A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court: Original Illustrations Paperback – June 19, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
A beautiful edition with the formatting and all 235 images from the original first edition published in 1889. The cover is a Henry Pitz painting taken from a later publication. Use Amazon's Lookinside feature to compare this edition with others. You'll be impressed by the differences. Don't be fooled by other versions that have no illustrations or contain very small print. Reading our edition will make you feel that you are back in medieval England with the 'Boss'. If you like our book, be sure to leave a review!
A Connecticut engineer named Hank Morgan gets knocked on the head and is transported back in time to medieval England during King Arthur's reign. He is initially captured but uses his Yankee ingenuity to eventually become the boss of the realm. The book recounts his adventures and use of his 'modern' technology against the royalty, knights, and church of the day. He continually makes fun of the backwards nature of the citizens and rulers, and contrasts it to his democratic roots and ideals.

About the author
Mark Twain is the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910). He was born and brought up in the American state of Missouri and, because of his father's death, he left school to earn his living when he was only twelve. He was a great adventurer and travelled round America as a printer; prospected for gold and set off for South America to earn his fortune. He returned to become a steam-boat pilot on the Mississippi River, close to where he had grown up. The Civil War put an end to steam-boating and Clemens briefly joined the Confederate army - although the rest of his family were Unionists! He had already tried his hand at newspaper reporting and now became a successful journalist. He started to use the alias Mark Twain during the Civil War and it was under this pen name that he became a famous travel writer. He took the name from his steam-boat days - it was the river pilots' cry to let their men know that the water was two fathoms deep.
Mark Twain was always nostalgic about his childhood and in 1876 The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published, based on his own experiences. The book was soon recognised as a work of genius and eight years later the sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was published. The great writer Ernest Hemingway claimed that 'All modern literature stems from this one book.'
Mark Twain was soon famous all over the world. He made a fortune from writing and lost it on a typesetter he invented. He then made another fortune and lost it on a bad investment. He was an impulsive, hot-tempered man but was also quite sentimental and superstitious. He was born when Halley's Comet was passing the Earth and always believed he would die when it returned - this is exactly what happened.

Twain's work here probably represents a firm step into the Progressive Era bearing down on the fast-changing times he lived in. SeaWolf has done an admirable job in translating the many glorious illustrations, and even fixed a couple typeface issues they had with their first print run. The novel you see here is about as good as you will find compared to the original editions, and nowhere else are you going to get the quality of illustrations, which are varied and numerous throughout, along with the typeface and look similar to the original editions.
I think everybody needs to read a bit of Twain. He's not quite the linguistic genius of Dickens, but his prose has so much life and vibrancy, and the satiric classic here delves deep into some prominent issues that resonate well today even, that anybody is going to come away feeling a bit gifted for having partaken with literature of this order. It's simply fun to understand Twain's world through his voice, whether it be in fantasy novels like this one that work around time travel, war, chivalry, and various socioeconomic issues, or his vast trove of letters and non-fiction that present a wonderful view of this time period, you are going to learn something from reading it.
SeaWolf does Twain better than any other publisher has before it outside of some sterling hardcover editions, and I hope more people can find this press and enjoy the novels as I have. It's a big step up from what you might remember in high-school or college. The illustrations are absolutely fantastic, and I could never read Twain again without them. Highly recommended.
