DPReview: Nikon Z 50mm F1.8 S Overview
DPReview
From the manufacturer
The Iconic Go-To Lens, Totally Reimagined.
50mm prime. An icon. Visionary perspective. Versatile focus depth. Capable of delivering striking, decisive images in nearly any light. Ideal for all manner of videos. The definition of a "go to" lens.
-
A 50mm f/1.8 Like No Other
Empowered by the Z system's larger mount, shorter flange distance, raw imaging power and video capabilities, the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S will redefine your notion of what a 50mm f/1.8 lens can do.
-
Unfathomable Sharpness
The sharpness achieved by this 50mm is staggering. Z Mount delivers even lighting from the center of the frame to the far edges. No need to stop it down—it's equally sharp at f/1.8 as it is at f/2.8.
-
Unwavering Autofocus
Powered by an ultra-quiet stepping motor and enhanced by the additional light gathered by the Z Mount, focusing is fast, silent and accurate. Great for stills; even better for video.
-
Aberration Free Zones
2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED), 2 Aspherical (AS) lens elements and Nano Crystal Coat virtually eliminate flare, ghosting, coma or aberrations, even at the far edges of the frame.
-
Next-Generation Z Design
The Front Line of an Imaging Revolution
Z lenses combine reliability and beauty with next-dimension optical performance.
-
Next-Generation Z Design
Durable & Lightweight
Extensively sealed against dust and moisture around all moving parts of the compact barrel.
-
Next-Generation Z Design
New Customizable Control Ring
Can be used for manual focus, aperture control (great for video recording) or exposure compensation.
-
Next-Generation Z Design
Dual Detect 5 Axis VR
Uses VR enabled Z cameras' superior in-camera image stabilization system for up to 5 stops of VR.
-
Iconic Views
This lens can do it all. Iconic portraits. Street scenes. Close-ups of food. Interviews. How-to videos and more. It's brilliant in low-light. Lightweight and portable. Ready for anything.
-
Beautiful Bokeh
A 9-blade rounded diaphragm and f/1.8 aperture combine with the larger mount and shorter flange distance to produce a stunning round bokeh—even at short focus distances.
-
Endless Video Potential
The 50mm perspective is great for interviews, tutorials, product demos and more. Smooth, quiet AF and aperture drives and an advanced design prevent "breathing" and wobbling.
-
Shines in Low Light
Draws peak performance from a Z camera's game-changing low light capabilities. Captures point-of-light sources like streetlights with uncanny sharpness and minimal spherical aberration.

1. Image quality: Strikingly beautiful due to Nikon's color science and exceptionally sharp edge-to-edge thanks to good distortion control, color aberration control, and vignette control. 50mm is a great focal length for street, portrait, landscape photography, and this lens is well-suited for most of the types without a doubt. For a f/1.8 aperture, the image quality is at par with some of the f/2.8 lenses out there. However, if it's bokeh (out of focus background and foreground) you're looking for, this Nikkor does well and not as good as some of the f/1.4 or f/1.2 lenses. That's just physics! Overall, the image quality is THE reason you should get this lens for your Z camera body, perhaps the very first lens to invest in. It will last decades!
2. Focus breathing: for those of you into videography, you're in for great cinematography in the form of virtually non-existent focus breathing. Remember how in movies and TV shows things that emerge into the scene from out of focus to in-focus? Lenses that focus-breathe tend to distort the subject coming into focus seeming like everything including the subject is coming closer as you focus in. Well, nothing like that happens with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8S. Subject and the background remain where they are with only the focus going in and out. It's just beautiful. I am not a videographer but I can imagine how well this lens will perform in such situations. In addition, the focus ring on this lens is made of metal and has a good throw, and is super smooth reminding me of my Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 SL II lens.
3. Camera-linked customization: Assuming you will use this lens of Z body (obviously!), the lens makes use of two of the most important features from my perspective - in body image body stabilization (5-axis IBIS) and the ability to customize the focus ring to do other things than manual focus. This is game-changing, to say the least. The lens doesn't have image stabilization (VR - vibration reduction) but impeccably uses Nikon Z's IBIS and it's super important to get steady vibration-free images. (Quick tip - even with IBIS, make sure to keep the shutter speed above 1/50th of the second to get really sharp images.) Secondly, the focus ring customization. You can make the focus ring change the aperture settings or change the shutter speed or (my current setting) change exposure compensation. It makes the process of making images so much more enjoyable and convenient.
In summary, two words aptly describe this lens: "worth it"
To me, it was a big decision to invest this amount of money for a lens but with all the compliments I get on my photos with this lens, I have no regrets on this investment! I hope this helps if you are not sure about a Z prime lens purchase.
Pro: Sharp. Fast focus. The best focal length (fight me).
Con: Not very nifty (large and heavy for a fifty). Nor cheap. I guess all that sharpness has to be paid for somehow.

Bright, sharp images with natural, well-defined colours, and micro-contrast that you often don't notice in other lenses. Sharpness right across the image corner to corner at wide-open. Bokeh is artistically dreamy and typically Nikon. There's little to no messing about with the images straight out of the camera in your Photo software either. So easy to work with...
You may pay less for other brands but you will ALWAYS find compromises in those when comparing to this lens, right? So why not get the "standard"?
The Z series lens ( my opinion ) seem to be that much sharper and very much lighter .
The quality is here and this produces tack sharp images .
Well the photographer has an input but you get my drift .
Hassle free delivery and actually cheaper on here !
