About this item
- The Zhiyun Crane is the first handheld gimbal of its kind with an integrated CCI (Camera Control Interface) joystick. This allows you to manipulate the pitch, roll, or yaw of the gimbal manually at any time. At a later date, the camera's shutter and focus will also be able to be controlled by the buttons on gimbal's handle. 3 operational modes provide you the freedom to film footage however you'd like, while the tool-less mounting components save time and effort.
- 3-Axis 360° degree brushless motors offer you unlimited rotation. With advanced automotive-grade magnetic encoders attached to each motor, the gimbal can keep level within an unprecedented 0.02 degrees of ensuring a level horizon once a camera is properly balanced. Due to this, multiple shooting requirements are easily met, such as inverted shooting, and low-angle shots.
- The Zhiyun Crane also offers a built-in wireless control module which can be connected with Zhiyun's remote control (sold separately) or the Zhiyun smartphone app, which can be used to pan/tilt/roll the gimbal as well as update firmware and calibrate remotely. An innovative battery tray design supports 18650 batteries, with the option to also use 26650 batteries (not included), providing 6 hours or 12 hours of battery life respectively.
- Weighs only 950 grams, with a powerful maximum payload weight of 1200 grams for almost all mirrorless and DSLR cameras. With the 1/4" screw thread at the bottom of the gimbal handle, the Zhiyun Crane can be combined with multiple filming accessories, such as tripods or extension rods, offering much more versatility.
- The Zhiyun Crane is the first to achieve three 32-bit MCUs running in parallel at an incredible 4k hertz. Powerful MCUs (microcontroller units) combined with Zhiyun's efficient attitude control algorithms and advanced servo control algorithms allow the gimbal to sense, compute, and control the camera to a stunning 0.01-degree accuracy, all within 0.25 milliseconds.

Once you learn the concept of getting your camera balanced, it's pretty easy to set up. I do wish they had a better way of attaching the camera to the gimble. I'm not crazy about that single screw, but I'm no engineer, so I guess it's the best way they can come up with. Other than that, I'm a huge fan of this gimbal. Don't waste your money on something far more expensive. This model will do what you need done for most simple projects.
I've been reading every review I could for two other hot new gimbals, but the remarkable price and one high-profile review convinced me to order the Zhiyun Crane. Although it didn't list the Canon 70d as a compatible DSLR, seeing the 5d squeak by gave me hope that my lighter 70d and 35mm f/2 IS combo, which is under the 1200g rated capacity, would be fine—it is!
This device has a lot going for it, — solid build, 360° rotation, simple smartphone software—and maybe compared to other gimbals out right now it deserved 5-stars. I'm only rating it 4 because this is a fast improving technology and I can imagine some little improvements, such as an Arca Swiss quick-release system, a fast change battery cavity (rather than threaded) or a plate that keeps the camera from even the slightest twist, since the slightest shift of any weight can change the balance of the cam. Actually, the Zhiyun Crane came with a small "Y" shaped piece of metal that fastens to the front edge of the plate. This should keep the lens pointed firmly forward and reduce the chance of the entire camera pivoting on the ¼-20 screw. More testing to do.
I'm careful not to overtighten things, but I noticed one of the balance screws needs to be firmly tightened or the camera platform could shift if you set it down (I should probably use a 1/4-20 threaded stand anyway). Also, it would be great to be able to flip the 70d screen out for viewing high above or down low, or just getting a good view at all. I don't think the Crane gimbal has a large enough area to the right of the plate to balance the 70d with the screen out. I'm not too surprised. It's not small and weighs around 750 grams without lens. And as with other gimbals, one of the motor assemblies is usually blocking part of the rear screen.
The handle may seem long, but after a few minutes of use, I feel that the long handle could be a good thing. The rig is pretty heavy and not like shooting from a shoulder support. I'll be using both hands on that long handle most of the time.
Overall the Zhiyun Crane feels like a great purchase. I hope to follow up after more testing.
Also - I needed to order a couple extra thumbscrews (for my specific camera & gimbal setup) and received them promptly, in the mail. The customer service by the seller I purchased this from (Pergear) was fast & friendly.
All in all...the Zhiyun Crane is a great product, sold by an great company.
After the impact and damage the Zhiyun would no longer power on with the two fully charged sets of batteries and smelled of burnt electronics.
Contacting the seller looking to discuss reimbursement for the damage their defective product caused resulted in them passing the buck to their mainland China entity with no contact information and ignoring subsequent messages.
