It's clear that zinc oxide reduces the flexibility of paint, and less flexibility means a higher risk of cracking when stressed. This brittleness develops over time and is not usually obvious within the early months of a painting's life. It starts to become apparent thereafter when compared to non-zinc oxide pigments..
The problems with zinc oxide are unique to oil paints because it interacts with free fatty acids found in the drying oil to form metallic soaps. Because acrylics do not have fatty acids, this particular issue is avoided altogether..
I for one don't paint in acrylics so I must refrain from the use of zinc oxides in my oil paints altogether, if and when I choose a titanium white oil paint, I instinctively look for the pigment number PW6(titanium dioxide) and nothing else. Many modern branded oil paints(usually the cheaper or student grade) like to adulterate titanium white with zinc oxide and to the unknowing will be getting a poorer quality product because of it. However there are plenty brands out there(which I will not name, as this isn't the place to do so...) that choose to make a titanium white oil paint with solely just that, which is titanium dioxide.
Hopefully this information reaches you and helps educate those who wish to have their paintings stand the test of time; even if it doesn't make into a museum! 😉
