But life hasn't always been a bundle of laughs. Urzila talks candidly about her childhood with a great family, apart from her abusive dad, and about growing up in South Africa.

Story
At the school gate, when she accidentally kissed one new friend on the nose and called another a "beautiful man-horse", Rachael realized that small-town France could hardly be more different to Australia. The smell of cigarettes replaced the tang of bone-broth and sprouted sourdough, the neighbors sometimes came to blows and under no circumstances would anyone wear active wear in public. Muddling through in terrible French pushed Rachael's family to their limits. Some days, everybody cried and ate their feelings with croissants. But the town of Sommières embraced these ragtag Australians.

Publisher's Summary
488 Rules for Life is Kitty Flanagan's way of making the world a more pleasant place to live. Providing you with the antidote to every annoying little thing, these rules are not made to be broken.
488 Rules for Life is not a self-help book, because it's not you who needs help, it's other people. Whether they're walking and texting, asphyxiating you on public transport with their noxious perfume cloud, or leaving one useless square of toilet paper on the roll, a lot of people just don't know the rules.
But thanks to Kitty Flanagan's comprehensive guide to modern behaviour, our world will soon be a much better place. A place where people don't ruin the fruit salad by putting banana in it...where your co-workers respect your olfactory system and don't reheat their fish curry in the office microwave...where middle-aged men don't have ponytails... What started as a joke on Kitty Flanagan's popular segment on ABC TV's The Weekly is now a quintessential reference book with the power to change society. (Or, at least, make it a bit less irritating.)

Hilarious!
Genuinely a hilarious book! I think it's safe to say that these rules are quintessential for living a very satisfied life; some are very common sense, but some of these rules NEED to be said!

I just loved this read. I reckon it must be so much better listening to the rules as read by Kitty, than reading them on the page. just live her voice, turn of phrase and downright sensibility. 🤣🤣

Easy to listen to, funny book.
This book was easy to listen to and was funny. When you are listening, it can seem a bit laborious at times as it is essentially just a 'long list'. Saying that I did enjoy it and I thought some of the rules were really quite funny/ relatable.
