1. Plastic smell. Yes there was but there is a lot of plastic involved. Every device that gets hot gives off that smell the first cook. It was gone in about 5 hours cook time. It's nothing that gets near your food in the crock. If that bothers you then let it heat up hot water for the first 5 hours in the garage.
2. Overheating. Didn't happen. Low was low. My food was edible in 7 hours instead of 8 like my previous crockpots. Perhaps the insulation gives it a little edge in cook time. Pay attention to your settings.
I used crock pot liners for the first time. LOVE THEM!!! Wow talk about zero clean up.
I pulled the whole bag out into a foil pan and the crock was spotless.
The liner was not stuck to the bottom of the crock either. I imagine if the temps were too hot, that would happen.
It will be handy to have the sealing lid when I take food to work.
The cord wrap is an awesome feature. I hate keeping cords corralled.
The controls are basic and easy to figure out. No instructions needed really. Pull out all of the packing and go!
Cool to the touch
1 sirloin roast (or chuck or rump)
4 potatoes peeled and cut in chunks (Yukon Gold hold their shape well in long cooking)
4 carrots peeled and cut in chunks
2 parsnips peeled and cut in chunks, opt
Garlic powder or minced garlic to taste, opt
1 pkg dry onion soup mix (can be homemade to avoid preservatives and msg/recipes online)
Put the veggies on the bottom. Put the (not frozen) beef on top. Sprinkle dry onion soup mix on top. Add freshly ground black pepper.
You can add in addition to this 1 jar pepperocini peppers and/or 1 pkg dry brown gravy mix and/or 1 pack dry ranch seasoning (recipes for homemade versions of this also online). Mushrooms could be added. Sweet peppers could be added. Mix it up depending on what you like.
1st of all, READ THE MANUAL.
I saw complaints prior about it running HOT. I can confirm this has plenty of heat even on LOW. But I also read the instructions that call for it being 3/4's full when used, so this is always how I've used it with good results. I will say tho that if your plan is fill it up, turn it on & go away for 12 hours, that you need to set the timer for much shorter duration's & ALWAYS cook on LOW. When the timer completes your pre-set, it then goes on warm until you turn it off. Never leave it on HIGH when you leave the house, it will likely boil away until all the liquid is gone & burn.
I Highly recommend that if you do set it on high, only do so for a VERY short period & do NOT wait for it to boil & it WILL come to a boil. So always cook with it on low.
Other slow cookers I've had were often not hot enough, so I will not complain.
Should you need to cook something faster OR in smaller qty's, then go stovetop. They are named Crock pots = A.K.A Slow Cookers for a reason & Slow is where you need to have your mind set. And fill it up, stews/soups are better re-heated anyway. But be sure there is enough liquid because it releases plenty as it cooks down.
Additionally, the lid has locks which are really nice for road trips BUT it it CLEARLY stated in the manual - NOT TO BE LIFTED BY THE LOCKED LID HANDLE WHEN FULL, so be fore-warned.
Happy Crock'n!
