While travel for tourism in Cuba is still not available today, the violence in the book is the same gross violations of human rights as Hitler’s Germany, Vietnam war, POW’s in WWW1 and WWW2, Japanese prison camps, Iran and the Taliban. It is overwhelming to what lengths and barbarism man will use to control his power. It just keeps happening. Maybe one day we will again experience the beauty of Cuba and it’s people. Satisfying ending.

Really great hictorical-action-thriller fiction from a "new" author

WOW! I am really glad to add another author to my "must read" list of military, spy, techno-thriller genre. My only sincere regret is the fact that this author to close to my age, and not a 40-something with 30 years of writing ahead of him. Lee Jackson blends "fact and fiction" ("Based in part on actual events" on back cover) creating an incredible cold-war spy novel filled with lots of suspense and intrigue. Most other authors chose a "villain" from the former USSR - Jackson creates a tragic villain-turned hero from Cuba. And with Jackson himself being a West Point graduate, writing about a foreign cadet who also graduated from West Point, it is truly fascinating and makes me want to know who the REAL "Atcho" actually was. Kind of reminds me of the story of Mickey Marcus, who after graduating West Point around 1918 went on to help with the creation of Israel in 1947. I read this book in two days, because it was very hard to put down. Earlier in my military career, I met a physician who was born in Cuba, and fought in the failed Bay of Pigs event, and was also released after many years, and ended up practicing for many years in Puerto Rico before coming to the continental US. This author reminds me a lot of another veteran-turned author - MATT ROGERS - whose description of prison life are equally dismal. This book would definitely be a great ACTION movie.... but who to play Atcho? Full disclosure - I also graduated from West Point, but never knew cadet Stonewall Lee Jackson. Strong work, Jackson. Congratulations.

This book was really exciting. It tells the story of the Russian/Cuban/American happenings from the time of Castro's entrance in Cuba, all the way to the 1980's and beyond. Mostly, the book is about Atcho, a Cuban hero who endures incredible horrors for his young daughter and for his country. This book flies through 20-plus years and all the while gives interesting history about the Cuban men who tried to defend Cuba. It has twists and turns that no reader could ever anticipate. It provides interesting conjecture about sleeper cells in the United States. This is really a book worth reading. The Cold War comes to life on the pages of this book and it shows the perspective from the Cuban freedom fighters. Well done!

A grueling story of love loss and cruelty.
Thrown into the mix is the involvement of America - Bay of pigs and Russia -missile standown. All foisted upon a largely confused and innocent population paid buttons by their masters.
I would have preferred if the story told more about Fidel Castro and and his regime giving a more balanced view of events.
