mason’s face and do the unthinkable—trap him for all eternity in a bloodstone.

In between hunting expeditions, Kyra continues to rescue critters in need, including a unicorn whose rage matches her own after spending years as a frat house mascot, and the shar-lil, a creature of immense power whose destiny has yet to reveal itself.

Can Kyra stop a demon, save her growing family and still be an advocate for those creatures who have no voice of their own?

Unicorns Don’t Cry is Book 8 of the Valkyrie Bestiary, a dark and humorous Urban Fantasy series.

I love the Valkyrie Bestiary series they are all original, very creative a good mix of dark & humor. This one is more on the darker side and more emotionally draining to read. Jacoby was my favorite character this time especially his interactions with Shar. I won’t give spoilers but do have one caveat the use of the word eco-terrorist, I believe it is a poor choice to describe what was actually done and why. This is fiction yes but considering it’s current use in our world were violence & death result from ill thought out actions it could have been left out as you had already described scene clearly. Great book will need a glass of wine with my silly ferret and can’t wait till next book. Missed not getting more time with Kyra’s menagerie this time.

I had to sit on this one for a few days. This is a punch in the gut, and I was anticipating and dreading it! Kyra has to make the most of the disaster she's been given. She's lost her husband to a demon, and her choices are so few. She can kill him, or trap him forever in a bloodstone. Neither are things she wants to do, but the demon is threatening and hurting her family.

Kyra has to lose so much in this book. Her despair mimcs that of the unicorn she rescues at the start, that is being kept as a mascot in a frat house. Named Chug, because all they feed him is alcohol and drugs.

Not only can't she save Mason, she can't save the unicorn. Not without help. But the despair is so much, she loses sight of that. She also has another mission to save the baby sharlil from the goddess who wants to destroy her.

Wow, it's a lot for anyone.

Anyway, this is another brilliant book in the series. There is so much going on, and so many things that Kyra must do to protect everyone. It'd break someone weaker. The ending was perfect, but that doesn't mean everything is resolved. It's well worth reading, keep your hankies close!

You'll be satisfied at the end, and there are still darling sweet moments, and funny moments. I can't wait for the next! This is a world that's hard to leave once you've finished a book.

If you have gotten this far you know this series is excellent.

Excellent world building. Excellent writing craft. Excellent copy editing.

But you really need to start at the beginning of this series to get all the details and back story.

I don't give 5 stars to anything but Nebula/Hugo winners.

But this is Urban Fantasy as good as it gets.

Unicorns Don’t Cry made me laugh and tore tears out of me. But, it caused me great joy and hope at the end! I love the characters and their adventures and I can barely stand to wait for book 9. I highly recommend the entire series.

Kim Dougal is one of my very favorite authors. Her books are interesting exciting. And rather amazing. I love all of her characters and the crazy animals. I will be sorry for this series to end.

This book was heart wrenching, but struck a fine balance between joy and sorrow. Mason’s story was always going to be painful but when you added Shar and an apprentice with a heart full of love to the tight knit family Kyra has gathered around her, you prayed that love would win out. I’m not one for tear jerker stories, but somehow I feel Kyra’s story was right for this time. The tears promised in the title flowed. Waiting for the next story with baited breath.

A tale of coming to terms with grief... sort of... it is still a continuation of the Valkyrie Lyra's Pest Control, but it is also the recovery of the near Armageddon brought by the vampires. Kim McDougall turned the concept of an urban fantasy inside out to resolve everything left hanging from the last book.

It is well done. It was not what I expected and that is a good thing. This was something very new and yet gave all the characters a chance to mature and process surviving.

I look forward to what is to come.

The tears. Seriously, I have some serious emotions for this one. It’s been a while since the books made me cry this hard. I jumped straight into this one from the last one and was already full of emotion. I don’t think you can help it if you have a heart. I’ve come to absolutely adore these characters and this other has done a magical job of bringing them to life. I’m also completely thrilled that this is not the last book of the series. I think I’d be more devastated if this series ended. Kyra had so many choices to make that were so hard. She was in a bad place, and now there’s hope. All I can say is you’re missing out if you haven’t grabbed this series yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most dramatic book in the series yet

I just finished book 8 of the Valkyrie Bestiary by Kim McDougall - Unicorns Don’t Cry.

I was looking forward to the book through the summer and early fall until its release last week. The book was definitely worth the wait.

For anyone who has not read the other books in the series I would recommend reading them in order.

With this book Kyra Greene - exiled Valkyrie (and part dryad) pest controller is defending everything she loves from the demon who has possessed and controls her husband.

This series is set in a unique post apocalyptic world where magic and species from other dimensions co-exist with humans in enclaves such as Montreal. In this world the initial apocalypse was caused by the living spirit of the Earth - the god Terra who would no longer tolerate the expanding damage to the living world, and it’s life forms, by mankind’s technological society.

Honestly my favourite book out of the series! I was reading a book before this one that I couldn’t seem to get into and thought I might be going into a book slump but from the first chapter of this book Kyra and the gang had me enthralled. Dreading and at the same time highly anticipating the final book of the series. I wish the next book wasn’t going to be the last but I can’t wait to see how Kim completes the series. I loved all the creatures in this book especially little Shar & her mighty protector Jacoby. Highly recommend this series if you’re fond of found family, creatures of all shapes & sizes, romance & action filled adventures!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent instalment in the series

This one is dark. Kyra is the person who never loses hope & is always good at her heart, but as to be expected, the loss of Mason to a demon tests her to her core. The growth of the insanely cute shar-lil & the rather fraught rescue of a unicorn, along with the steady companionship of some of our favourite characters, help keep the book from becoming too dark, but only just. You still won’t be able to put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, tense, mesmerizing story

I couldn’t put down this addition to Kyra’s story…I sped through the pages that brought the demon inhabiting Mason’s body into Kyra’s sphere. The demon threatened all she loved and she knew only killing him…and Mason…would end this terror. The pain of living the rest of her life without Mason was overwhelming. Anger filled her days and infected all her relationships. What was she going to do? The stakes were rising everyday, complicated by the tiny shar-lil, coveted by the powerful and evil alike, for her world-building or world destroying magic.
I was engaged from the first page to the last and I can’t wait for the next instalment!
