Great alternative to joycons or the Split Pad Pro

Great alternative to joycons or the Split Pad Pro
Great feeling buttons and sticks. My L and R buttons are kinda mushy and feel slightly different to each other but beyond that all the buttons feel great. In particular, the face buttons are some of my favorites on any switch controller I've tried. The hall effect sticks are very smooth, and whether you like it or not, the yellow C stick nubby guy is here and it gives the controller a lot of character in my opinion. The grip on the back is also nicely shaped, smooth, and it's easy to reach the D-pad and right analog stick unlike on many handheld switch controllers.Since it's not relying on the switch's rails system, it makes the whole thing feel like one solid unit instead of having the controllers be a little wobbly on the each side of the switch tablet. This makes the whole package feel really premium. My main gripe with the controller is that it's just really heavy. For reference, the switch tablet is 297 grams. Each regular joycon is around 50 grams, making the switch with regular joycons attached 398 grams. The Hori Split Pad Pro controllers each weigh 80 grams, which means when attached, it's 457 grams. But this thing? 270 grams WITHOUT the switch, when it's plugged in the whole thing weighs a FAT 567 grams. That's too much for me when laying in bed holding it up to my face - so I did some surgery and removed the rumble motors. They're the same big ones that they put in regular controllers, and make a up a pretty good chunk of the weight of the Retroflag. They're not hard to remove if you've ever opened up controllers before, just be careful with the ribbon cables.Overall this thing is a steal for $50 and really brings nice feeling big buttons and sticks to the handheld format - notably better than the Hori Split Pad Pro - but I haven't tried the Split Pad Compact or the Nitro deck which are some of the other popular options.

Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2024
This controller is amazing. It made it almost more enjoyable to play in mobile mode rather than on the TV. The ergonomics is really good. The buttons has an amazing clickability.

Some customers have complained that it can scratch the sides of your Nintendo Switch, so I have removed the Switch really slow each time and therefor not experienced that.

Also note that most cases wont fit when you have this controller on, but I guess that is obvious. But you can still charge the Switch with the bottom port which is great.

I can fully recommend this product, based on the way it feels, the cute Gamecubey look and the much improved controls over the standard drifty joycons. Also fast shipping.

I have owned a Nintendo Switch since launch in 2017. Since then, I have tried every Joy-Con alternative out there, both licensed and unlicensed. This RetroFlag controller is by far the best alternative I have found to date! Prior to purchasing this, I was using the Nyxi Athena controllers, which unfortunately began to suffer from drift, as well as a sticking right trigger button.

This controller is a solid, single piece; not split controllers. This makes your Switch feel hefty and premium. Some may not like the added weight, but I personally love it.

Pros:

Excellent build quality (feels very “premium”).
Tactile buttons.
Grippy and responsive joysticks.
No input lag.
Hefty weight.
Rumble & motion controls.
Gamecube inspired.
Hall effect joysticks (no drifting!).

Cons:

Controller is not texturized, but rather smooth and slippery.
The ZR trigger does not feel as tactile as the LR trigger.
The L&R buttons have different sounding tactile clicks.
Cannot wake the Switch.
Portable only.

Overall, definitely worth a buy! I have used around 20 different controllers to date, and these are my favorite by a landslide.
