High degree of directivityThe MKH 416 is a directional studio microphone which is also especially suited to outdoor applications. Its high degree of directivity makes the MKH 416 a superb microphone for film and television, including outside broadcast applications. |
Low proximity effect for balanced soundThe frequency response intentionally has a slightly rising characteristic at high frequencies. The microphone has a low proximity effect and therefore provides a well balanced sound even when used close to the sound source. |
Increased operational reliabilityDue to its operating principle, the MKH 416 is relatively insensitive to wind and pop noise and can therefore often be used as a soloist and broadcast microphone. |

But this can be remedied with a little practice and is NOT an issue otherwise. I don't find need for a pop filter for vocals if you angle it slightly off center instead of aiming it directly to the lips from an open palm distance so as to not have the mic take the brunt of vocal breaths directly.
I channel it through an Avalon 737 SP strip and find absolutely no need to apply ANY tweaks on the digital processing end whatsoever.
Another thing worthy of note is that this is an excellent cam mic with quite a range to it. While initially setting it up using headphones to get the proper setting on my mic pre, I had inadvertently positioned it out an open window and was shocked to be able to clearly hear what my next door neighbors were saying from about 30+ yards away!
Not that I recommend using it for such purposes but that range impressed the heck out of me just the same. Well maybe a handy feature to consider at pool parties and other gatherings--just saying.
This is a great mic well worth the price from a solid company well known for high quality audio gear.
I've read discussions on forums from audio engineers saying they can achieve the same sound quality with lesser priced mics by adding digital tweaks but that is like saying the imitation butter is just as tasty as the real thing--not so by a long shot.
I just received this mic a few days and just finished testing it. I use a shotgun mic for recording Coach Bronner episodes. The 416 is a great mic BUT {and the important info in most situations always comes after the BUT}, I have an Audio Technica AT8035 which is the original mic that I've been using and when I A/B'd them both, I couldn't tell the difference!
The 416 seemed to be a little more bassy but the 8035 seemed to be clearer with the slightly less bass. They were really so close that you can barely tell the difference and even if you can tell a difference it's hard to prefer one over the other. The big issue is the AT 8035 is $270 and the 416 is $1,000.00. You can buy almost four 8035's for the price of one 416 and I just cannot tell the difference. They both look the same and are the same dimensions and housing design. I am returning the 416 and buying another 8035.
Maybe there are some other advantages to the 416 that I just couldn't hear or that my environment did not test for. Perhaps the 416 has better off axis noise rejection but if you are recording in a studio setting (I am) and want a shotgun mic to record the subject a few feet away, the 8035 is great and virtually indistinguishable from the MKH416.
I have attached the video test file of both the Sennheiser and Audio Technica mics. The first test is the expensive $1,000.00 Sennheiser MKH416-P48U3. The second mic tested is the Audio Technica AT-8035 currently priced at $269.00. I called it the original mic because I couldn't remember the model number (or brand either for that matter) as I was making the video. i really was only testing it for myself and hadn't thought of posting it on Amazon. I am approximately two feet away from the mics. You be the judge.
I really found this microphone standout against all other alternatives, why?
simply in average home studio the amount of isolation/ acoustic treatment is not the best
and this microphone can give you good results even if you don't have good treated environment
compared to SM7b or other dynamic microphones this mic is condenser, low selfnoise ( if there is ) , not gain-hungry mic so you don't need to buy extra tools to enhance your microphone gain,,
and about the quality simply I can say: I've been in many projects and it pays its cost multiple and multiple times
pos:
- supercardioid : low noise/ echo even in not acousticly treated environment.
- ability to record indoor/outdoor.
- bright not like most of known dynamic microphones.
- for video recording you can put the microphone out of frame
- small in size : you can read from screen or paper easily or even if you record a video with the microphone in the frame it will not block you face completely like some other microphones.
- it came with pop-shield and carrying hard bag which is good for protecting the mic.
cons:
it is not really a negative point as the microphone is directional( supercardoid ) if you shift your face/ direction of your voice change it might go out of range especially if you're not close from the mic.
5 out of 5 after more than 1 year of use.
