Shaky video footage being one of the most annoying things unless purposely done, it is the one thing I always try to avoid. Unfortunately my video editing skills don’t transfer to camera handling (in this case with my GoPro,cell phone, DSLR). The process of video stabilization with software is time consuming but most importantly it crops the video image in order to avoid digital video generated distortion. So a physical stabilizer is my way to go. You’d think the price of this stabilizer equals a bad quality product but you’d be wrong to asume that in this case.
I’ve tested this stabilizer walking, going up and downstairs, running and today I even tried it mountain biking (I don’t recommend it using one hand to control the bike). With every single test I got almost 100% steady video footage. I say almost because there might be some small movement I notice as a video editor but for any regular user those movements would pass unnoticed. So, here’s my pros and cons about the product as well as my conclussion.
Pros:
- Excellent price range.
- Absolutelu excellent customization. With the downloadable software you can fully customize the function of the gimbal, making movements faster or slower, as well as changing the movement direction of the joystick for those who prefer inverted movement.
- Battery last forever. After charging it for the first time, I still haven’t had the need to charge it again. Apparently the gimbal can also be used as a battery pack to recharge your phone. Bonus points for that.
- The software offers tracking. Meaning, when you use the software to take videos while having the gimbal on a steady surface (like on a tripod mount), you can select a person or moving object and the gimbal will track that object wherever it moves keeping the subject in frame.
- The bottom of the gimbal can be attached to any standard tripod.
Cons:
- The whole product is a little big. Now, I add this as a Con but it personally doesn’t bother me. But if you’re looking for discretion the size of this gimbal won’t help much.
- The GoPro adapter is not included UNLESS you contact the seller first. They are very helpful though.
- The GoPro adapter is NOT compatible with the Sessions models, even though in the questions/answers section of Amazon says it is.
My conclusion is, I really like and recommend this gimbal. In fact, I already got two of my friends to buy one and they are very happy with it.
I’m including a short video clip showing the end result when using this stabilizer while walking downstairs, running and while riding bicycle on an uneven surface.
