Did not feel "dated" at all since the setting was announced in beginning and all the references fit the period. That is important to me, a retired academic and historian. Plan to read more!

I've read this book three times now and enjoyed it each go round. Yes, the female lead is rather unremarkable and yes, Michael Lanyard's "Redemption" is a bit too abrupt, but still he's a great character that cast a long shadow over popular fiction (books, movies, and radio) for many years to come. While Vance's prose can be a bit wordy at times, his seeming first hand knowledge of Paris is terrific and then the novel concludes with what must be one of the very first airplane battles in fiction. Recommended reading.

Stilted language and several improbable circumstances compiled into an old time mystery. Remind.dead me of a dreamlike from the 1930's.

I enjoyed this book. Enough characters to keep you interested, but still be able to keep track of them.

This was offered as a free book other wise I might have passed it by. As I got into it I became fascinated by the author s use of idiom and word choice, many of which have passed from modern vernacular. Although several plot devices seemed more than a bit of a stretch, it was still an interesting read. I haven't made up my mind to read any further works in the same series but I might at a later date if the cost is reasonable

This is a dated detective / thriller written about a century ago. Best to compare it to movies based upon alternative history comics set in a pre-Great War Europe. Historically interesting because it shows much about the development of mysteries and thrillers.

book captivated me.

It is an interesting story of Paris in the early 1900's with a good plot and a surprising ending that you don't expect which doesn't expose itself until the very last pages, a good read to me and one I would not be sorry for my children to read.

Pretty naff really. There are bits that are really well written but then there are some not so great bits.
