I liked L. T. Ryan and Brian Shea’s Ratchel Hatch series so much that I decided to give each of these writers solo books a try. I was looking for another series and went for Shea first.

The title “Murder Board” comes from the detective’s use of colored index cards to organize open cases (Red) from closed cases (blue).

I am glad I chose “Murder Board: Boston Crime Thriller, Book 1” first because if I did not know in advance that this was a series, the cliffhanger ending to this first book would have been angry.

I began reading found this police procedural spellbinding. During that time I had eye surgery on one eye and then the other eye two weeks later. For much of that time my vision was too poor to read.

When I picked the book back up again I was surprised that the characters and storyline were strong enough that I did not have to start over again.

Shea knows how to make smooth transitions between times, events, and characters holding the readers interest during development of the tale.

This thriller is set in Boston and the author handles the disturbing criminal activities with class. The author does not use foul language or sexual explicit writing while dealing with the kidnapping of young girls forced into prostitution by characters from the dark underground mobsters.

The author does a great job bringing the readers emotions to the surface through events both likable and despicable characters.

Protagonist Boston Police Detective Mike Kelly is a flawed, yet believable character. His fiend and cheating e wife are together and the nature of Kelly’s job gets in the way of him keeping his promises and spending quality time with his young daughter. His brother is a drug addict and has some dark secret the only his sibling and mother know. He blames himself for the murder of his police partner from his patrol days.

Kelly transfers from his hostage negotiator position to homicide following an unsuccessful rescue of child rescue again blaming himself for the shocking aftermath.

Discovering the body of a murdered 13-year old buried in a sallow grave, Kelly follows the evidence and teams up with Kristin Barnes a sex crime detective after he connects the murder to another missing girl and a underground criminal sex trade.

I really liked the unexpected twists and turns in this fast-paced, suspense filled, and action-packed thriller and recommend it to family, friends, and others who enjoy this type of genre.

Enjoy!

Enjoyable read. Likable characters. Nicely paced storyline. The side characters of his family were two dimensional. Would have liked to see more development in their characters, but they did not add to the storyline, anyway. Would have liked to see the relationships in the crime family a little less two dimensional. The bad guys were bad. Got it. But I think they need to be more fully developed, also.

It was a book that was difficult to put down. It was a great read and the story was believable.

Suspenseful and the storyline seemed like something that could happen.

If you like the scaffolding of police procedure, you'll love this book. The character s never got fully developed: why did Kelly get divorced? How did Barnes end up in Sex Crimes? How did Kelly's ex come to be with their marriage counselor? And on and on. This is a straight up murder mystery that doesn't really satisfy. It sort if ends abruptly with the sequel available immediately for a fee. I didn't like it enough to buy the next installment. It truly feels like 2/3 of a book.

Example of factual error. "Officer Michael Kelly bent at the waist, bracing his hands on his knees as he vomited into the sewer gutter beneath him. Baxter Green was dead. His promise to keep the boy safe went unfulfilled." The author makes it appear that the boy is dead because of his signal, his failure as a negotiator. Completely wrong. The failure was the sniper's fault. There's no way an excellent sniper would have taken the shot after the little boy jumped in front of his dad. The scenario is that the sniper is slowly pressing the trigger while the dad is visible. But the sniper can easily let up in a fraction of a second. Kids can't jump that fast. I guess we call that literary license -- the stretch authors make when facts are more difficult than fiction.

Not only is Brian Shea the real deal behind the former beat cop turned SWAT turned detective in this modern detective suspense mystery, but Shea also writes with such skill and depth that I wasn’t the first reader highlighting passages throughout the book. Take the beautiful, soulful writing of Charles Todd’s Detective Ian Rutledge mysteries, add in the realism of real life forensic anthropologist and mystery/thriller author Kathy Reichs, then mix in the thoroughness and grit of Karin Slaughter’s Atlanta series (see “Coptown”) and Ian Rankin’s Edinburgh Inspector Rebus series — and you have the unique blend that makes Brian Shea’s debut mystery a gripping, enthralling read that you’ll want in hardcover on your bookshelf. Brian Shea is the less heralded co-author of the bestselling books by L.T. Ryan and Brian Shea, but a read of Brian Shea’s earlier works make clear that Brian Shea is the real deal & the real author. After devouring the “Rachel Hatch” series and reading both author’s bios, I traced my way here to “Murder Board.” Craft a calligraphy pen from an Exacto Knife and you just might find the tool Shea uses to write such seamless stories with profound resonance and realism. Peopled with richly developed characters at all the concentric rings of the multiple story arcs, I’m left feeling quite sure that I could get off the T at Government Center and brush shoulders with Detectives Kelly and Barnes. If you haven’t walked the streets of Boston for years as I once did, then do so now, alongside veteran police detective (former SWAT operator and beat cop) Brian Shea. I’d give more praise but I MUST run catch up with Detective Kelly in the next book!

Hey Brian,

What a read. Found this to be well put together. A cop with a heart, and the Irish liking for boxing\fights. Quite a fast paced book, keeping you guessing. But here's one for you to guess. Where am I going now ??

To download book 2, I have every hope that it's a good a read as the first,

Cheers Brian 👍
