Recumbent exercise bikes have long been terrific workout accessories, but they're usually somewhat bulky, making them inconvenient for people with small homes or apartments. Enter the Exerpeutic 400XL recumbent bike, which folds up for easy storage and fits inside a closet, corner, or other compact space. It's the easiest way to enjoy the benefits of a recumbent workout without dedicating an entire room to your exercise equipment.

Despite the space-saving design, the 400XL is plenty powerful, with a precision-balanced flywheel and a quiet V-belt double-drive transmission system. The bike also includes an eight-level magnetic tension control system so you can find the right resistance for your training goals. It's easy to monitor your workout progress via the easy-to-read LCD display, which tracks your distance, calories burned, time, speed, scan, and heart rate. Best of all for frequent exercisers, the 400XL's semi-recumbent design is inviting and comfortable, making it ideal for people who dislike upright-style bikes or who are recovering from injury. Add in a large seat cushion and backrest and you have a great bike for riders of any size and body type.

Other details include extendable leg stabilizers; a hand pulse sensor for reading your heart rate; a three-piece, high-torque crank system that provides a smooth, consistent pedaling motion; large pedals with safety straps; and transport wheels for mobility.

SUPERB Stationary Bike (see good info about batteries in this review)

SUPERB Stationary Bike (see good info about batteries in this review)
I give the Exerpeutic 400XL folding semi-recumbent stationary bike the highest possible rating because it is a great deal for a superior piece of high quality equipment. **BATTERIES** See later in this review for what isn’t understood and appears way too often in reviews about batteries for this product. Both included photos for this review are intended only to help buyers understand the possible battery issue (which is a non-issue) and a note about the foot straps on the pedals.Being a long-time “gym rat,” I have been used to super stable recumbent bikes and was expecting something a bit flimsy or not-so-solid. The 400XL is exceedingly stable, solid and flat-out perfect. The ability to shift its position so it can fold taller and take up less floor space when not in use - as well as moved using wheels - is brilliantly designed. The recumbent aspect is plenty enough for me, while at the gym I always enjoyed fully recumbent stationary bikes. To maximize the “recumbency” of the 400XL I did do an adjustment to the toe straps so my foot could be further forward. I increased the reach of the straps so my foot (and I’m not a wide-footed guy) could be positioned with the strap pretty much over the upper area of a shoe. I happened to have rubber very similar to the material from which the strap is made, and I was able to cut a looping piece to extend each strap, though some other method could do the same if you want more than just toe straps. Or if you wear clown shoes. (Photo 1 shows what I did, but the Paradigm company is so very responsive, it’s possible they’d even have longer versions of the adjustable straps that come with the bike.)**BATTERIES** If you get the 400XL and find that it goes through the two AA batteries fairly quickly - like in a couple weeks - that is a defect known by the company and once I observed this and contacted them (Paradigm), I had a replacement “computer” (the lightweight gray plastic disc with the LCD readout and so forth - they call that the “computer”) within just a couple days. (Most bikes shipped no doubt have perfectly fine "computers" that do not eat batteries. Just be aware of this in case yours happens to...)A properly functioning bike “computer” not only lasts for lots and lots of peddling on 2 AA batteries (have yet to exhaust a new pair of Lithium AAs), but also works just fine with recyclables. Two AA Lithium batteries are spec’d to supply 3V, but usually 3.5V to start, and some devices can’t get by with recyclable batteries that supply only 2.4V as spec’d, but usually 2.8V to start. (1.5V per one non-recyclable and 1.2V per one recyclable are the specs).I do use good quality recyclable AA batteries, and though they haven’t quite gotten down to 2.4V yet for the two of them after lots and lots of “exercycling,” the bike’s display cheerfully just keeps working. (The batteries are only for the display readout feature.)If you want to use the bike and not waste batteries while waiting for your replacement part (shipped free and with perfectly good company communication), removing the batteries between uses will save this battery burnout problem. I check my pulse sometimes, but since I’m usually only timing my “exerride,” I could totally get by without batteries. The readout does display lots of other stuff, which you can read about in the description…Extra Credit (photo 2, kind of a battery nerd thing) - The issue with the first “computer” disc that came with the bike (which the Paradigm company happily and promptly replaced) was something that sometimes is called “parasitic drain.” When the LED display goes out (something like 4 minutes after you stop peddling), the “draw” on the batteries should stop completely. My photo shows how even after the display goes out, the defective “computer” disc still had a “draw” of 2.5 milliamps or so. AGAIN: This is only for a defective “computer” disc part, and the company will send one that doesn’t have this constant (even when the bike isn’t being ridden) power “draw” problem. To summarize, this is an excellent exercise bike, especially for the price (I paid just a bit over $100 via Amazon) so there is no reason to fork out the amount of money one would have to spend to get the heavy monster exercise bikes they have at decent gyms. Stable, all the resistance choices you’d want, and all the basic info you’d ever need displayed on the screen readout. Unless you want video games, movies, or something like that in a bike’s display. (Disclaimer: My weight is right around 150 pounds, and I’ve not tested/tried other newish home exercise bikes. Affordable home exercise bikes from years ago that I did try way back then were cheap, flimsy and wobbly… The 400XL is absolutely the opposite of those!)
